Companies from Taiwan and Vietnam are keen to invest in India's
non-leather footwear sector
, and the government support is crucial to facilitate these investments,
Council for Leather Exports
(CLE) Chairman RK Jalan said on Sunday.
Jalan said these Taiwanese and Vietnamese firms import products like shoe soles, moulds, machinery, and fabrics from countries like China.
"Vietnamese and Taiwanese firms are keen to invest in India. We need to support them so that they can import these goods smoothly into the country for their manufacturing facilities," he said.

The country's exports are growing at a healthy rate, and the council is aiming for USD 7 billion worth of shipments in 2025-26, he added.
The exports stood at USD 5.75 billion in 2024-25. The US was the top destination for Indian exporters with shipments worth USD 957 million (about 20 per cent share). It was followed by the UK (11 per cent) and Germany.

"We are expecting about 18 per cent growth this year. Promotion of manufacturing in the country will help further boost exports and job creation," Jalan added.
He said that a trade pact with the US will help increase the share in the American market. At present, this labour-intensive sector attracts 18.5 per cent duty in the US.
The two countries are major players in the global footwear sector. Vietnam is a major global hub for manufacturing and exporting footwear, while Taiwan plays a key role in the design, development, and production of footwear for leading international brands.
He also urged the government to roll out the focused product scheme for the footwear and leather sectors announced in the Budget to enhance productivity, competitiveness and exports.
The scheme will support design capacity, component manufacturing, and machinery required for the production of non-leather quality footwear.

MD Yadvendra Singh Sachan said Taiwanese companies have already invested in firms in Tamil Nadu.
"They have the best technologies in the non-leather footwear sector. Their entry will help domestic firms in increasing quality production," Sachan said, adding huge opportunities are there for investments in Uttar Pradesh and Bihar because of the availability of affordable labour in these states.
He said that Growmore International is also looking for collaborations with foreign firms to enhance the productivity of leather articles.

Balaramapuram road widening: Compensation disbursement to landowners likely this month

Thiruvananthapuram: Disbursement of compensation to 52 landowners affected by Kodinada-Vazhimukku road widening project is finally expected to commence this month after the district collector's office submits the finalised beneficiary list. Though state govt approved the package weeks ago, procedural delays in compiling the final list stalled the release of funds by the finance department. Parassala MLA C K Hareendran, overseeing the land acquisition, expressed confidence that the delay would be resolved swiftly. "There will not be any more delay. It's true there was some delay in handing over the list. The district collector is in New Delhi now. Once she returns, the list will be handed over and the compensation will be released," he said. The Rs 104-crore compensation, sanctioned by KIIFB, covers land acquisition and structure valuation. This is besides Rs 102.4 crore approved in June, raising the total compensation pool to approximately Rs 200 crore, including Rs 160 crore for land and Rs 40 crore for structures. Land acquisition efforts remained active despite the delay. Demolition along the 1.5 km stretch from Vazhimukku to Balaramapuram had begun earlier and was conducted by a Kunjalumoodu-based contractor under KRFB oversight. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like American Investor Warren Buffett Recommends: 5 Books For Turning Your Life Around Blinkist: Warren Buffett's Reading List Undo The initial delay was mainly due to financial clearances and technicalities in verifying landowner documentation. Once the beneficiary list is submitted, the finance department will transfer funds to the district collector, who will redirect it to the special tahsildar, triggering direct bank transfers to landowners shortly thereafter. Following fund release, public works department will issue tenders by Sept with construction set to begin in Oct, said Hareendran. The expanded road, widened to 30.2m, aims to ease chronic traffic congestion on the NH-66 corridor and better connect Parassala and Neyyattinkara to Thiruvananthapuram. The removal of plans for an underpass at Balaramapuram Junction, due to local opposition, pivoted focus to utilising govt land along a 300m stretch near Thaikkappalli mosque, reducing private land requirements.

