Barber becomes fourth man from pro-Islamic State WhatsApp group to be jailed
At his sentencing hearing on Friday, the court heard Hamad was in a WhatsApp group with people who shared his beliefs and support for IS, described as a 'terrorist organisation that encourages and glorifies religious and political violence'.
Also in the group was Roshman Saaed, 30, who was jailed for 12 years after he was found guilty following a trial in Birmingham last year of six counts of dissemination of a terrorist publication – three of which were shared to the same messaging group – and one count of entering into a terrorist funding arrangement.
Tshko Mohamad, 33, from West Bromwich, was jailed for seven years after he was convicted of entering into a terrorist funding arrangement and Omar Ahmadi, 24, from Sheffield, was jailed for five years and seven months after pleading guilty to the same offence.
Their convictions could not be reported until restrictions were lifted on Friday.
David Earl, prosecuting, said Hamad had come to the UK illegally from Iraqi Kurdistan in 2016.
He told authorities his life would be in danger and he would be arrested if he returned to his home country, the court heard.
Hamad said he had been a student of preacher Mullah Shwan, who he said used to teach him the Koran but had recently 'joined Daesh'.
He told interviewers: 'Because I was his student, police called me to attend a meeting so I've run away for my life.'
The court heard in June 2022 Mohamad sent a voicenote to Saaed telling him to set up the group with 'trusted brothers of the same belief and agenda'.
The group, which included Hamad, was set up later that day with the introductory message: 'Swearing by the almighty Allah, we have given a pledge of allegiance to almighty Allah that we will come to you under the flag of the Islamic State caliphate in whatever hole you are in this world.
'Otherwise we will, by Allah, separate your head from your body.'
Hamad shared a 'pro-Islamic State mindset' with others in the group, the court heard.
One video shared by another user showed a shackled soldier on fire with the caption: 'It contains roasting. It is very tasty.'
The court heard Hamad sent two videos in the group.
Mr Earl said the first, sent on December 9 2022, showed someone who claimed to be a student of Mullah Shwan, who appeared in numerous IS videos before he was killed, alongside other IS fighters, in 2015.
The video referred to soldiers of the so-called Islamic State and to 'brothers' being skilled in 'IED', meaning improvised explosive devices, Mr Earl said.
A second video was sent by Hamad on January 18 and showed three prisoners being beheaded in the street.
In a speech before the beheading, the man in the video said he was acting in revenge for an attack on Muslim people and promised: 'We will slaughter you one by one.'
Mr Earl said: 'The videos were sent intending them to be a direct or indirect encouragement or other inducement to the commission, preparation or instigation of acts of terrorism.'
The group was discovered in March 2023 when Ahmadi was arrested at Stansted Airport on his way to Turkey, with £7,000 hidden in baby milk powder tins.
When Hamad, who had a Kurdish Sorani interpreter in the dock, was arrested at his home in Wavertree, Liverpool, in March last year, he told officers: 'I lost my phone a long time ago. I want a solicitor.'
Kate O'Raghallaigh, defending Hamad, said: 'The court has seen evidence which is entirely consistent with this man being, in his real life, consistently a hard-working local barber in Liverpool who is not religious, not devout, leads a typical western lifestyle, attends nightclubs and so forth.'
Judge Neil Flewitt KC asked: 'Doesn't it rather beg the question, which is the real life?'
Photographs of Hamad at social events, including his own wedding, were submitted to the court along with a letter from his wife, who sat in the public gallery.
Sentencing, Judge Flewitt said: 'It is said that you live a characteristic western lifestyle, with many gay and lesbian friends, respecting everyone equally.
'On that basis, it is submitted that these offences represent an aberration in your life and undermine any suggestion that you are a committed ideologue.
'I have some difficulty with that submission because another interpretation of that material is that it demonstrates the hypocrisy of a person who is willing publicly to embrace a western lifestyle while privately supporting a terrorist organisation whose objective is to destroy it.'
Detective Superintendent Annie Miller, from Counter Terrorism Policing West Midlands, said: 'It's clear all these men were involved in supporting Islamic State.
'The group chat was used to promote propaganda and arrange to raise money in the UK to then send to IS to support their activities.
'It is entirely unacceptable to promote terrorism and we will not hesitate to investigate online behaviour or content which breaches terrorism or other criminal legislation.'

