Police receive three reports over anti-graft rally scuffle
KUALA LUMPUR: Police have received three reports following the Himpunan Rakyat Benci Rasuah 2.0 rally, which turned tense after a participant ignited a flare, sparking a scuffle between demonstrators and security personnel.
The rally, organised by Sekretariat Rakyat Benci Rasuah and attended by around 100 participants, including student groups, began at Kompleks Sogo before moving towards Dataran Merdeka.
Dang Wangi district police chief, Assistant Commissioner Sulizmie Affendy Sulaiman, said a participant lit a flare during the rally, releasing thick smoke that posed a safety risk to others.
He said officers quickly intervened to contain the situation, but a brief scuffle ensued, resulting in minor injuries to a policeman.
"During the preventive action taken, a minor scuffle broke out between rally participants and personnel from Op Aman, resulting in minor injuries to one policeman.
"The situation was quickly brought under control by police," he said in a statement today.
Sulizmie said three police reports had been lodged, and investigations are ongoing under Section 353 of the Penal Code for using criminal force to deter a public servant from discharging their duties, as well as Sections 3(5) and 14 of the Minor Offences Act 1955.
He also urged the public not to speculate on the incident, as this could interfere with ongoing investigations.
"Anyone with information is encouraged to contact the Kuala Lumpur police hotline at 03-2115 9999, the Dang Wangi district control centre at 03-2600 2222, or the nearest police station," he said.

Around 100 protesters gathered outside the Sogo shopping complex at about 2pm today before moving to Dataran Merdeka through Jalan Tuanku Abdul Rahman. They urged Putrajaya to strengthen the legal system and reinforce the independence of anti-corruption institutions.
