Barnama27-05-2025
At 9.15 am, the FTSE Bursa Malaysia KLCI (FBM KLCI) fell 1.59 points to 1,532.71 from Monday's close of 1,534.30.
KUALA LUMPUR, May 27 (Bernama) -- Bursa Malaysia traded easier during early morning trade, dampened by a lack of market-moving news as traders awaited more clarity from the Trump administration on tariffs, analysts said.
In the broader market, gainers led decliners 171 to 146, with 257 counters unchanged, 1,821 untraded and 17 suspended.
It noted that Wall Street was closed on Monday in conjunction with Memorial Day, but the US equity futures advanced as investors reacted positively to President Trump's tariff deadline extension on the European Union.
'Besides, given rising geopolitical tension, and amid uncertainty surrounding the Trump administration's stance on tariff, we expect the market to adopt a defensive stance, and the momentum in real estate investment trusts may persist,' it said.
Malacca Securities Sdn Bhd in a note today said the market may face further weakness amid continued foreign fund outflows.
Meanwhile, Rakuten Trade Sdn Bhd equity research vice-president Thong Pak Leng said traders were also concerned that a prolonged price war amongst the electric vehicles players to clear inventory will see extended margin compression.
Back home, the FBM KLCI closed marginally lower on Monday as foreign selling is suspected to remain prevalent.
'These short term trades by foreign funds would certainly lengthen the consolidation of the benchmark index. For today, we expect the index to trend between the 1,535-1545 range,' he told Bernama.
Among heavyweight stocks, Maybank fell four sen to RM9.88, while Public Bank dropped three sen to RM4.38, Tenaga and IHH Healthcare slid two sen each to RM13.98 and RM6.89 respectively, and CIMB shed one sen to RM6.95.
Among active stocks, NexG bagged one sen to 37.5 sen, MYEG gained 1.5 sen to 91 sen, OCR Group and Velesto were flat at RM3.5 sen and 17 sen respectively, while Armada eased one sen to 47.5 sen.
On the index board, the FBM Emas Index lost 5.55 points to 11,450.14, the FBMT 100 Index fell 6.59 points to 11,212.12, and the FBM ACE Index was down 8.20 points to 4,589.87.
The FBM Emas Shariah Index increased 0.14 of a point to 11,390.13, and the FBM 70 Index added 10.58 points to 16,313.94.

Philippines' Marcos to meet Trump, hoping to secure trade deal that is favourable to both allied countries

Philippine President Ferdinand Marcos Jr will be the first South-East Asian leader to meet US President Donald Trump in his second term. -- Reuters WASHINGTON/MANILA (Reuters): Philippine President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. meets US President Donald Trump this week, hoping Manila's status as a key Asian ally will secure a more favorable trade deal before an August 1 deadline. Marcos will be the first South-East Asian leader to meet Trump in his second term. Trump has already struck trade deals with two of Manila's regional partners, Vietnam and Indonesia, driving tough bargains in trade talks even with close allies that Washington needs to keep onside in its strategic rivalry with China. "I expect our discussions to focus on security and defense, of course, but also on trade," Marcos said in a speech before leaving Manila. "We will see how much progress we can make when it comes to the negotiations with the United States concerning the changes that we would like to institute to alleviate the effects of a very severe tariff schedule on the Philippines." The United States had a deficit of nearly $5 billion with the Philippines last year on bilateral goods trade of US$23.5 billion. Trump this month raised the threatened "reciprocal" tariffs on imports from the Philippines to 20% from 17% threatened in April. Although U.S. allies in Asia such as Japan and South Korea have yet to strike trade deals with Trump, Gregory Poling, a Southeast Asia expert at Washington's Center for Strategic and International Studies, said Marcos might be able to do better than Vietnam, with its agreement of a 20% baseline tariff on its goods, and Indonesia at 19%. "I wouldn't be surprised to see an announcement of a deal with the Philippines at a lower rate than those two," Poling said. Marcos, who arrived in Washington on Sunday, is due to hold talks with Secretary of State Marco Rubio and Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth on Monday before meeting Trump at the White House on Tuesday. He will also meet U.S. business leaders investing in the Philippines during his trip. 'MUTUALLY BENEFICIAL' DEAL Philippine officials say Marcos' focus will be on economic cooperation and Manila's concerns about the tariffs. They say he will stress that Manila must become economically stronger if it is to serve as a truly robust partner for the U.S. in the Indo-Pacific. Philippine Assistant Foreign Secretary Raquel Solano said last week trade officials have been working with U.S. counterparts seeking to seal a "mutually acceptable and mutually beneficial" deal for both countries. Trump and Marcos will also discuss defense and security, and Solano said the Philippine president would be looking to further strengthen the longstanding defense alliance. With the Philippines facing intense pressure from China in the contested South China Sea, Marcos has pivoted closer to the U.S., expanding its access to Philippine military bases amid China's threats towards Taiwan, the democratically governed island claimed by Beijing. The United States and the Philippines have a seven-decade-old mutual defense treaty and hold dozens of annual exercises, which have included training with U.S. Typhon missile system, and more recently with the NMESIS anti-ship missile system, angering China. Manila and the U.S. have closely aligned their views on China, Poling said, and it is notable that Rubio and Hegseth made sure their Philippine counterparts were the first Southeast Asian officials they met. Poling said Trump also seemed to have a certain warmth towards Marcos, based on their phone call after the election. Sarawak unity drives sustainable growth towards 2030 vision

