
New transit system working through ‘glitches'
Coun. Janice Lukes said it's not surprising these concerns are the most common, as riders adjust to a new primary transit network that rolled out June 29.
She urged passengers to report all issues directly to 311, which will ensure Winnipeg Transit receives them.
'Is (the system) perfect? No. There will be some glitches we have to work through … We will be making adjustments, probably on bus stops,' said Lukes, the chairwoman of council's public works committee.
The Waverley West councillor expects the new spine-and-feeder system, which uses community feeder routes to connect to more central ones, should make many buses more reliable.
'Instead of a bus starting in one end of the city and weeding its way through the entire city … these feeder routes connecting to main lines allow for better predictability in the timing of (bus arrivals.) You're going to have better connectivity and better connections, but you have to transfer and that is something that's not changing,' said Lukes.
Winnipeg Transit said the new network will improve bus service for around 60 per cent of passengers, stay the same for around 30 per cent of riders and get worse for around 10 per cent.
'When you think of the millions of trips that we do… there are some challenges in certain areas but, in other areas, it's going great,' said Lukes.
The system is designed to ensure buses arrive every 15 minutes or less during peak hours on the most frequent routes, which Lukes said should help improve service and increase ridership overall.
She urged riders to be patient while trying out the system in its early days, noting construction delays could be adding to commute times right now.
Meanwhile, Winnipeggers have shared concerns about the new system.
Jasmeet Kaur said her new commute between downtown and Erin Street is frustrating, inconvenient and complicated, to the extent she is considering alternative transportation this winter.
'We asked for better service, more buses and improved timing. What we got instead was fewer routes, reduced accessibility and longer travel times. What used to take me 20 minutes now takes anywhere from 50 minutes to an hour and 20 minutes. That's not a small change — it's a complete disruption of daily life,' Kaur recently wrote to the Free Press.
In an interview, she said her previous direct route was replaced by one with a transfer. The first bus is often early or late, which has led her to miss the second bus once, said Kaur.
Since buses arrive on her second route roughly every 50 minutes, she opted to call an Uber to finish the trip.
'It is so frustrating… it's very unreliable to take the next bus,' said Kaur.
John Simba, a Point Douglas resident, said the new network replaced two routes he relied on to reach downtown.
The replacement route now requires a transfer at an inconvenient 'side street' stop, instead of travelling directly to a community hub such as the Polo Park mall, where one of his past routes made a stop.
'My first concern is where we catch the bus (to transfer). I now have to catch the bus at Burrows (Avenue) and McPhillips (Street), which is sometimes not (as safe)… especially when fall/winter hours come and it's dark outside,' said Simba.
It now takes an average of 15 minutes longer to reach his workplace. If he misses the feeder route bus closest to his home, the next one won't arrive for 45 minutes, he said.
River Heights resident Taylor Reisdorf said he decided against trying out the new bus system, after determining online that his new route would likely take 40 minutes or more to reach downtown instead of the previous 15 to 20.
'It was no longer practical for me to take the bus. Since the change… I have been riding my bike,' said Reisdorf.
'If the buses don't go where people need, it doesn't matter if they come twice as often,' he added.
Reisdorf said he ruled out a few potentially quicker ride times that allowed just one minute between transfers, which he feared wouldn't prove possible.
Winnipeg Transit did not grant an interview request.
In an email, a Transit spokeswoman noted 'not every transit user will have an improvement in overall trip time,' while stating transfers can support a more frequent, reliable service.
Weekday Mornings

The spokeswoman said Transit is closely tracking feedback on the network, including complaints about longer trip times.
'This feedback will be used to make tweaks to our network and schedule in the short term. It will also inform potential larger changes (service expansions) we may recommend in the years to come,' wrote Megan Benedictson.
Benedictson said the bus stop at Burrows Avenue and McPhillips Street was chosen because it is a key junction between a regional road with frequent bus service and a collector street with community bus routes.

