Janelle James Looks Back on Not Getting Role on Netflix's ‘GLOW' After She 'Nailed' Audition

Janelle James is looking back on a role that got away.
While appearing in Kelly Ripa's Let's Talk Off Camera podcast, the Abbott Elementary star was asked if she's able to watch projects she auditioned for but didn't get. James then reflected on the one role she 'really wanted.'

'I haven't thought about this in awhile. Another thing I was excited about that I auditioned for once was GLOW. Do you remember that? The female wrestling,' James said. 'I really wanted that role.'
She continued, 'It was for one of the female wrestlers, and we had to make up an '80s rap and perform it in the audition, and also do a fight scene with ourselves. I did this rap and then I did a round kick. And I remember leaving that audition like, 'Nailed it.' And did not get that role.'
Thus far James said she hasn't 'watched one second of that show.'
'I'm so salty,' she added before offering that perhaps she would watch it that day after the interview.
In 2020, Netflix reversed its fourth-season renewal decision on GLOW, citing COVID-19 issues as the reason they would not go forward with the series' final installment.
GLOW had started production on season four at the time. It completed one episode and started a second before the coronavirus pandemic led to production shutdowns for it and other series and films.
The series earned 18 Emmy nominations and three wins over the course of its three-season run. The show, created by Liz Flahive and Carly Mensch, was a fictionalized telling of the real-life women's professional wrestling program called Gorgeous Ladies of Wrestling that launched in the 1980s.

Essence Fest 2025 Releases Statement Following Lauryn Hill Backlash

Essence has stepped in to make it crystal clear that no slander against Ms. Lauryn Hill will be tolerated following her perceived 'late' performance at Essence Fest 2025. In an Instagram post in response to backlash, the festival issued a loving and firm statement backing the star. 'Family is family and around here we protect our own no matter what the PEOPLE have to say. Let's be very clear — WE don't play about Ms. Lauryn Hill,' it reads. 'Not for clicks. Not for headlines. She arrived on schedule, stepped on that stage, and delivered the kind of performance only a legend can. The delay? Not hers. We will take that. The moment? One for the books. The legacy? Still unmatched.' The publication closed the message with this powerful reminder: 'Put some respect on her name. Keep the takes, but keep her out of them. All love and deep profound admiration for Ms. Lauryn Hill. #ESSENCEFest25.' According to attendees, the eight-time Grammy-winning artist didn't hit the stage at the Caesars Superdome in New Orleans until 2:30 A.M on Saturday morning (July 5), hours after many festival-goers had already called it a night. By the time she launched into her set, only a few hundred people remained in the 'nearly empty' venue — which holds over 80,000. However, she still gave an unforgettable show. The evening ran off-schedule from the start, according to with act after act finishing nearly an hour late. Hill, for her part, didn't just slip in fashionably late; she was added to an already stacked lineup that included Jill Scott, Davido, Donnell Jones, Moliy, and Buju Banton. So while TikTok might be filled with videos of empty seats, it's also full of clips capturing Hill's soulful performance for the dedicated fans who stuck it out. And for those who did wait, it was well worth it. Hill took time to connect with the intimate crowd, accepted a few song requests, and even brought out her sons — Zion Marley and Joshua 'YG' Marley — for a touching family moment. She wrapped her set around 3:30 A.M., according to The Hollywood Reporter, after performing beloved tracks like 'Zion' and 'Tell Him.' Her son YG Marley even blessed the mic with a live rendition of his viral hit, 'Praise Jah In The Moonlight.' 'It was a PHENOMENAL set! I am happy and thankful that I stayed. Still feeling inspired!!!' one fan commented on the event as another defended Hill against the criticism. 'She was NOT late, the entire show started late & she didn't get to start at her scheduled time because there were two acts before her still going when she should have been on the stage,' they wrote on Instagram. They added, 'That woman does not deserve this negative narrative as if 'she did something wrong' or like her fans don't support her. It was late & people were just tired. Give her a break.' Someone else chimed in, 'I woulda been there up at 4am enjoying her set.' See ESSENCE's official statement regarding Lauryn Hill's performance above. Lauryn Hill Performs For Nearly Empty Superdome At Essence Fest Hours After Scheduled Set