KUCHING: The unity of Sarawak's diverse communities remains the cornerstone of the state's progress as it advances towards becoming a high-income and developed region by 2030, said Premier Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg. Marking Sarawak Day 2025 under the theme 'Sarawak Maju Makmur' (Progressive and Prosperous Sarawak), he emphasised the state's commitment to inclusive growth through the Post-COVID-19 Development Strategy (PCDS) 2030. 'The Sarawak government will continue implementing PCDS 2030 to ensure socio-economic prosperity for all,' he stated in a Facebook post by the Office of the Premier. The Premier also outlined key focus areas, including digital economy expansion, AI adoption, and sustainable environmental practices. Sectors like oil and gas, plantations, tourism, and modern agriculture will receive accelerated development to bolster economic resilience. Education remains a priority, with free higher education in selected fields at state-owned universities starting next year. 'This initiative allows students to focus on their studies while easing financial burdens on families,' he added. Abang Johari reaffirmed Sarawak's dedication to safeguarding its rights under the Malaysia Agreement 1963 (MA63) and thanked organisers for ensuring a successful Sarawak Day celebration in Miri. 'May Sarawak continue to prosper and serve as Malaysia's harmony model,' he concluded. – Bernama

Pahang Gov't Aims To Expand Employment Opportunities, Attract More Investments

TEMERLOH, July 21 (Bernama) -- The Pahang government is committed to expanding the people's employment opportunities by attracting more investments to the state. Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Wan Rosdy Wan Ismail said they also welcome those born in Pahang but currently work elsewhere to return to work in the state, in line with the increasing investment received by Pahang. "We want to provide plenty of job opportunities so that they can return (to work) in Pahang. "I was told that those working elsewhere are willing to return to Pahang if there is an opportunity and if there are better offers,' he told a media conference after the Pahang state-level Asyura Carnival 1447 Hijrah at Surau Kampung Paya Laman, Lanchang here. The carnival, organised by the Pahang Islamic Religious Affairs Department (JAIP) in collaboration with other agencies, saw 33 teams taking part in the bubur asyura (asyura porridge) cooking competition to instil the spirit of gotong-royong as well as cultivate the culture of giving and sharing sustenance among the community. At the same time, the 46 haj pilgrims who received their offer letter late this year were presented with the Makmur Pahang Initiative in the form of RM760 cash each under the Baraqah Haji Pahang Programme. In addition, Wan Rosly said the state government has consistently expressed high commitment in efforts to increase the Gross Domestic Product (GDP) and investment value in Pahang, which has reached RM4 billion as of June. Asked about the extraordinary appreciation to be announced by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim either tomorrow or Wednesday, Wan Rosdy hopes the good news will be enjoyed by people in all states, including Pahang. "The Prime Minister has said it will be a good announcement, so let's wait. I don't know either, no one knows,' he said.
