West Central Railway introduces optical fibre-enabled signal control technology at Nishatpura yard

Business Mayor11-05-2025
Bhopal: In a significant move towards modernity and safety, West Central Railway's Bhopal division has introduced a state-of-the-art signal control technology based entirely on optical fibre operation at its Nishatpura yard, replacing the traditional wiring system, officials said on Sunday. 'This first-of-its-kind cutting-edge technology will play a key role in making Indian Railways safer and more technologically advanced in the coming years,' WCR's Bhopal division's PRO Naval Agrawal told PTI. Senior Divisional Commercial Manager Saurabh Kataria said that this advanced technology has recently been commissioned on two signal posts at Nishatpura yard.
A phased roll-out has already begun on the Bhopal-Bina railway section. As per current plans, the entire section is expected to be upgraded with this new system by June 2026.
Agrawal said that until now, signal control systems used conventional multi-wire mechanisms, which were prone to delays and occasional malfunctions.
The newly introduced system uses optical fibre cables, ensuring faster, more secure, and highly reliable signal transmission compared to traditional methods, he added.
The core of this upgrade is the 'Lamp Output Module' (LOM)- a device that sends signal commands directly from the control room to the signal posts through optical fibre, he said. With this new method, signals along the railway track are controlled directly through fibre lines instead of conventional wiring, the PRO added. 'No bulky wiring is required as all communication will happen through fibre optics, ensuring smooth and uninterrupted signal operations,' he said, adding that signals cannot go blank under the modern system.
Even if one component fails, the signal remains visible to trains. Additionally, trains will run more safely and punctually, Agrawal said.
The system includes an automatic cooling fan that activates when needed to prevent over-heating of equipment, he added.
In the event of the failure of a fibre line, a backup line takes over instantly, ensuring uninterrupted service, the railway officer explained.
This system makes maintenance easier and is cost-effective due to minimal hardware and streamlined setup.

India-US interim trade deal prospects dim ahead of tariff deadline, sources say

By Manoj Kumar NEW DELHI (Reuters) -The prospects of an interim trade deal between India and the United States before Washington's August 1 deadline have dimmed, as talks remain deadlocked over tariff cuts on key agricultural and dairy products, two Indian government sources said. U.S. President Donald Trump threatened a 26% tariff on Indian imports in April but paused implementation to allow for talks. That pause ends on August 1, though India has yet to receive a formal tariff letter, unlike over 20 other countries. India's trade delegation, led by chief negotiator Rajesh Agrawal, returned from Washington after a fifth round of talks without a breakthrough. "An interim deal before August 1 looks difficult, though virtual discussions are ongoing," one of the Indian government sources said, adding a U.S. delegation was expected to visit New Delhi soon to continue negotiations. Talks are stalled as New Delhi is refusing to open its politically-sensitive agriculture and dairy sectors, while Washington is resisting India's demand for relief from higher tariffs on steel, aluminium and autos. Officials are exploring if these issues can be deferred to a later stage, after an interim deal, the second Indian official said. Ajay Sahai, director general of the Federation of Indian Export Organisations, warned sectors like gems and jewellery could be hit hard if 26% tariffs are imposed. "However, this could be temporary, as both countries aim to sign the deal over time," he said. U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent told CNBC on Monday that the Trump administration was more concerned with the quality of trade agreements than their timing. Asked if the deadline could be extended for countries in talks, he said it was up to Trump. Indian officials remain hopeful of clinching a broader deal by September or October, in line with what was agreed by Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Trump in February. "Given that there have been five rounds of negotiations and another U.S. delegation is expected, we remain optimistic about finalising a trade pact," a third government source said. The sources requested anonymity as negotiations are not public. The Indian commerce ministry and the U.S. Trade Representative's Office did not immediately respond to emailed requests for comments. Nepal to host Power Summit 2025 in September

Kathmandu, Jul 15 (PTI) Nepal will host Power Summit 2025 in September here, said Ganesh Karki, president of Independent Power Producers' Association of Nepal (IPPAN) on Tuesday. The summit aims to support the implementation of Nepal's energy development roadmap, which targets generating an additional 25,000 megawatts of electricity within the next decade, Karki said, during the inaugural of the 23th annual general meeting of the body in Kathmandu. Nepal aims to generate a total of 28,500 MW of hydro-electricity by 2035. Currently Nepal is producing 3,500 MW of electricity. The event will bring together investors, government officials, experts, and stakeholders from over 30 countries to discuss policy debates, share successes stories and exchange views. Karki asked the government to provide tax exemption to new hydropower projects for the first 10 years of production, liberalise government policies to attract more investment and to reform government procedures relating to hydropower generation. Energy Minister Deepak Khadka asked the private sector to invest in transmission lines and assured that the government would encourage the private sector as well as foreign investors to invest in the hydropower sector of Nepal. Chief guest at the occasion, former prime minister and Nepali Congress chairman Sher Bahadur Deuba, advised the government to create an investment-friendly environment for both Nepalese as well as foreign investors.
