Jalen Williams calls Kobe Bryant the NBA's GOAT

USA Todaya day ago
Considering how vocal he's been about his fandom, it shouldn't be shocking to learn Jalen Williams believes Kobe Bryant is basketball's greatest of all time. The NBA champion trended on social media this past week for a side-by-side photo.
Williams answered questions of whether he was a good enough second-best player on a title contender with a resounding yes during the playoffs. The 24-year-old stepped up to help Shai Gilgeous-Alexander. His championship run was highlighted by a 40-point performance in the 2025 NBA Finals Game 5.
What makes Williams' run even more mythical is the quiet battle he endured. After he sustained torn wrist ligaments late in the regular season, he played through swelling and pain for two months in the playoffs. He'd receive pain-numbing shots before every playoff contest.
It was obvious Williams was playing through an ailment. His wrist was heavily wrapped. But the 24-year-old kept quiet about the injury. Anytime he was asked about it, he'd have a strong poker face. After Sam Presti announced his wrist surgery, he finally talked ad nauseam about the grueling day-to-day process.
Earlier this week, Williams took a photo of himself in pajamas, attempting a one-handed free throw with his hand cast. It's the same pose Bryant hit when he dealt with a hand fracture in 1999. The 24-year-old posted both photos on social media. It caused some backlash, but none of substance.
After Williams fired back at his haters by saying he's closer to Bryant than they are to him, he also proclaimed that he thinks Bryant is the best of all time. Williams wrote in a reply: "he da goat."
That's a popular opinion among some basketball circles. Bryant brought home five championships with the Los Angeles Lakers. That type of success on the NBA's biggest franchise will create a huge following. Even if there are a handful of players with better resumes, Bryant's fans will argue to the end of time that he's the greatest ever. Add Williams to that group.

New York Knicks snubbed latest Eastern Conference power rankings

After making a pair of big trades that helped get them to the Eastern Conference finals last offseason, the New York Knicks made more roster upgrades this summer. Armed with an abundance of depth and star power, they remain one of the league's top contenders. The timing of going all in has paid off for the Knicks, as they are in a good position to make a run at the NBA title in 2026. Teams like the Boston Celtics and Indiana Pacers will be without some of their top players due to injury, and other threats like the Milwaukee Bucks haven't improved much or at all. This opens the door for a team like New York to put together an even deeper run in the postseason. As the offseason rolls along, the people at updated their power rankings for the teams in the East. New York almost secured the top spot, slotting in at No. 2 behind the Cleveland Cavaliers. Looking at each team's offseason, a case could be made for the Knicks being put ahead of the Cavs. While they did undergo a coaching change, they are bringing back all of their core pieces and were able to add depth in the form of Jordan Clarkson and Guerschon Yabusele. Meanwhile, Cleveland has a big void to fill with guard Ty Jerome leaving in free agency. Come next season, the Knicks very well could find themselves atop these power rankings for an extended period. Jalen Brunson and Karl-Anthony Towns proved to be a strong duo and might only improve under a more offensive-minded coach in Mike Brown. Looking at the conference as a whole, it's hard not to view them as one of the favorites to represent the East in next year's NBA Finals.

Sixers star Tyrese Maxey posts motivational message on Twitter

Philadelphia 76ers star Tyrese Maxey is already a maniacal worker. The 5-year guard out of Kentucky averaged 26.3 points, 6.1 assists, and 3.3 rebounds in the 2024-25 season as he took on a bigger responsibility in terms of leadership and being the No. 1 guy on offense when considering all of the injuries. As Maxey and the Sixers continue to push forward, he knows there is still room to grow. He was recently in the gym with Memphis Grizzlies guard, and 2-time NBA champion, Kentavious Caldwell-Pope as he looks to take any lessons or advice he can get from anybody around the league. This time is important for him. He took to Twitter to post a motivational message with his famous phrase "1%" which refers to his mantra of getting 1% better every day. That's who Maxey is and he made sure to remind everybody of that mantra. If the Sixers can have any type of health in the 2025-26 season, they can bounce back and contend. On paper, they are a talented group led by Maxey, Joel Embiid, and Paul George so there is an opportunity for this group.
