After protests, Kerala lawmakers meet arrested nuns in jail
Permission was first denied to the delegation while the Kerala BJP General Secretary Anoop Antony was given permission without any problems.
It was only after the intervention of former Chhattisgarh Chief Minister and veteran Congress leader Bhupesh Baghel that the AICC delegation got the permission to meet the two nuns.
On Tuesday, a lower court in Chhattisgarh rejected the bail plea of the two nuns and the church is now approaching a Sessions Court on Wednesday.
The nuns, Preeti Mary and Vandana Francis, posted with the Assisi Sisters of Mary Immaculate, a congregation under the Syro-Malabar Church in Alappuzha district, were working at a hospital in Agra.
On August 26, the two nuns and the man, identified as Sukhman Mandavi, were accompanying three women from Chhattisgarh's Narayanpur district to Uttar Pradesh's Agra, where they had been offered jobs as kitchen helpers at a Convent.
While they were waiting at the Chhattisgarh railway station, they were stopped by Bajrang Dal activists, and the police also arrived at the spot.
Both the nuns and the man were taken into custody and later produced before a local court, which sent them to judicial custody.
The lawmakers included Lok Sabha members Benny Behanan (Congress), N.K. Premachandran (Revolutionary Socialist Party), Francis George (Kerala Congress) and Saptagiri S. Ulaka (Congress) and Roji M. John (Congress).
The brother of the arrested nun Preeti was also in the delegation.
Speaking to the media soon after meeting the two distraught nuns, RSP legislator Premachandran said that they are rattled by what happened to them and continue to be in a state of shock.
"It's now crystal clear that the two sisters had no malafide intentions. They are residing in two different places and they met at the railway station in Chhattisgarh. It was at the railway station that angry Bajarang Dal activists started abusing them," he added.
"These Bajrang Dal activists searched the bags of the sisters and also the three women. A sum of Rs 2,000 was recovered from one woman and the Bajrang Dal activists was angrily asking if the money was given by the nuns," Premachandran said.
Congress legislator Behanan said that all the narratives that were floated at the time of arrest of the nuns has fallen flat.
"First they said the three young women are minors, which was proved false as they had their identity cards and also their Aadhar card. Then it was said the women was forcefully taken away, which has been denied by their parents," he added.
Biju, brother of Sister Preeti, said that he came all the way from Kerala just to see her and report to our aged parents that I met her.
"It was a really emotional meeting and we both broke into tears," Biju said, and added now we feel a bit relieved as we are now seeing to seek bail.
What has upset the AICC delegation was despite they being lawmakers they did not get any desired respect, while a BJP leader from Kerala Anoop Antony was given the permission.
"We will submit a report to the AICC on the pitiful condition of the two nuns who never did any wrong and we will again raise this issue in the Parliament on Wednesday," Behanan added.
Earlier on Tuesday, as a face saving measure Kerala BJP President Rajeev Chandrasekhar cleared the air about the arrest by saying there was a miscommunication.
"It's now clear that neither trafficking nor religious conversion has taken place. There was a miscommunication in the incident. We, the BJP, will stand with the nuns till they get justice. If required I myself will reach Chhattisgarh. I have had contacts with the Home Minister there," Chandrasekhar told the media in Delhi.
On Wednesday, various churches in Kerala are holding a protest in the way how the constitutional rights of the nuns was violated and they were put in jail.

BJP members stage a protest in Belagavi on Wednesday against the State government's failure to ensure proper urea supply to farmers. Party leaders said that there has been a large-scale diversion of urea to the black market and that some Ministers and leaders of the ruling party are behind this. The protestors rode bullock carts and tractors from Rani Chennamma Circle to the Deputy Commissioner's office. He said that the demand for urea has been low in the last few years due to a rainfall deficit of 30%-40%. But, this year, the rainfall has been good and urea demand has naturally risen. Farming activities have picked up pace. But the State government has failed to ensure proper availability of urea. The State government is blind to the fact that urea is being diverted and sold in black. I have information that Ministers are not just oblivious to this but also are actively involved in this malpractice,' he said. He said that the quality of seeds distributed to farmers through the Agriculture Department has remained poor in the last two years. 'This has caused huge losses to farmers whose demand for compensation has not been fulfilled. Spurious seed and fertiliser companies have mushroomed in the State. Their only aim is to bleed the farmers dry. Agriculture Minister N. Chaluvarayaswamy does not understand a thing about agriculture. He was supposed to visit various districts to check the crop and sowing pattern but has limited himself to Bengaluru and his native district of Mandya,' he said. 'Farmers have been facing injustice ever since the Congress came to power in the State. It has suspended various schemes like the Raitha Vidyanidhi Yojana, subsidy for agricultural equipment and support price for millet cultivation and others. The State government is not giving its share to the Pradhan Mantri Kisan Samman Yojana,' he said. He said that the Union government has provided the required quantity of urea fertiliser to the State during the monsoon season. 'However, more than 2 lakh tonnes of fertiliser is being sold in black. Due to this, farmers are struggling to maintain their crops,' he said. 'Farmers are facing shortage of urea fertiliser during this monsoon season. The State requires 12.88 lakh tonnes of urea during the monsoon season. Out of this, the Centre has allocated 11.73 lakh tonnes based on available stock. Already, 8.73 lakh tonnes have been supplied. But only 5.27 lakh tonnes have reached farmers. The rest has gone to black marketeers,' he said. The former MLAs Sanjay Patil, V.I. Patil, Mahantesh Doddagoudar, party's rural district unit president Subhash Patil, city unit president Geeta Sutar, leaders M.B. Zirali, Murughendragouda Patil, Mahantesh Vakkund and others were present.

