Anganwadi pensioners stage protest in Madurai
Members of the Tamil Nadu Noon Meal Anganwadi Employees Pensioners Association staged a demonstration near the District Collectorate in Madurai on Tuesday, demanding implementation of long-pending issues.
The members urged the State government to implement a series of benefits that were promised in the past. The demonstrators demanded a minimum monthly pension of ₹7,850, along with gratuity, medical insurance, medical assistance and family pension provisions.
They also sought an increase in Pongal cash gifts for retired anganwadi workers.
State Vice President of the association P. Ayyankalai said, 'Even after serving for over 40 years the retired workers are receiving a mere ₹2,000 as pension'.
The association has resolved to organise the protest following a State executive committee meeting held in Tiruchi on April 30. The association said the continued inaction from the government had left them with no alternative but to stage a protest and urging the authorities to fulfil their demands.

You have been leading this party since its formation. Where does it stand now in terms of political influence? I founded this party on July 16, 1989. Today, it's strong, spread across Tamil Nadu, and 95% of the cadres stand with me. They see me as one of them — some even as a god. In 36 years, I've seen victories and defeats like any party. The solution to the current crisis is appointing him as a working president as he must go to every town, engage with the youth, and help the party grow before the election. He should affirm his commitment to follow my guidance and express his willingness to work as a cadre, without holding the position of working president. Chief minister M K Stalin is an example. My friend Kalaignar (M Karunanidhi) remained active in a wheelchair till 94. During an allies' meeting, I suggested he delegate responsibilities to Stalin. Within a week, Stalin was made deputy chief minister and today, leads the state. You called on Stalin in 2023. That was to request a caste census for 10.5% internal reservation for vanniyars. Anbumani publicly offered support to DMK if vanniyars are granted a 15% internal quota. I am ready to align with DMK if it offers a 15% quota for vanniyars. What prompted you to announce Mukundan's appointment as PMK youth wing president at a party meeting? After Anbumani's promotion, a vacancy opened up, and film producer G K M Tamil Kumaran was offered the post. When Kumaran informed Anbumani, he told him to resign immediately and tear up the appointment order. I advised him not to. Later, while Kumaran and his family were in Puducherry for a general council meeting, Anbumani called me and insisted Kumaran shouldn't attend. Kumaran eventually stayed away. Two months later, I told him to tear up the appointment order. I then appointed Mukundan, knowing he would support both of us. When a council meeting was held in Chennai, Mukundan asked if he could attend. I said yes. Later, Anbumani asked him if he was my political advisor. Any plans for a general council? It will be decided after consultation with district secretaries. In that case, aren't Anbumani's district-wise scheduled general council meetings forbidden? I feel the same. Cadres are upset by the fall-out as it comes barely a year ahead of the election. They are more than cadres. They are my life and will stand behind me until my last breath. PMK rift widens as Ramadoss senior lashes out at son
Photo/Agencies The rift between PMK founder S Ramadoss and Anbumani Ramadoss grew nastier Thursday with senior Ramadoss levelling serious charges against his 56-year-old son, accusing him of throwing a bottle at his mother, calling him a liar, and failing to lead the party "in the right direction". Speaking to media in Villupuram, the 85-year-old claimed, "Everyone regards their mother as goddess. During Pongal, Anbumani's mother asked him if we had appointed his second daughter as the youth wing leader. In response, Anbumani lifted a bottle and threw it at his own mother. Fortunately, it didn't hit her, and it hit the wall. This is just a sample." This was in reference to Anbumani objecting to Ramadoss appointing his daughter's son, P Mukundan, as PMK's youth wing chief. Mukundan resigned his post Thursday citing personal reasons. Ramadoss accused Anbumani of lying "without shame", adding that his son was "creating internal power struggles". Anbumani convened a meeting of party netas for next three days starting Friday. He didn't issue a statement but decided to prove who is powerful in party, said sources close to Anbumani. Anbumani had already discussed and finalised alliance with Edappadi K Palaniswami (AIADMK general secretary). But suddenly, Anbumani and Sowmya came over and cried, insisting on an alliance with the BJP," Ramadoss added. "They cried for so long, I had no choice but to give in. An AIADMK-PMK alliance would have been a natural one. Had it happened, PMK might have won three seats, while AIADMK could have won six or seven," he added. Ramadoss said he was no longer responsible for Anbumani's actions as PMK's working president. He criticised his son's leadership and indicated plans to convene a general council meeting. The meeting is meant to be a threat to remove Anbumani from his post, said sources. Ramadoss accused Anbumani of distancing himself from PMK's core principles. He recalled that Anbumani asked him what wrong he had done and whether it was justified to remove him from his party position.
