ToU scheme offers smarter energy management for consumers
DOMESTIC and non-domestic low-voltage consumers using smart meters now have the opportunity to benefit from the Time of Use (ToU) scheme, aimed at helping them manage daily energy consumption more efficiently. According to the official myTNB website, the ToU scheme—also available to customers with Current Transformer (CT) Operated Meters or Remote Meter Reading (RMR) systems—offers greater flexibility for users to manage their energy usage according to their individual needs. 'With the option to schedule electricity usage during cheaper off-peak hours, consumers can now proactively reduce their monthly bills without compromising comfort,' said Tenaga Nasional Berhad (TNB) on its official website. The initiative is part of the Energy Commission's (ST) recent announcement of a new electricity tariff structure that allows consumers to shift their usage to more affordable off-peak periods. The ToU scheme has been revised and expanded to include longer off-peak periods—the entire day on Saturdays and Sundays, as well as from 10 pm to 2 pm the following day on weekdays (Monday to Friday). Peak hours are from 2 pm to 10 pm on weekdays. For instance, consumers who shift the use of household appliances such as washing machines, air conditioners, or electric vehicle (EV) chargers to off-peak hours may enjoy savings on their electricity bills. 'The off-peak energy charge for monthly usage of 1,500 kilowatt hours (kWh) and below is set at 24.43 sen/kWh. 'Meanwhile, the peak energy charge for the same monthly usage is 28.52 sen/kWh for ToU consumers, compared to 27.03 sen/kWh for general domestic consumers,' the website explained. To help users better understand potential savings, TNB has introduced an online Electricity Bill Calculator on the myTNB portal. Consumers can select their preferred tariff and estimate their bill before deciding to switch to the ToU scheme. Applications to switch to the ToU scheme can be submitted starting July 1, 2025 by emailing the completed application form and required documents to [email protected], or by visiting the nearest Kedai Tenaga. Government committed to ease housing burden of low-income families

Kota Kinabalu: The Sabah State Government has reaffirmed its commitment to ensuring access to affordable housing through continued support for the Rumah Mesra Rakyat (RMR) programme by Syarikat Perumahan Negara Berhad (SPNB). Kapayan Assemblywoman Jannie Lasimbang said initiatives like RMR are vital in helping low-income families who already own land but cannot afford to build a home on their own. Advertisement 'These houses are worth RM85,000, but with SPNB's RM20,000 subsidy, families only need to repay around RM300 a month. That makes it very affordable, especially for young families,' she said during a press conference after officiating the RMR 2025 handover ceremony at Kg Kapayan here, on Monday. This of the programme saw ten recipients from across Penampang, which are five receiving house keys and five others issued offer letters for homes scheduled to be built later this year. 'All ten recipients today are young people. Many of them dream of owning a house, but land and housing prices in places like Kapayan are extremely high. 'One family told me they wouldn't have been able to afford building a home on their own. You could see how happy they were and we were happy for them too,' Jannie said. Jannie noted that most recipients were building on inherited family land, which eased land acquisition costs but not construction. She said the State Government continues to prioritise housing, infrastructure and social well-being through its annual budget planning. 'Housing remains a major concern, especially with older, unsafe homes still found in urban areas. That's why programmes like RMR are necessary. 'We don't just make policies. We deliver them where they matter,' she said. She also encouraged landowners to apply for the RMR scheme, citing the long waiting lists under federal programmes such as PPR. 'If you have land and some savings, apply through SPNB. It's a real opportunity,' she said. Currently, more than 2,568 RMR units have been built in Sabah, contributing to a national total of 71,847 units delivered under the programme. 'This isn't just about building houses. New homes for Ranau families RANAU: Four recipients of the Rumah Mesra Rakyat (RMR) breathed a sigh of relief after they received the keys to their new houses here on Sunday. The four were Dunisa Junisah binti Garaim, Boby @ Mohd Azuan bin Saidi, Shamsani bin Amilin and Alfrendy Liong. 'We understand that in today's world, the cost of living is increasing, the price of construction materials has also increase. However, the Government's commitment to protecting the common people has never wavered. 'At the Ministry of Finance level, we will continue to ensure that all allocations for the development of the people, including housing, basic amenities and social wellbeing, will continue to be given priority in the State's financial planning,' he said.
