Josh Brolin steps into the horror genre for the first time with "Weapons"

Academy Award nominee Josh Brolin steps into the horror genre for the first time in his latest film, "Weapons," playing a father desperate for answers after several children, including his own, mysteriously vanish. Describing his character, Brolin said he is "a victim of their circumstances" and a man who wants control. "He doesn't have his kid. And then he realizes what he was not giving his kid, which was affection and time and presence," Brolin said. The film explores masculinity, a theme Brolin wanted to confront. "I loved the idea of confronting masculinity like that," he said. "We all live by that says we don't do anything and we don't smile and we don't laugh, we don't cry and all this kind of stuff, and you go have the thing that you care most about be taken away from you." Brolin, known for blockbuster roles like Thanos in Marvel's "Avengers" films and for "Dune," said he chose the role as a creative challenge. "You choose these roles and you go, 'How can I be challenged? How can I continue to?'" after 41 years in the industry, he said. Though new to horror as an actor, Brolin said the genre shaped his childhood. "It's also a genre I have not really been involved with," he said, adding that he liked "the idea of not knowing if I can do something." He stayed away from horror projects while raising his children, but he grew up watching "Friday the 13th" and "The Blob," inspired by his mother, who "loved horror films and read a lot of like true crime books." "Weapons" opens in theaters and IMAX on Friday.

Margaret Qualley Took the Iconic Cosmo Quiz Between Making Movies

Hearst Owned You know when someone is so booked and busy it feels kind of spiritual? That's Margaret Qualley right now. Case in point: The very morning she sat down to chat with Cosmopolitan editor-in-chief Willa Bennett for her 60th anniversary cover interview, her latest film Honey Don't!—the second entry in Ethan Coen and Tricia Cooke's Drive-Away Dolls lesbian road trip trilogy—was announced to premiere at Cannes. Not bad for a random Wednesday. And that's not all she has going on right now. She is also starring in Richard Linklater's Blue Moon and just wrapped Huntington, a darkly funny thriller with Glen Powell—and yes, you did spot her in Happy Gilmore 2 on Netflix last weekend. Somehow, she still managed to show up to the set of her cover shoot on time and with the vibe of a girl who borrowed her best friend's sweater on the way out the door—not the air you'd expect of someone redefining screen stardom before our very eyes. She understandably had no time to fill out her version of our iconic Cosmo Quiz between photo setups, but she promised she'd get it done—and she's a woman of her word! So she FedEx'd us her completed copy from yes, she was working on yet another movie. (We knew she'd come through!) Over more than a decade in the game, Margaret's made a name for herself inhabiting characters who sit right at the intersection of womanhood, contradiction, and full-blown emotional hurricane. And we wouldn't have it any other way. The answers to her quiz aren't indicative of any characters though. They're quintessentially Margaret. Married. Jack Antonoff. Adam Sandler. Asheville, NC. Amazon CEO ‘Cannot Wait' to Start Denis Villeneuve's James Bond Movie

Amazon can already hear the strains of John Barry's iconic theme paired with that gun barrel shot — the one to which Sean Connery, George Lazenby, Roger Moore, Timothy Dalton, Pierce Brosnan, and Daniel Craig have all leant their figures. CEO Andy Jassey said on a July 31 call (which highlighted his company's better-than-expected Q3 earning) that 'James Bond is in the hands of one of today's greatest filmmakers,' and adding, 'We cannot wait to get started on 007's next adventure.' Jassey is referring to none other than Denis Villeneuve, who was announced in June as the next director to take on the franchise — which already has 25 official releases in its canon. Villeneuve will have the unique position of being the first steward to not be collaborating with the Broccoli family, which has overseen every Bond movie since 'Dr. No' in 1962. More from IndieWire Noah Baumbach Had a 'Quiet Crisis' After 'White Noise' Didn't Take Off 'Highest 2 Lowest' Trailer: Spike Lee's Latest Joint Is an Entertaining Homage to Akira Kurosawa How exactly Amazon MGM Studios will handle Bond has been a subject of debate — including in a think piece from IndieWire's own Christian Blauvelt — but signing on Villeneuve, whose 'Dune' series and 'Arrival' earned a bevy of Oscar nominations, seems to indicate a commitment to properly stewarding the next 007 incarnation. In June, Villeneuve — who will start work on 'Bond 26' after he finishes up 'Dune: Messiah' — described himself as a major Bond-head, releasing the statement: 'Some of my earliest movie-going memories are connected to 007. I grew up watching James Bond films with my father, ever since 'Dr. No' with Sean Connery. I'm a die-hard Bond fan. To me, he's sacred territory. I intend to honor the tradition and open the path for many new missions to come. This is a massive responsibility, but also, incredibly exciting for me and a huge honor. Amy, David, and I are absolutely thrilled to bring him back to the screen. Thank you to Amazon MGM Studios for their trust.' Major speculation has proliferated online as to whom might take on the iconic role next, with most of that discourse centering around the rumored involvement of Tom Holland. 'Listen, there's speculation at the minute,' Holland told Gordon Ramsay on the chef's YouTube series. 'We'll keep it to a minimum for now… we'll get there one day.' Holland has taken a significant break from on-screen roles in order to recharge. He has not been seen on movie screens since the 2022 release of 'Uncharted,' and on TV screens since the 2023 Apple TV+ miniseries 'The Crowded Room.' 'I feel really blessed to be at a point in my career where I can take time off, reset, and come back ready to go,' he told British GQ. 'You can't be in every movie, and you can't do your best work when you're burnt out. What I've learnt is that it's important to set boundaries – to be mindful about overworking. I've got a slightly busy year next year, and then I'll probably take a bit more time off in 2027. We'll see.' Holland has a busy summer 2026 on the way, however, with next July bringing both 'The Odyssey' and 'Spider-Man: Brand New Day,' which he teased on Instagram on August 2. On July 31, IndieWire reported that 'Peaky Blinders' creator Steven Knight would pen the screenplay for 'Bond 26,' which does not yet have a release date or title.
