Three Scottish museums ranked among best in the UK outside London

Daily Record09-05-2025
These standout museums earned their spot thanks to world-class collections, immersive exhibits and global appeal
Scotland is home to some of the UK's most fascinating museums, and three standout venues have earned recognition as some of the best museums outside of London. These sites are not only treasures of history and culture but also prime destinations for any visitor to Scotland.
Three Scottish museums have been recognised in the prestigious Blooloop Top 25 UK Museums Outside London list. These remarkable institutions have earned their place through their exceptional collections, engaging exhibits, and cultural significance, attracting visitors from across the world.

All three have benefited from multi-million pound regenerations in recent years, breathing new life into these excellent sites. Each museum has artefacts and exhibits that tell great stories of Scotland's past.

David Livingstone Birthplace
Opened after a £9.1mil regeneration in 2021, the David Livingstone Birthplace, located in Blantyre, South Lanarkshire, brings to life the story of the renowned Scottish explorer. This Grade A-Listed building was carefully refurbished to provide a modern interpretation of Livingstone's legacy.
The museum explores his remarkable achievements, like his self-education and commitment to becoming a doctor, while also confronting more difficult aspects of his explorations.
As museum director Grant Mackenzie explained: 'Livingstone was self-educated and walked eight miles into Glasgow at three or four in the morning each day.'
The museum now aims to explore the explorer's legacy within a broader world context, incorporating modern issues such as Black Lives Matter. It provides a balanced view of Livingstone's life, showing both his accomplishments and the more troubling aspects tied to colonialism.
Burrell Collection
Meanwhile, in Glasgow, the Burrell Collection showcases a stunning array of nearly 9,000 artefacts spanning over 6,000 years of history. After undergoing a major £68million refurbishment, it reopened in 2022, boasting an expanded and more accessible space.

The collection, which includes ancient Egyptian relics, Islamic art, medieval furniture, and Impressionist paintings by the likes of Degas and Cézanne, is housed in a sleek modernist building at Pollok Country Park.

The Burrell Collection was recognised as the Art Fund's 2023 Museum of the Year, cementing its place as one of the finest museums in the UK.
Its mission is not only to preserve Sir William Burrell's extensive collection but also to ensure its accessibility for future generations. As museum curators continue to enhance the visitor experience, the Burrell Collection stands as a testament to the rich diversity of global culture.
Perth Museum
Further north, the Perth Museum reopened in March 2024 after a significant £27million renovation. The renovation has breathed new life into the historic Edwardian building, transforming it into a major cultural hub.

Home to one of Scotland's most iconic historical artefacts, the Stone of Destiny, the museum holds great significance in both Scottish and UK history.

This stone has been used for centuries in the coronation of British monarchs, and its return to Perthshire after over 700 years adds an important chapter to the museum's collection.

In addition to the Stone of Destiny, the Perth Museum features remarkable exhibits like a 3,000-year-old boat made from a single tree and a banner from the early women's suffrage movement in Scotland.
The museum promises a dynamic cultural offering, with temporary exhibitions and educational programmes in addition to its permanent displays.
As the city's architecture firm Mecanoo has enhanced this once-political and social gathering space, the museum has become a must-visit destination for history and culture enthusiasts.

British Grammy winner reveals teenage drug battle left her with speech problems and a driving ban