Seeing the forest and the trees
Di Brandt was a 'barefoot girl from the Mennonite village' when she moved to Winnipeg at 17 years old for college. Unfamiliar, out of place, untethered. Assiniboine Forest, a short walk from Canadian Mennonite University, became her safe haven. 'This forest was a wonderful halfway place between the country where I had grown up and the city that was so confusing to me in every way. It's a very deeply cherished place for me, then and many years later,' says Winnipeg's inaugural poet laureate, seated on a shady park bench on a hot weekday afternoon. Ruth Bonneville / Free Press Poet Di Brandt at one of her favourite places, in the woods at Assiniboine Forest Brandt, 73, knew from a very young age she would eventually leave Reinland, the darpa, or village, where she was raised in southern Manitoba. It was the early 1970s and the community was at a crossroads, trying to preserve its traditional ways while modernity was creeping in around the edges. Growing up, Brandt herself felt pulled in contradictory directions: speaking Plautdietsch at home, where reading and questioning were frowned upon, and German at church, where women were barred from leadership roles. All while attending an English-speaking public school. 'We were getting educated in three completely different cultural paradigms and ways of being,' she says, adding the upbringing also provided an appreciation for language and cross-culturalism. After graduating high school, a student loan allowed for a swift exit. Her devastated parents drove her to the campus on Shaftesbury Boulevard, then called Canadian Mennonite Bible College. 'They felt like they had failed to protect the traditionalism of the culture,' Brandt says. 'They spent a lot of really creative energy and care trying to create a whole world for us so we didn't have to leave or want to leave.' She discovered the forest within days of moving into her dorm. The sprawling woods provided a reprieve from navigating the big city and conversations with strangers — something that was completely foreign coming from an insular village where everyone knew everyone and their family history. Between studying theology, experimenting with trending fashions and attending rock concerts, Brandt spent hours alone in Assiniboine Forest, roaming beyond the built pathways through swaths of birch, poplar and oak. She got to know the different groves and swampy places. She listened to the trees and shared space with deer, ducks and geese. Communing with nature has been a lifelong practice — private and spiritual. 'When I was a little kid, maybe five or six, I would say to myself, 'Oh, I haven't gone and appreciated nature yet today.' And I would go outside and lie in the grass and choose something to appreciate,' Brandt says. In the highly social darpa, the countryside offered treasured alone time. At school, she kept her woodsy wanderings to herself. On the occasion that a classmate found out she had spent an entire day in the forest, she would be met with a surprising reaction. 'They were like, 'What? That's really dangerous, you shouldn't be wandering around in a forest by yourself,'' says Brandt, who found the busy traffic and downtown crowds more scary. She acclimatized and found her calling, thanks to professors who supported her creative writing and encouraged her to pursue intellectual aspirations. Brandt has since gone on to become an internationally renowned poet and scholar. Her first collection of poetry — questions i asked my mother, published by Turnstone Press in 1987 — became a bestseller and was shortlisted for a Governor General's Award. She's travelled the world, held teaching positions at multiple Canadian universities and, in 2018, was named the city's first poet laureate by the Winnipeg Arts Council. Yet at the time, Brandt's feminist critique of her upbringing was met with strong backlash from local Mennonite religious leaders (including at her alma mater), leading her to be shunned by her home community and estranged from some family members. Throughout her globetrotting career, Brandt — who now lives in North Point Douglas — has maintained her connection to Assiniboine Forest, visiting the woods often and exploring the trails with her late husky-Labrador mix, Maddie. Her return to CMU has been more recent. Last month, she presented at Mennonite/s Writing, an international literary conference hosted at the university for the first time and which Brandt has been involved in since its founding in 1990. Brandt is currently in a season of return — revisiting spaces she was previously ostracized from and having a dialogue with the people there. 'That has been a challenging but also creative conversation,' she says. 'I feel like I'm redoing the project that began my career, but with a lot more overview and resources now.' 8 Manitobans honoured for water rescue heroism
Christian Clavelle was dozing off in a beach chair at St. Malo Provincial Park when he heard a shout seeking someone who knew CPR. Jolted awake, he rushed down to the beach to find a three-year-old boy who had wandered into the water, face down and not breathing. The 44-year-old from Winnipeg, who teaches first aid and was on a family camping trip with his wife and two children, began performing chest compressions. Quickly, the boy started coughing up water, regaining colour in his face and breathing again. (Matthew Frank / Free Press) When Clavelle saw those signs, he raised a thumbs-up to the child's panicking parents and the group that had gathered on the sand. On Thursday, Clavelle and eight other Manitobans (including two park officers at St. Malo that day) received Rescue Commendation Awards from Lifesaving Society Manitoba and Lt.-Gov. Anita Neville for their bravery and quick-thinking during water rescues around the province in 2024. The annual ceremony was held at Government House on the Manitoba Legislative Building's grounds. During the the events of that summer day on Aug. 3, Clavelle said he kept thinking about his own family and how he'd feel as the parent of the injured child. 'I remembered how important my own kids were to me,' he said. 'Being able to save and carry the child of parents that could've lost their only child felt phenomenal.' Clavelle has been first-aid instructor for 23 years and is the president of Canadian First-Aid Training. He said he's taught thousands of people to do CPR, but that incident was the first time he has personally used it to revive someone. Because of his training, he was 'dialed in' and confident in the moment. (Matthew Frank / Free Press) 'I've been talking about it for years, like, this is what I do for a living,' Clavelle told the Free Press. 'I was fortunate, and it's not like that for everybody. But in this case, it was just right place, right time.' The boy's family later reached out to reconnect, Clavelle said. He added it feels lucky to have that type of closure, because he said not many first responders have such an opportunity. The Thursday afternoon ceremony marked the second honour Clavelle has received for the St. Malo rescue. In November, he was presented the Canadian Red Cross Rescuer Award. Drownings are the third-leading cause of accidental death in Manitoba, according to Lifesaving Society Manitoba. An average of 21 people drown in the province each year, with 72 per cent occurring between May and September, as per 2017-21 data from the charity. Less than two per cent of drownings occurred in a lifeguard-supervised setting. Lakes and ponds had the highest concentration of drowning deaths in the province, with 35 per cent. 'We want people to know that the citizens in Manitoba are willing to step up and help each other when something dangerous happens. It's a wonderful thing.' She said people should pay attention to their surroundings and always be watching any children in the water so they can prevent emergencies from happening. It's common to hear people say they didn't know someone was drowning, despite being close by, Stefanchuck said. 'People love to be around the water, especially in our country and province, and knowing what to look for to make sure people are safe is a great way to make sure you have a good time out there.'