Lauryn Hill is no stranger to running on her own time, but her latest 'late' performance at the 2025 Essence Festival was reportedly not her fault, and under circumstances out of her control. According to attendees, Hill didn't hit the stage at the Caesars Superdome in New Orleans until 2:30 a.m. Saturday morning (July 5) — well after most fans had called it a night. By the time she launched into her set, only a few hundred people remained in the 'nearly empty' venue that holds more than 80,000. According to the evening ran off-schedule from the start, with multiple acts finishing almost an hour behind. And to be fair, the eight-time Grammy winner wasn't just fashionably late — she was added to an already jam-packed lineup that included performances by Jill Scott, Davido, Donnell Jones, Moliy, and Buju Banton. For the fans who stayed, Ms. Hill made it count. She spoke to the intimate crowd, took a song request or two, and even brought her sons, Zion Marley and Joshua 'YG' Marley, on stage for a family moment. Her set ended around 3:30 a.m., per The Hollywood Reporter. Videos of the nearly empty stadium have been circulating on TikTok, but so have clips of her giving a heartfelt performance despite the sparse audience. Hill performed beloved hits including, 'Tell Him' and 'Zion,' as her son gave the crowd a live rendition of his viral song, 'Praise Jah In The Moonlight.' Some fans took to social media to defend her, arguing that the scheduling mess wasn't her fault and praising her for still showing up with grace. 'It was a PHENOMENAL set! I am happy and thankful that I stayed. Still feeling inspired!!!' one person commented on Instagram as another said, 'This is honestly messed up that anyone is sharing information like this. She was NOT late, the entire show started late & she didn't get to start at her scheduled time because there were two acts before her still going when she should have been on the stage.' They added, 'I was there & saw the whole thing from Glorilla to Lauryn. That woman does not deserve this negative narrative as if 'she did something wrong' or like her fans don't support her. It was late & people were just tired. Give her a break.' A third person added, 'And this my song too!! I woulda been there up at 4am enjoying her set.' See footage of Lauryn Hill performing above. Charlize Theron blasts studios for not taking risks on female-led action films: 'Guys will get a free ride'

Charlize Theron is calling out a Hollywood double standard. While celebrating the release of her action-centric superhero sequel The Old Guard 2, the Oscar-winner opened up about the gender disparity that still plagues the genre, arguing that it is often "harder" to get studios onboard with a female-led action movie. "Action films with female leads don't get green lit as much as the ones with male leads," she recently told The New York Times. "I think the thing that always frustrates me is the fact that guys will get a free ride." Theron added that it doesn't matter whether or not the male-lead is a bankable star — but for women, having an action movie flop can make a damaging difference. "When women do this and the movie maybe doesn't hit fully, they don't necessarily get a chance again," she said. "With this, we were very aware that eyes were on us. It's not a risk that studios want to take, but they'll take it many times on the same guy who might have a string of action movies that did not do so well." The actress' latest outing in The Old Guard 2, marks a much-anticipated sequel to the 2020 Netflix hit about a group of immortal mercenaries. An action movie veteran with an impressive resumé, Theron has also kicked ass in films from Atomic Blonde to Æon Flux, while speeding through danger in Mad Max: Fury Road and multiple Fast & Furious movies. Asked what attracts her to the exhilarating genre, the actress had a surprising answer: she pointed to her background in ballet. "I love dance, but I would never have been able to go back and be a dancer again," she explained. "Action movies gave me this opportunity to be physical again, to be a storyteller with my body." But Theron's commitment to the action genre doesn't come without a toll. The actress has endured her share of injuries over the years, sharing that she is unfortunately "accident-prone" on set, which has meant getting several surgeries over the years. "I run into people and they're like, 'Oh, what happened to your arm?' And I'm like, 'Oh, I just had surgery.' And they're like, 'The last time I saw you, you had surgery!'" Theron said. "I had an unfortunate injury on the first action attempt I ever did, for a bad movie called Æon Flux. On day nine, I did a back handspring, and I didn't get enough height, and I landed on my neck on a concrete bridge." She continued, "I had the last surgery on my neck 18 years ago. I've had surgery on both elbows, my right shoulder, my thumb, carpal tunnel, and fractures. A lot of fractures."Lucky for audiences, none of those injuries have been enough to keep Theron away from the genre for very long. In fact, the actress has already booked her next action-packed gig: Baltasar Kormákur's Apex, a thriller that stars Theron as an adrenaline junkie who sets out to conquer a menacing river, only to discover that she's being hunted by a dangerous predator. Taron Egerton and Eric Bana are also set to star. Read the original article on Entertainment Weekly
