ToU scheme offers smarter energy management for consumers
According to the official myTNB website, the ToU scheme—also available to customers with Current Transformer (CT) Operated Meters or Remote Meter Reading (RMR) systems—offers greater flexibility for users to manage their energy usage according to their individual needs.
'With the option to schedule electricity usage during cheaper off-peak hours, consumers can now proactively reduce their monthly bills without compromising comfort,' said Tenaga Nasional Berhad (TNB) on its official website.
The initiative is part of the Energy Commission's (ST) recent announcement of a new electricity tariff structure that allows consumers to shift their usage to more affordable off-peak periods.
The ToU scheme has been revised and expanded to include longer off-peak periods—the entire day on Saturdays and Sundays, as well as from 10 pm to 2 pm the following day on weekdays (Monday to Friday). Peak hours are from 2 pm to 10 pm on weekdays.
For instance, consumers who shift the use of household appliances such as washing machines, air conditioners, or electric vehicle (EV) chargers to off-peak hours may enjoy savings on their electricity bills.
'The off-peak energy charge for monthly usage of 1,500 kilowatt hours (kWh) and below is set at 24.43 sen/kWh.
'Meanwhile, the peak energy charge for the same monthly usage is 28.52 sen/kWh for ToU consumers, compared to 27.03 sen/kWh for general domestic consumers,' the website explained.
To help users better understand potential savings, TNB has introduced an online Electricity Bill Calculator on the myTNB portal. Consumers can select their preferred tariff and estimate their bill before deciding to switch to the ToU scheme.
Applications to switch to the ToU scheme can be submitted starting July 1, 2025 by emailing the completed application form and required documents to [email protected], or by visiting the nearest Kedai Tenaga.
Online applications via the myTNB portal will be available from Aug 1, 2025.

ASTANA: Kazakhstan is looking to enhance cooperation with Sabah in the areas of tourism, investment, and education following a recent working visit by a Malaysian business delegation. Malaysia's position as a hub for affordable medical tourism has also attracted interest from Kazakhstan, which Nordin said may benefit private hospitals and rehabilitation centres in Sabah. Beyond tourism, the delegation was also briefed on investment opportunities in several key sectors. One of the main projects involves a conveyor belt manufacturing plant led by Aytei Group to serve the agriculture, mining, and heavy industries. Kazakhstan is also opening its doors to partners in the processing of technogenic mineral waste (TMW), a legacy of the Soviet era. The country holds over five billion tonnes of mineral waste, including valuable metals such as copper, and is seeking foreign expertise to develop modern processing facilities. In the energy sector, the Tortai oil field in Atyrau region, which holds an estimated 82.1 million barrels in geological reserves, is open for foreign investment. Twenty-two wells have been drilled, with four currently in production. Kazakhstan is also planning a large-scale shift to electric vehicles (EVs), aiming for 80 per cent usage in major cities. Proton has signed an agreement to establish an EV assembly plant there. Nordin said discussions also covered potential cooperation in Islamic banking, fintech, and education, particularly student exchanges and English-medium programmes at Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS). 'ACCI Sabah will help facilitate business connections and follow-up visits between the two regions,' he said, adding that coordination from agencies such as Malaysia External Trade Development Corporation (Matrade), Ministry of Investment, Trade and Industry (Miti), Tourism Sabah, Malaysian Investment Development Authority (Mida) and private sector players would be vital. TNB facing RM5 billion tax bill after Federal Court ruling

PETALING JAYA: National utility company Tenaga Nasional Bhd is facing a RM5.05 billion tax bill following a Federal Court rulIng that it is not eligible to claim reinvestment allowance. Citing TNB's 2024 annual report, The Edge reported today that the Inland Revenue Board (LHDN) issued the company RM9.25 billion in additional tax assessments. 'TNB paid RM1.76 billion in December 2020, leaving an estimated RM5.05 billion still outstanding,' the report by the financial portal added. Yesterday, it was reported that TNB's shares plunged a day after the Federal Court overturned a ruling in the largest corporate tax dispute in the country's history, resulting in losses of over RM3 billion in its market capitalisation. Its shares fell as much as 74 sen, or over 5%, to its lowest level since June 3, with the counter closing at RM14.02. On Wednesday the apex court overturned a Court of Appeal ruling that found the national utility company to be in the business of manufacturing electricity. It said TNB should actually have been considered a utility company under Schedule 7B of the Income Tax Act 1967 (ITA). The dispute arose when LHDN disallowed TNB's claim under Schedule 7A of the ITA on the basis that the generation, distribution and transmission of electricity did not constitute manufacturing of electricity. TNB had also argued that it was only a service provider. In 2022, the High Court allowed TNB's judicial review application to set aside LHDN's RM1.8 billion tax assessment for the year 2018. Two years later, the Court of Appeal upheld the High Court's ruling. MN Holdings wins RM29mil TNB contract for Johor substation project
KUALA LUMPUR: MN Holdings Bhd's unit, MN Power Transmission Sdn Bhd, has secured a RM29.3 million contract from Tenaga Nasional Bhd (TNB) for a substation expansion project in Johor. In a filing with Bursa Malaysia, the company said it received the letter of award from TNB yesterday for the extension of two new 132-kilovolt transformer bays at the existing main intake substation in the Tanjung Langsat Industrial Estate. The project involves supplying, installing and commissioning the high-voltage transformer units using air-insulated switchgear technology, together with all associated civil works and secondary electrical systems. The contract, which excludes Sales and Service Tax, is scheduled to be completed within 540 days from the commencement date. MN Power Transmission is also required to furnish a performance security of RM1.47 million, equivalent to five per cent of the contract value, within 56 days of the award. Additionally, the company must procure all necessary insurance coverage, including construction all-risks, workmen's compensation, public liability and other relevant policies. "This project award reflects MN's ongoing capability and expertise in delivering power infrastructure solutions," the company said, adding that the contract is expected to contribute positively to the group's future earnings and net assets.