External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar asserted Wednesday that there was no third-party intervention in ensuring a ceasefire between India and Pakistan during Operation Sindoor, making it clear that it was not linked to trade as claimed by US President Donald Trump. Intervening in the special discussion on Operation Sindoor and Pahalgam terror attack in the Rajya Sabha, Jaishankar castigated the Congress over its governments' apathetic response to the incidents of Pakistan-sponsored terrorism. During his hour-long speech, he referred to the previous Congress-led UPA government's 'inaction' in the wake of the 26/11 Mumbai terror attack, saying 'there is a Congress normal… and a Modi normal'. 'There is a Congress normal, which I spoke about, and there is a (Narendra) Modi normal… The Modi normal is terrorists are not proxies. Number two, cross-border terrorism will get an appropriate response in our way, at our time. Three, talks and terror will not go together. If there are talks, it will only be about terror. Number four, we will not give in to nuclear blackmail. And number five, terrorism and good neighbourliness cannot go together,' he said. The Opposition MPs kept their guns trained on the government, asking it to come clean on President Trump's claims of brokering a ceasefire between India and Pakistan. Apart from Jaishankar, Leader of the House J P Nadda, the BJP president, also slammed the Congress for its 'appeasement' of Pakistan. Taking on the Opposition, Jaishankar said, 'Kaan khol ke sun lein (listen carefully), April 22 se June 16 tak ek bhi phone call President (Donald) Trump and Prime Minister (Narendra) Modi ke beech mein nahi huyi PM Modi and President Trump did not have any phone calls between April 22, when the Pahalgam attack took place, and June 16,' he said. He appealed for a full-fledged statehood for Jammu and Kashmir, and proposed the adoption of a resolution condemning President Trump for claiming credit for the ceasefire. 'Come clean, we are with you Prime Minister…I propose a resolution that 'This House unilaterally condemns the repeated statements of American President Donald Trump,' he said. CPI(M) MP John Brittas said that under the Modi government a new normal meant the 'celebration of failure'. 'Pulwama would be the biggest intelligence and security failure in the history of Independent India. There was deliberate, criminal negligence and you mixed it with hubris,' he said. Brittas recalled the resignations of then Union home minister Shivraj Patil following the 26/11 Mumbai terror attack and questioned the Modi government over its accountability over the Pahalgam attack. 'They depicted Amit Shah as the second Sardar Patel. Will history judge Shah as morally inferior to Shivraj Patil?' he asked.

Congress to approach high court against PM Modi for 2020 violation of Model Code of Conduct
Former Maharashtra Chief Minister and senior Congress leader Prithviraj Chavan on Wednesday alleged that Prime Minister Narendra Modi violated the Model Code of Conduct in 2020 and that despite a lodging a complaint, the Election Commission has been evasive in taking action on the complaint. Chavan said that he would approach the High Court regarding the matter. 'When strict action was taken against former PM Indira Gandhi and Shiv Sena chief Balasaheb Thackeray, why is Narendra Modi being spared? No one is above the law,' said Chavan. Chavan elaborated that on December 28, 2020, during the gram panchayat elections in Maharashtra and the Assembly elections in West Bengal, Prime Minister Modi, along with the then Railway and Agriculture Ministers, flagged off the 100th Kisan Rail from Sangola (Solapur district) to Shalimar (West Bengal). 'The event was broadcast nationwide on TV, and no prior permission had been taken from the Election Commission or the district administration. Prafull Kadam, a Congress worker, a complaint, but the commission initially delayed taking action. Eventually, it acknowledged the violation but only cautioned the Railway Administration, sparing Modi. This was a clear breach of the law, where the authorities shielded Modi,' said Chavan. The Congress leader said Kadam had submitted detailed evidence of the violation in accordance with all rules and laws. 'He contended that the event was an attempt to influence voters and a blatant breach of the Model Code of Conduct, demanding that Modi's Lok Sabha membership be revoked,' the Congress leader said. The Maharashtra Congress has inducted 66 per cent new faces. The committee includes 41 per cent OBC members, 19 per cent SC/ST members, and 33 women. The team has been formed with a focus on geographic and social balance, said Maharashtra Congress president Harshvardhan Sapkal.