IT spending to pick up after trade talk clarity: TCS chief

Bengaluru: TCS is navigating a challenging environment marked by delays in client decision-making and cautious discretionary spending, especially on projects with longer return cycles. In an interview with TOI, TCS CEO K Krithivasan expressed confidence that international revenue will exceed FY25 levels in FY26, contingent on improved clarity expected by late July or early Aug as trade discussions near completion. Excerpts: How has delay in decision-making and discretionary spends evolved since March quarter? TCS expects discretionary demand to recover based on tariff-related clarity. We find that programmes with immediate or shorter-term ROI (return on investment) are continuing. However, programmes perceived as more long-term are either fast-tracked or reduced in scope to be consumed in the short or medium term. Programmes with ROI spread over a longer period are being deferred or slowed down. When I mentioned July and Aug, I was hoping trade discussions between countries would conclude by then. Once clarity emerges and consumer confidence picks up in the US, I am hopeful customers will start spending. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like De MINI Countryman. We don't have any client-specific issues. Projects are getting descoped or delayed across multiple industries. While BFSI has grown in North America and the UK, it hasn't grown in Europe. On the BSNL deal, close to 90% of the sites are carrying commercial traffic. It's a natural and successful wind-down of the project — it had an impact of about 2.8% on the quarter-on-quarter growth. The international market fell by 0.3%, so the greater contribution came from here, but it was not unexpected. TCS COO said AI is driving efficiency at project level. How are firms measuring efficiency in AI-led coding tasks while accounting for the entire process? And is this shift starting to impact client costs yet? If efficiency gains are limited to IT projects alone, the overall benefit remains constrained. Even if IT projects deliver a 20-30% improvement in coding efficiency, that might only result in a 5-10% gain in overall value from conceptualisation to go-live. That's why end-to-end articulation and value-creation across all phases are essential to achieving meaningful productivity gains and measurable benefits leading to improved customer satisfaction and stronger sales performance. Clients are becoming aware of AI-driven productivity gains. Is this leading to commercial models with built-in productivity gains even before they are requested? If AI-led productivity is a good cannibaliser, we would happily embrace it because it's important to challenge ourselves in seeking productivity gains. It's also important to transparently discuss with customers what gains can be passed on, as it requires some investment from our side. This is happening in almost all major engagements. We proactively look for ways to deploy AI and enhance productivity. Clients are demanding certain productivity benefits to be achieved and passed on to them. We have discussions with customers about passing on productivity gains. It's a natural process. Employees say it's harder to secure projects matching their skills. Earlier, they usually found assignments within a month. There are reports that TCS has started withholding salaries for employees benched for extended periods. It's always been expected that associates take responsibility for their careers. While HR supports project placement, we also expect associates to proactively seek new assignments after completing existing ones. What you're seeing now is simply a more structured version of what's long been in practice. We aim to minimise bench time. Second, we invest heavily in upskilling. Once we've made that investment, we work to ensure associates are deployed. While preferences are considered, projects are driven by client needs, not personal choice. We deploy based on training, demand, and skill alignment. If gaps exist, we work to close them before deployment. Is there some slackness in the pyramid? Especially now that some resources are freed up after the BSNL ramp-down? There's no specific slackness. While the work is labour-intensive, it doesn't directly involve our senior associates. Much of it was handled by third-party resources, not our own.

3 years gone, but bus station revamp project yet to start

Ghaziabad: A plan to modernise three of Ghaziabad's busiest bus terminals — Kaushambi, Sahibabad, and Old Bus Adda — has been hit by repeated delays and will now be completed by 2028, four years past the original target. Proposed in 2021 by Uttar Pradesh State Road Transport Corporation (UPSRTC), the project was meant to give depots an airport-like upgrade, including automated ticketing, digital information systems, AC lounges and enhanced security measures to offer passengers a modernised, comfortable experience. Together, the three depots operate around 800 buses daily, half of which run on long-distance routes to cities like Lucknow, Prayagraj, Gorakhpur, and destinations in Bihar and Uttarakhand. Yet, progress on the Rs 484-crore revamp remains minimal. "The entire process, from procedural delays to environmental clearances, has pushed timelines significantly." Kaushambi depot, spread across 24,284 sq metres, is to be redeveloped at an estimated cost of Rs 261 crore. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like The Most Beautiful Women In The World Undo Sahibabad depot, covering 15,000 sq metres, is projected to cost Rs 161 crore, while the 10,000 sq metre Old Bus Adda depot will be revamped for Rs 62 crore. The revamped Kaushambi terminal is to be linked with Sahibabad and Old Bus Adda with Ghaziabad rapid rail stations to streamline multimodal transport. These three terminals are among 23 across the state selected for overhaul. The terminals are being developed under a PPP model. Tenders were floated in Dec 2022, and one firm was selected for all three projects. But delays in environmental approvals, clearance from the forest department required to cut down 25 trees at Kaushambi depot, has held up execution. A UPSRTC official said funds were deposited under CAMPA, or Compensatory Afforestation Fund Management and Planning Authority, for clearance, but the wait has dragged on. Complicating matters further is the logistical challenge of relocating operations during construction. "UPSRTC had initially considered shifting bus operations from Kaushambi to Arthala, but that plan didn't materialise," the UPSRTC official added. "We are now exploring temporary relocation to Anand Vihar Bus Terminal."
