This Cubs Rookie Could Be Crucial Down Stretch

Based on facts, either observed and verified firsthand by the reporter, or reported and verified from knowledgeable sources. Newsweek AI is in beta. Translations may contain inaccuracies—please refer to the original content. The Chicago Cubs are beginning to get excellent contributions from rookies. Between the post-All-Star break hot streak from rookie third baseman Matt Shaw to Saturday's excellent start from rookie right-hander Cade Horton, the rookies are producing. Horton especially, could be a pivotal part of what Cubs fans and front office members hope will be a deep postseason run. CHICAGO, ILLINOIS - JULY 26: Pitcher Cade Horton #22 and catcher Carson Kelly #15 of the Chicago Cubs fist bump at the conclusion of the third inning of the game against the Chicago White Sox... CHICAGO, ILLINOIS - JULY 26: Pitcher Cade Horton #22 and catcher Carson Kelly #15 of the Chicago Cubs fist bump at the conclusion of the third inning of the game against the Chicago White Sox at Rate Field on July 26, 2025 in Chicago, Illinois. MoreHorton was Chicago's top pitching prospect entering the season after an offseason of recovering from injuries. He was promoted to make his MLB debut May 10 against the New York Mets and has been a mainstay in the rotation since then. After 6 1/3 shutout innings and a win against the Chicago White Sox on Saturday, Horton is now 4-3 with a 3.67 ERA in his rookie campaign. Horton has been especially good over his last seven outings, as four of those have been scoreless outings with 5 2/3 innings pitched in each one of them. Four pitchers have had 4 scoreless starts of 5+ innings since June 1. Cade Horton Matthew Boyd Tarik Skubal Paul Skenes — Christopher Kamka (@ckamka) July 27, 2025 Horton had been struggling in road starts to the tune of a 6.35 ERA prior to Saturday's stellar outing. Saturday surely could've been a huge confidence boost and exactly what Horton needed to re-gain a little confidence. The Cubs will need him to maintain that confidence, as contributions from rookies in the postseason can be one of the keys to a deep run. Take the standout performance from Evan Carter two seasons ago. Carter burst onto the scene and had a .300 average with 10 extra-base hits and a .917 OPS during the Ranger's run to the World Series. Nobody will be expecting Horton to turn into prime Jake Arrieta during the postseason, bit if he can give Chicago multiple starts of five or six innings, the Cubs will have to like their chances of winnings those games. A postseason trio of Horton, Matthew Boyd and Shota Imanaga would be one of the best in all of baseball and could be the reason Chicago wins its first World Series since 2016. ATP Washington Final: De Minaur vs. Davidovich Fokina odds, picks, and prediction

Gambling content 21+. The New York Post may receive an affiliate commission if you sign up through our links. Read our editorial standards for more information. The Washington Open always produces some surprises. Given its spot in the calendar — just a couple of weeks after Wimbledon and right before the Canadian Masters — it catches a lot of the best players in an awkward spot. That leaves the door open for a player like Alejandro Davidovich Fokina to crash the party. The Spaniard is no also-ran, and is the current World No. 26, but he's never won a title in his ATP career. He can break that schneid with a win over Alex de Minaur on Sunday. ATP Washington: Alex de Minaur vs. Alejandro Davidovich Fokina odds Player Odds Alex de Minaur -250 Alejandro Davidovich Fokina +200 Odds via bet365 There's no question about Davidovich Fokina's talent. He's a terrific shot-maker and a player who can drive his opponents nuts with his ability to level up for a game, set, or a match. Davidovich Fokina is a dangerous player in a one-off, which is why he's got 12 wins over top-10 opponents in his career. What has held the 26-year-old back has been his inconsistency. He can look like a completely different player in any given match. His opponent on Sunday, de Minaur, is very much the opposite. Alejandro Davidovich Fokina is 0-3 in ATP Finals in his career. Getty Images The Australian is relentless, consistent, and wants to wear down his opponents with long rallies. That could spell trouble for Davidovich Fokina, who wants to keep points shorter than de Minaur, relying on his ability to paint lines and pull points from out of nowhere. Given how much time Davidovich Fokina has spent on court in this tournament compared to de Minaur, you'd have to give the edge to the Australian, should things stay on script. But the Spaniard has a way of getting matches to zig and zag, which could unsettle the Aussie in this final. Davidovich Fokina is 0-3 in his career with a trophy on the line, but he's good value to finally get into the winner's circle on Sunday. The Play: Alejandro Davidovich Fokina (+200, bet365) Why Trust New York Post Betting Michael Leboff is a long-suffering Islanders fan, but a long-profiting sports bettor with 10 years of experience in the gambling industry. PDC Darts World Matchplay Final: Luke Littler vs. James Wade odds, prediction

Gambling content 21+. The New York Post may receive an affiliate commission if you sign up through our links. Read our editorial standards for more information. The World Matchplay always brings big moments, and Luke Littler delivered one in his semifinal against Josh Rock. Down 6-1 in a race to 17 legs, Littler and Rock produced a perfect leg of darts, with 'The Nuke' completing the nine-darter. The Winter Gardens reacted as you'd expect. That leg turned the match around for Littler, who advanced to the World Matchplay Final for the first time in his career. Littler, 18, will meet James 'The Machine' Wade in Sunday afternoon's final (Peacock, 3:15 p.m. ET). Littler, the reigning World Champion, is a massive -575 favorite over Wade, who is searching for his second World Matchplay and 11th major title. World Matchplay Final preview: Littler vs. Wade odds Player Odds James Wade +390 Luke Littler -575 Littler has completely changed the landscape of darts. Not only does the 18-year-old boast immense talent, but he's got an incredible disposition on the big stage. There's nowhere to hide in darts, and Littler relishes that side of the sport better than just about anybody we've ever seen. Did we mention he's only 18? Wade, 42, is one of the most experienced and accomplished players in the history of the PDC. The former mechanic has won almost everything there is to be won in this sport, and he's enjoying a bit of a resurgence after a down year in 2024. This is Wade's seventh trip to the World Matchplay Final, and the only time he's lifted the trophy was in 2007, just a few months after Littler was born. James Wade has won 10 major titles in his PDC career. Getty Images While Littler's combination of scoring power and ability to close out legs is now unmatched in the sport, Wade is one of the best players in darts at hanging around and hitting his doubles. In some formats, that would make Wade a dangerous underdog, but in a best-of-35 match, there is plenty of runway for Littler to use his ability to get white hot to put some distance between him and 'The Machine.' Littler's price is quite short, but bettors can find some value by backing the teenager to win by at least eight legs, which is paying +165 on DraftKings. The Play: Littler -7.5 legs (+165, DraftKings) Why Trust New York Post Betting Michael Leboff is a long-suffering Islanders fan, but a long-profiting sports bettor with 10 years of experience in the gambling industry.