Clean Bandit released their new single Believe last month. Now, Grace Chatto, 39, the band's cellist and vocalist, has opened up about the emotional story behind the track, revealing her teenage battle with drugs that left her with speech difficulties and a driving ban. In a recent TikTok post, she shared: 'I speak so slowly because I took too many drugs when I was a teenager.' She also detailed other struggles she faces today, adding: 'I can't get car insurance because I had a driving ban.' Despite these challenges, the musician, whose band has topped charts with hits like Rather Be, Rockabye, and Symphony, said their latest single is poignant because it reminds her to count her blessings every morning. Alongside the caption 'I believe in us,' referencing the track featuring South African singer Lloyiso, she wrote: 'But I believe in us. Won a Grammy, gratitude for all that I have, I am strong, I'm nice, I am honest.' Her candid post resonated with fans, racking up more than 180,000 likes. It comes after the chart-topping British group were the victims of a shocking robbery in Ibiza last year - with £35,000 worth of equipment and cash stolen. The band had flown out to the Spanish party Island to record the music video for their single Cry Baby with DJ David Guetta. However, the exciting work trip quickly turned into a disaster when they returned from dinner to discover that someone had 'crowbarred the window and taken the lenses and laptops and cash'. Opening up about the ordeal in an interview with The Sun, band member Grace explained that they were filming footage for the video with David in the studio, before crashing at a friend's house for the night. The other two members of the group, Jack and Luke Patterson, had flown back to London to edit the video - but when Grace headed back to their hotel to grab the lenses, she realised what had happened. But, despite being 'scared' to sleep at their hotel following the robbery, the musician was partially relieved. She added: 'The main thing was that the footage was safe, because that would have been irreplaceable.' The band had flown out to the Spanish party Island to record the music video for their single Cry Baby with DJ David Guetta (pictured in June 2024) Meanwhile, the group hoped to get the stolen £35,000 back on insurance. They are planning to make a comeback to the music scene and drop their first album in six years in 2025, after struggling to 'get their momentum back' following the Covid-19 pandemic. During their career, the group have scored ten top ten singles, with their first being Rather Be featuring Jess Glynne, 35. The song topped charts worldwide and won a Grammy, paving the way for further success with hits like Rockabye and Symphony, and establishing them as a standout act in the music scene. Clean Bandit is expected to release their new album, CB3, in 2025. While a specific date is not yet available, their recent single, Believe featuring Lloyiso, was released on July 4th, suggesting the album is likely to follow later in the year.

David Byrne and Hayley Williams write original songs for Netflix film The Twits

The film adaptation based on the characters from Roald Dahl's book of the same name will feature three original songs – We're Not Like Ev'ryone Else, Lullaby, and The Problem Is You – written and produced by Byrne, 73, and performed by the cast. Williams, 36, known for Paramore's hits including Still Into You and Ain't It Fun, joins the Psycho Killer singer for the end title song, Open The Door, as a co-writer and performer. Byrne said: 'This was a fun project. Like other Roald Dahl books, this one has its share of dreadful characters – this time two of them are front and centre. 'Kids (and adults) love that they can vicariously imagine their own worst impulses played out, harmlessly, in a punky fun story. So when I was approached to write some songs for this movie I immediately said 'let me give it a try and see if you like what I come up with'.' The film re-imagines Dahl's characters Jim and Credenza Twit – the meanest, smelliest, nastiest people in the world who own and operate a disgusting and dangerous amusement park, Twitlandia. As they rise to power in their town, two brave children and a family of magical Muggle-Wumps are forced to become as tricky as the Twits in order to save their city. Williams added: 'Being a part of this movie is like one pinch-me moment after another. My favourite Roald Dahl book growing up was The Twits. 'It feels like a cautionary tale – and also a really lovely depiction of chosen family and community, which is one of my favourite topics. I owe David Byrne for pulling me into the music for this. It was so fun and so surreal starting a song from scratch with him.' The film stars comedian Johnny Vegas and US actress Margo Martindale, who voice the eponymous Mr & Mrs Twits. Game Of Thrones star Emilia Clarke will also lend her voice to portray Pippa, while Hollywood actress Natalie Portman will portray Mary Muggle Wump. Other previously announced cast members include Freakier Friday actress Maitreyi Ramakrishnan, Primos' Ryan Lopez, Nobody Wants This actor Timothy Simons and comedian Jason Mantzoukas. The film is written and directed by american filmmaker Phil Johnston, who is best known for co-writing Ralph Breaks The Internet and Zootopia. Johnston said: 'I still can't quite believe that I spent the last few years collaborating with David Byrne, a musical hero of mine since I was 13. 'From the first demo he sent me, on which the featured instrument was a 100-year-old banjolele, I knew I was going to love the songs he wrote. 'Throughout the process, my collaboration with David has been incredibly fun and surprisingly easy, probably because I've been stealing from him for so long. 'When David and I started talking about an end credit song, the first potential collaborator David brought up was Hayley Williams. 'I still can't quite believe that two of my favourite songwriters wrote a song together for The Twits. The saying 'never meet your heroes' simply does not apply here. I met two of them, and boy howdy, it's been a dream come true.' The Twits will debut on Netflix on October 17.