easyJet flight met by police after 'abusive' passenger urinates in aisle
Police officers stormed the plane on arrival in Tenerife on Wednesday morning. A disruptive passenger on board an easyJet flight is said to have urinated in the aisle, forcing staff to call ahead for police to meet the plane on arrival as a rowdy group caused trouble. The scenes played out on board the service from Birmingham to Tenerife South on Wednesday, July 2, with air traffic controllers giving it priority landing on the Spanish island, where it arrived just before 3.30am. Local newspaper Canarian Weekly reported the cabin crew had requested "urgent assistance" after the incident, with "significant disturbance" caused. The airline confirmed the group of passengers had become "abusive and threatening" during the flight. Police boarded the plane on arrival in Tenerife, the Mirror reports. However, it is not known whether any arrests were made. A spokesperson for easyJet said: "We can confirm that flight EZY6607 from Birmingham to Tenerife on 2 July was met by police on arrival due to a group of passengers behaving disruptively onboard. "easyJet's crew are trained to assess and evaluate all situations. They acted quickly and appropriately to ensure that the safety of the flight and other passengers was not compromised at any time. The safety and well-being of our passengers and crew is always easyJet's priority, and we do not tolerate abusive or threatening behaviour onboard." Join the Daily Record WhatsApp community! It comes just weeks after police were called to an easyJet flight bound for Marrakech in May, which had descended into chaos by rowdy British passengers on a stag party. Two men reportedly vaped on board, drank heavily and subjected the crew to abuse. Despite six warnings from staff, they continued to act in a rowdy manner, and the pilot was forced to divert to Faro, Portugal, leaving fellow passengers fuming. A witness claimed: "The men were vaping in their seats and toilet, drinking heavily and to my opinion already drunk or close to when boarding. They were being abusive towards staff on the flight and I think they had an undertone of homophobia toward the head steward." An easyJet spokesperson said the flight, from London Gatwick to Marrakech on May 19, "diverted to Faro and was met by police upon arrival due to a group of passengers behaving disruptively onboard". Once the passengers had left the aircraft, the flight then continued to Marrakech. "Our cabin crew are trained to assess and evaluate all situations and acted quickly and appropriately to ensure that the safety of the flight and other passengers was not compromised at any time. The safety and wellbeing of our passengers and crew is always easyJet's priority and we do not tolerate abusive or threatening behaviour onboard."

Woman's boyfriend brutally tortured to death in own home by her ex-partner
The couple's new build home was taped off by police for two weeks after the incident, as cops combed the scene for clues. A woman's boyfriend was brutally tortured to death in his own home by her ex-partner, a court has heard. Thomas Campbell's face was 'disfigured' during a ferocious and repeated attack carried out by girlfriend Demi-Lee Driver's "obsessed' ex. The horrific crime was carried out by John Belfield, along with two others including Thomas Campbell's ex wife, who, fuelled by jealousy and rage, wanted to send a murderous message to Demi. Hours after Demi tried to text and phone Thomas, the true horror of what had happened on Riverside in Mossley near Manchester on July 2, 2022 emerged. The couple's new build home was taped off by police for two weeks after the incident, as cops combed the scene for clues and the 31-year-old was brought down by an intricate probe which, used his phone data to track his movements, Manchester Evening News reports. Belfield sent a series of vile messages to her in the week leading up to the killing, detailing exactly what he thought of her, the court heard. As they continued to row, Belfield told her: 'You will never have a boyfriend you will have to move country give it a week and you will see why and what happens when you take the pi**'. In the lead-up to that the murder on July 2, a tracking device had been placed on Thomas Campbell's car, with the help of Thomas's former wife Coleen Campbell who used their children to confirm his whereabouts. Belfield goaded Thomas about how close he was getting to his ex-wife. "I'm going to sh** her for the point of it as well as saying you like her you soft boy,' Belfield told him in a message, days before murdering him. Thomas was then ambushed at his front door by three men, one of which was Belfield, and bundled into his home. Inside that house, he was stabbed, strangled, and had boiling water poured on his genitals. Blood coated the walls after the horrific attack. He suffered significant facial injuries, a hint that his attackers deliberately disfigured him. Join the Daily Record WhatsApp community! Coleen Campbell was found guilty of manslaughter following a trial in 2023, for her role in the horrendous plot. Reece Steven, who Belfield recruited into the crime, and was one of the three attackers to kill Thomas Campbell, was found guilty of murder. Stephen Cleworth, who Belfield also recruited and planted the tracking device on Campbell's car, was convicted of manslaughter. The trio were all also convicted of conspiring to rob Thomas Campbell. The third attacker who formed part of the group who attacked Campbell remains unknown and is wanted by police. Coleen Campbell, Steven and Cleworth were all jailed in 2023. But Belfield evaded police and fled the country two days after the murder. He was arrested in Suriname in March 2023 and eventually flown back to Manchester a year later. After a month long trial in July 2025, Belfield was found guilty of murder and conspiracy to rob. Jurors were unanimous on both counts. He faces a huge minimum term and will be sentenced next month.
