Same fries, different name: Kennywood sale results in change for Waldameer food stand

Yahoo16-04-2025
Change remains a constant at Waldameer Park & Water World in Erie, which opened for business in 1896.
One of the changes coming to the park's concessions in 2025 involves fries at the Potato Patch stand, which will be offered as always this year. But the Potato Patch sign won't be on display.
That change was a product of the recent sale of Kennywood Amusement Park in West Mifflin to Herschend Family Entertainment, which also owns Dollywood in Pigeon Forge, Tennessee.
What to know: Who just bought Kennywood, Idlewild and Dutch Wonderland?
Kennywood not only operated a Potato Patch of its own, but held a copyright on the name. Former Waldameer owner Paul Nelson, who died in 2023, had been friends with previous Kennywood owners and had a longtime understanding that he was free to use the Potato Patch name, said Steve Gorman, president of the family-owned Erie amusement park.
That agreement, however, ended with the recent sale of the Pittsburgh-area amusement park. Waldameer had to come up with a new name for the stand next to the Water World entrance, Gorman said.
"We are keeping the same products. It's just a name," he said.
And the new name, Gorman said, is "The Tasty Tater."

City of Pittsburgh honors Gus and Yiayia's with ceremonial street renaming

It's a Pittsburgh summer tradition that's about more than just flavor on ice. Gus and Yiayia's is a legacy on wheels and a taste of childhood for generations of Pittsburghers. Now, that legacy is officially rooted in Northside history right next to Allegheny Commons Park. "It's very emotional for me today because it's been so many years," said Christina Avlon, daughter of Gus Kalaris. "My family has been here in the park serving ice balls to hundreds and hundreds of loyal customers." It's a business and a legacy that began in 1934 and was passed down through generations. What started as a simple summer treat is now permanently honored as a symbol of Pittsburgh. Gus Kalaris passed away last year at 92. He'd been scooping shaved ice since he was just 8 years old, continuing the family tradition started by his parents. Stella, affectionately known as Yiayia, passed in 2016. Still, their presence lives on in every scoop and every smile. "What an honor for Gus and his wife Stella," said Mike Spanos, manager of the cart. "They put a lot of dedication into this. They were like parents to a lot of people." "His ministry was the people," said Mayor Ed Gainey. "His ministry was the ability to talk to people and let people know just how much he cared about them and then give them an ice ball." The honorary street sign now hangs above the Northside, allowing the community to celebrate a legacy that brought joy with every icy treat. "I know my parents are looking down today and they're happy," Christina said. "They're so happy this happened."

'Drag Race' Couple Kori King and Lydia B Kollins Will Headline New TV Show (Exclusive)

'Drag Race' Couple Kori King and Lydia B Kollins Will Headline New TV Show (Exclusive) originally appeared on Parade. You can never have too much butthole. Of course, we're speaking of Lydia Butthole Kollins. The Pittsburgh drag queen burst onto the scene earlier this year when she appeared on Season 17 of RuPaul's Drag Race, where she found love with fellow competitor (and Cameo legend) Kori King. Lydia then returned almost immediately to the Drag Race stage as a competitor on Season 10 of RuPaul's Drag Race All Stars, which will air its finale next week. Fans haven't seen the last of Lydia and Kori, though! The pair will next be helming Binge Queens: Absolutely Fabulous on WOW Presents Plus. In the show, Lydia and Kori, who recently moved in together, will be binge-watching the first season of the iconic BBC series Absolutely Fabulous. The showmance duo will be watching the raucous comedy for the first time, delivering commentary over the season's six episodes. 🎬 SIGN UP for Parade's Daily newsletter to get the latest pop culture news & celebrity interviews delivered right to your inbox 🎬 Drag Race fans will also be able to watch Absolutely Fabulous on their own as WOW Presents Plus acquired the rights to air the cult-classic TV show from the BBC with all six seasons as well as the 2002 and 2004 specials, available to stream on the platform. World of Wonder's streamer also acquired streaming rights to the BBC documentary Elton John: Uncensored. Both Binge Queens: Absolutely Fabulous, along with the legendary comedy, will be available to stream worldwide starting on July 14, with Elton John: Uncensored coming on July 21. 'We can't wait for our fans to watch Absolutely Fabulous with us, whether it's their first time or their hundredth,' said Kori King and Lydia B. Kollins. 'We watch absurd shows like this together all the time, and it's been so exciting opening the door to our private nonsense with this series." Related: But wait, THERE'S MORE! In addition to Drag Race Season 17, All Stars Season 10, Binge Queens and their delightfully unhinged social media accounts, Lydia and Kori are also set to star in a second WOW Presents Plus series currently in production and slated to arrive on the platform this year. "This is just the beginning of our projects with WOW Presents Plus," the pair teased about the secret project, "So stay tuned and get excited for more!' Here's hoping that Kori and Lydia's second show will involve the return of Kori Toot. 'Drag Race' Couple Kori King and Lydia B Kollins Will Headline New TV Show (Exclusive) first appeared on Parade on Jul 10, 2025 This story was originally reported by Parade on Jul 10, 2025, where it first appeared.
