Nick Ahmed has announced his retirement from baseball after 15 seasons in the big leagues.
"For as long as I can remember, all I ever wanted to do was play baseball," Ahmed wrote in a statement he posted on X. "I got to live out my childhood dream and play baseball for a very long time! After 15 professional seasons and over a decade in the big leagues, I am officially hanging up my spikes and retiring from playing baseball."
Ahmed was drafted by the Atlanta Braves in 2011, but was traded to the Arizona Diamondbacks in 2013 as part of the deal that sent Justin Upton and Chris Johnson to the Braves. Ahmed made his debut with the Diamondbacks in 2014.

LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA - AUGUST 10: Nick Ahmed #12 of the Los Angeles Dodgers looks on against the Pittsburgh Pirates at Dodger Stadium on August 10, 2024 in Los Angeles, California. He spent 10 seasons with the team and won Gold Glove Awards in 2018 and 2019. However, in 2023, he was released in September. The Diamondbacks went to the World Series that season, but Ahmed turned down the National League Championship ring offered by the team.
The following season, he joined the San Francisco Giants before being released. The Los Angeles Dodgers signed him, but also released him. He finished the season with the San Diego Padres.
This season, he signed a minor league contract with the Texas Rangers. He appeared in five games, but was designated for assignment in May and eventually elected free agency.
Playing 15 seasons in the big leagues is no easy feat. Ahmed thanked all of his former organizations in his statement, but he will likely be remembered as a Diamondback.
His defense was his biggest asset. He finished his career with 72 home runs and a .233/.286/.370 slash line.

Crochet shakes off Ohtani's leadoff homer and outpitches Kershaw as Red Sox top Dodgers 4-2

BOSTON (AP) — Garrett Crochet struck out 10 in six innings, Jarren Duran hit a two-run triple and the Boston Red Sox beat Clayton Kershaw and the Los Angeles Dodgers 4-2 on Saturday night. Boston rookie Roman Anthony added an RBI double off Kershaw as the Red Sox won for the third time in eight games since the All-Star break. Boston won 10 in a row heading into the break. Crochet gave up two solo homers in the first. Shohei Ohtani went deep on the third pitch of the game for his 38th of the season, a day after his streak of five straight games with a home run was stopped. One batter later, Teoscar Hernández launched one over the Green Monster. Crochet (12-4) quickly recovered, however, and allowed two runs or fewer for the 18th time in 22 starts this season. Aroldis Chapman got three outs for his 18th save, striking out pinch-hitter and former Red Sox star Mookie Betts to end it. Making his first regular-season start at Fenway Park, Kershaw (4-2) gave up four runs and six hits in 4 2/3 innings with two strikeouts. The three-time Cy Young Award winner's only previous start in Boston came when the Red Sox beat the Dodgers in Game 1 of the 2018 World Series on the way to winning the title. With the Red Sox trailing 2-0 in the second, Duran drove a pitch over center fielder Andy Pages' head to the wall for a two-run triple and then scored on Abraham Toro's sacrifice fly. Key stat Duran had his first career game with two triples. The previous Red Sox player to do that was Betts during his 2018 AL MVP season. Up next ___

Heaney, 5 Pirates relievers combine on 4-hitter, Cruz homers in 2-0 win over Diamondbacks

PITTSBURGH (AP) — Andrew Heaney and five relievers combined on a four-hitter, Oneil Cruz hit his team-leading 17th home run and the Pittsburgh Pirates beat the Arizona Diamondbacks 2-0 on Saturday night. Heaney (5-9) pitched five innings and allowed two hits with four strikeouts and no walks. It might have been his last start for the last-place Pirates, with Heaney on an expiring contract and the trade deadline Thursday. David Bednar worked a perfect ninth inning for his 100th career save and 16th this season. Merrill Kelly (9-6) might have pitched his last game for the Diamondbacks, too, as he can become a free agent at the end of the season. Kelly gave up two runs — one earned — and six hits in 6 2/3 innings, striking out three and walking one. Cruz's two-run homer in the second inning carried 410 feet to right-center field and accounted for all the scoring. It came after Tommy Pham reached base on third baseman Eugenio Suarez's fielding error. Suarez, who has 36 home runs, has topped trade speculation. The Diamondbacks pulled outfielder Randal Grichuk in the fifth inning and traded him to Kansas City for reliever Andrew Hoffman. The move came two days after the Diamondbacks shipped first baseman Josh Naylor to Seattle for two pitching prospects. The Diamondbacks were 10 games behind the first-place Los Angeles Dodgers in the NL West entering play Saturday. They also were four games out of the third wild card position. The Pirates won for the fourth time in five games and the Diamondbacks lost for the fourth time in five games. Diamondbacks center fielder Alek Thomas missed his third game while on the bereavement list, but it expected to play Sunday. Key moment The Diamondbacks had runners on first and second with two outs in the sixth inning, but Yohan Ramirez struck out Jorge Barrosa, who replaced Grichuk, to end the threat. Up next Pirates RHP Paul Skenes (5-8, 1.91) was set to face RHP Zac Gallen (7-11, 5.58 ERA) on Sunday in the series finale. ___
