Why MDMK chief's son Durai Vaiko walked back resignation as principal secretary in 24 hours

The Print21-04-2025

A day before the meeting, Durai had resigned from the position of principal secretary, saying that he could not work in the presence of a person trying to 'destroy' the party.
Chennai: Marumalarchi Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (MDMK) principal secretary Durai Vaiko has withdrawn his resignation after the party's administrative committee meeting, where his father, general secretary Vaiko, mediated the reconciliation between him and the deputy general secretary Mallai Sathya.
'The tension between the supporters of Sathya and Durai had been simmering for long, and it came to the fore after an internal party meeting on 12 April, where Sathya's supporters trolled Durai and Durai's supporters demanded Sathya's removal,' a source said.
At the day-long administrative committee meeting headed by party chief Vaiko, all district secretaries of the party spoke in favour of Durai's leadership, with some even raising slogans against Sathya.
'But Vaiko did not want to give up on both of them. Although Durai had been demanding the removal of Sathya, Vaiko did not want to let him go as he stood with the party and its leadership in times of crisis,' a leader, who was present at the meeting, told ThePrint.
Vaiko made Durai and Sathya patch up, and even made them sit next to each other. At the end of the meeting, Vaiko made the two shake hands, signalling the resolution of their differences and commitment to work together for their party.
'When two hearts can join, won't the hands join?' Vaiko said, bringing their hands together.
After the meeting, Durai informed media persons about his decision to withdraw his resignation. 'There were some issues within the party and we had this meeting to discuss them. Our deputy general secretary (Sathya) has apologised for some of his actions that had caused disturbance within the party. He has assured us to work together and support me. Based on the assurance, I have withdrawn my resignation and will continue as principal secretary,' he said.
At the meeting, the party passed nine resolutions, including key announcements on protests to demand withdrawal of Waqf (Amendment) Act 2025 and removal of Tamil Nadu Governor R.N. Ravi.

52 villages adjoining LAC, LoC in Leh, Kargil districts declared reserved areas

Fifty-two villages along the Actual Line of Control (ALC) have been declared reserved by the administration of the Union Territory of Ladakh to enable residents of these identified areas to avail reservation benefits in recruitment and other sectors, a notification issued on Sunday said. The Ladakh administration has achieved yet another milestone with the issuance of an official notification declaring specific areas as adjoining the Actual Line of Control under the provisions of the Jammu and Kashmir Reservation Act, 2004, as amended by the Ladakh Reservation (Amendment) Regulation, 2025, an official spokesperson said. As per the notification, this includes 18 revenue villages in Leh district situated along the Line of Control (LoC) and Line of Actual Control (LAC), and 34 revenue villages in Kargil district situated along the LoC. This declaration will enable residents of these identified areas to avail reservation benefits as specified in the amended Ladakh Reservation Rules, it said. The declaration follows a structured process initiated by the administration through a one-member Commission under the chairmanship of Justice Bansi Lal Bhat, a former judge of the High Court of Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh. The Commission was tasked with identifying areas, villages and hamlets adjoining the ALC in Ladakh for reservation benefits under the Act, the spokesperson said. The Commission submitted its final report to the administration in December 2024. An internal committee constituted to examine the Commission's findings reviewed and recommended acceptance of the identified areas listed in the schedule to the report, he said. Based on these recommendations, the administration has officially accepted and declared the areas, villages and hamlets listed in the report as areas along the ALC for the purpose of reservation under the Act.

'Preamble Not Changeable': VP Dhankhar Says Words Added During Emergency A 'Festering Wound'

Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar referred to the Preamble as the "seed" from which a Constitution develops Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar on Saturday said the words inserted in the Preamble of the Constitution through an amendment during the Emergency era were a 'festering wound", backing the call by a top RSS leader for a review of the added terms 'secular' and 'socialist'. In the backdrop of the political controversy triggered by RSS general secretary Dattatreya Hosabale's call for a national discussion on retaining the words 'secular" and 'socialist" in the Preamble, Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar asserted that the Preamble is 'sacrosanct" and immutable, stressing that it cannot be changed. Dhankhar said the words inserted in the Preamble in 1976 during the period of Emergency, were a 'nasoor" (festering wound) and could cause upheaval. The changes signalled a betrayal of the 'wisdom" of the framers of the Constitution, he added. He further said the added words were a 'sacrilege to the spirit of Sanatan." 'It is nothing but belittling the civilizational wealth and knowledge of this country for thousands of years," the vice president said at a book launch event in Delhi. Vice President Dhankhar referred to the Preamble as the 'seed" from which a Constitution develops. He also noted that, unlike India, no other country has altered the text of its Constitution's Preamble. 'The Preamble of a Constitution is not changeable. But this Preamble was changed by the 42nd Constitution (Amendment) Act of 1976," he said, noting that the words 'socialist", 'secular", and 'integrity" were added. Dhankhar said it was a travesty of justice that something that cannot be changed was altered 'casually, farcically, and with no sense of propriety" and that too during the Emergency when several opposition leaders were in jail. 'And in the process, if you deeply reflect, we are giving wings to existential challenges. These words have been added as nasoor (festering wound). These words will create upheaval," Dhankhar warned. 'We must reflect," he said, adding that Dr BR Ambedkar did painstaking work on the Constitution, and he must have surely focused on it. Political Row The Congress and other opposition parties have strongly criticised the statement made on Thursday by the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh's (RSS) second senior-most leader, calling it 'political opportunism" and a 'deliberate assault" on the soul of the Constitution. The BJP hit back at the Congress by referencing comments made by then-prime minister Indira Gandhi, in which she questioned the usefulness of the Indian Constitution and expressed her intent to change it. BJP spokesperson Sambit Patra said the Congress should not divert from the Emergency-era excesses on people and tender an apology. As the country observed the 50th anniversary of the Emergency, it is imperative to discuss the sufferings the then government inflicted on people so that it is never repeated, he told reporters. He cited media reports of that period, which quoted Indira Gandhi from her press conference and address to convey her critical take on the Constitution. Delhi Assembly Speaker Vijender Gupta also questioned the inclusion of the words 'socialist' and 'secular' in the Preamble, saying such changes should be made through national consensus, not under the 'cover of authoritarianism." Former Union Cabinet Minister Satyanarayan Jatiya said the Preamble reflects the core values of the Constitution, and its sanctity must be preserved. 'No single leader can alter its structure based on personal ambition," he said, accusing the then government of acting in a manner similar to the colonial regime. Tejashwi escapes injury as drone crashes during rally

Patna: Leader of the opposition in state assembly, Tejashwi Prasad Yadav , narrowly avoided injury on Sunday when a drone crashed onto the stage during the 'Waqf Bachao-Dastoor Bachao' rally at Gandhi Maidan in Patna. The incident occurred while the former deputy chief minister was addressing the crowd. The drone came hurtling towards the podium, prompting Tejashwi to instinctively duck, escaping what could have been a serious mishap. Patna SP (central) Diksha told reporters that police were examining the incident. "We will investigate the matter," she said, adding that police personnel were occupied with crowd management during the rally. The organisers later clarified that the drone had been deployed for aerial coverage of the event. Tejashwi resumed his address shortly after the disruption. The rally, held under the banner of Imarat-e-Shariah, was convened by Ameer-e-Shariat Maulana Ahmad Wali Faisal Rahmani. Despite soaring summer temperatures, lakhs of people gathered to protest against the Waqf (Amendment) Act, 2025 and express support for the Constitution.
