Public urged to use Bas.My for subsidised bus service continuity
ALOR SETAR: The Ministry of Transport is urging the public to utilise the stage bus service to ensure its long-term sustainability. Introduced under the Stage Bus Service Transformation (SBST) programme, the service is being rolled out in phases this year with significant government funding. Transport Minister Anthony Loke stressed the need for strong ridership to justify continued financial support. 'To convince the Finance Ministry to keep funding this, I need data proving its benefits. If people don't use it despite affordable fares, securing future allocations will be tough,' he said after launching the Kota Setar service. The federal government has allocated RM78.5 million over five years for 13 SBST routes in Kedah. Since its phased launch on June 1, the Kota Setar service has seen around 30,000 monthly users, with projections reaching 40,000 by month-end. Loke explained that higher ridership reduces per-passenger costs, making the subsidy more efficient. 'The annual cost remains RM15.7 million regardless of passenger numbers. More users mean better value for the government's investment.' On safety concerns following a recent fatal accident involving a bus, Loke clarified that investigations are ongoing. 'Police will determine if negligence occurred. All operators must comply with strict safety rules, including speed limits and driver training.' - Bernama

Cops probe ‘flogging' of Prime Minister effigy during Turun Anwar rally
Published on: Monday, July 28, 2025 Published on: Mon, Jul 28, 2025 By: FMT Reporters Text Size: Acting Kuala Lumpur police chief Usuf Jan Mohamad said the report on the incident was one of four received in relation to the rally at Dataran Merdeka. PETALING JAYA: Police are probing the reported flogging of an effigy resembling Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim near Masjid Negara during the Turun Anwar rally last Saturday. Acting Kuala Lumpur police chief Usuf Jan Mohamad said the report on the incident was one of four received in relation to the rally at Dataran Merdeka, Bernama reported. He said the case had been referred to the classified crime investigation unit in Bukit Aman for investigation under Section 41 of the Sedition Act 1948, Section 504 of the Penal Code, and Section 233 of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998. Speaking at a press conference in Kuala Lumpur today, he said the other three reports were related to the use of drones. 'The three other reports related to drones have been forwarded to the Civil Aviation Authority of Malaysia for further action,' he said, adding that any misconduct by rally participants would be investigated by the police. About 18,000 people took part in the rally, according to police estimates, although the organisers, PAS Youth, claimed that more than 200,000 participants were present. Protesters had called for Anwar to step down as prime minister over the rising cost of living, among others. At an anti-corruption rally in Sabah last month, organised by several Universiti Malaysia Sabah students, protesters burned a caricature of the prime minister. The Gempur Rasuah Sabah 2.0 protest saw more than 100 people call for action over the Sabah water department scandal. Police later said they were investigating the burning of the caricature under the Sedition Act 1948 and Penal Code. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news? SST exemption for residential projects, public facilities
Essential building materials such as cement, aggregate (gravel) and sand remain zero-rated under the sales tax to help reduce the burden on developers and ensure the continuity of infrastructure projects. 28 Jul 2025 02:39pm Companies and contractors that carry out contracts that do not allow for review will be granted a one-year exemption, subject to terms and conditions. - 123RF photo for illustration purpose only KUALA LUMPUR - The government continues to support the construction sector by granting Sales and Services Tax (SST) exemptions for selected projects, particularly those involving residential buildings and public facilities, including houses of worship, recreational parks and public toilets, said Deputy Works Minister Datuk Seri Ahmad Maslan. He said essential building materials such as cement, aggregate (gravel) and sand remain zero-rated under the sales tax to help reduce the burden on developers and ensure the continuity of infrastructure projects. "Selected business-to-business (B2B) activities are subject to certain conditions. For instance, main contractors are subject to SST, but not to subcontractors earning below the threshold of RM1.5 million,' he said during an oral question and answer session at the Dewan Rakyat today. Ahmad was responding to a question from Yusuf Abd Wahab (GPS-Tanjong Manis) regarding the categories of construction projects exempted from SST, as well as the ministry's steps to ensure that existing projects are not affected by its implementation. In line with the government's commitment to implement SST fairly and effectively, he said, companies and contractors that carry out contracts that do not allow for review will be granted a one-year exemption, subject to terms and conditions. "This incentive is part of the government's measures to ensure the construction industry has sufficient time to adjust the system, streamline the registration process and obtain accurate clarification on the implementation of SST," he said. Meanwhile, Ahmad said that there has been no discussion to increase the threshold value for registration of taxable services for the construction sector from RM1.5 million to RM3 million. He was responding to a supplementary question from Abdul Latiff Abdul Rahman (PN-Kuala Krai) regarding the industry's proposal for the threshold value for registration of SST taxable services to be increased from RM1.5 million to RM3 million, particularly for construction and rental and leasing categories. - BERNAMA More Like This
