Recognizing warning signs of mental health issues can save young lives
How do you know if your child or teen is going through a mental health crisis and what should you do if you see a problem?
University of Alabama professor Abby Horton, a certified health and life coach and instructor in the Capstone College of Nursing, says communication is an important key for a young person's mental health and to help parents see warning signs.
"If you are concerned about their health overall, their mental health, their moodiness, you're noticing patterns that have changed, then have a conversation one-to-one. You can figure that out in your family dynamic, but have that conversation, ask open-ended questions, keep them talking. You know, figure out what is the main thing that's really causing them to be stressed, or to feel hopeless or whatever the case may be," Horton said.
Horton said there are signs a child or teen is experiencing a mental health issue, but seeing those signs requires a relationship.
"I think it's really important for us to notice patterns. And so for us to do that, we really have to know the person that kid, the teen, and know that their pattern is different," Horton said.
Here are some of the signs there could be a problem.
Speech patterns change. Your kid becomes more talkative than normal or less talkative than normal.
Changes in sleep patterns. This could be from a loss of sleep or sleeping more than normal.
Unusual moodiness, sadness, or hopelessness.
Talks or hints about death and/or suicide.
Giving away belongings.
Quitting activities that they have always enjoyed.
Horton said this is not a comprehensive list and parents, friends, and teachers who know the person well can detect problems and should not be afraid of addressing them. Horton said a common myth that worries parents is if they talk to their child about suicide, it might induce them to commit suicide. Horton said having a conversation about suicide is not going to harm the child but will open a door of communication to help them.
If a parent, friend, or teacher sees the danger signs, there are steps to take to get help for the person in need. If the crisis seems severe, the first step should be to call 911 in cases where a person's life is in danger. If the situation is less dire, the following steps can get the ball rolling to get help.
Start a conversation with the child or teen. Talk to their coaches, teachers and friends.
Contact mental health professionals in the school who can put the family in touch with appropriate resources and referrals.
Contact mental health providers in the community to set up doctors visits or visits to counselors.
Call 988 the suicide and crisis lifeline.
"Once you start that conversation, once you reach out to the school, oftentimes you're going to be surrounded by a community of support where they start helping you at the school, in the community, and they help form a plan that's going to work for that child or teenager," Horton said.
"It's so important for kids and teens to have a trusted adult they can reach out to when they have a challenge, or when they're having a mental health issue, because having someone the child or teen trust can help walk them through whatever they're facing is critical," Horton said.
"Hopefully it's a parent, but it might be a teacher or a coach. It might be someone in their church or community that can have a conversation where there's a previous relationship with that child or teen, and they kind of know that teen's behavior. They know maybe things that are going on in their life and they can help really tailor advice or mentoring or coaching to that particular individual," she said.
"You know, it's so important to realize what teens need, especially teens going through difficult circumstances, is someone to be willing to show them empathy, to be able to have conversations and let them know that it's OK to not be OK. It's OK to ask for help," Horton said.

Legionnaires' disease cluster in New York City causes 2 deaths, sickens 58 people. What is it, and how do you get it?

Two people have died and 58 people have been sickened in a Legionnaires' disease cluster in central Harlem in New York City, health officials said Monday. The disease was initially detected on July 25. Since then, the New York City Department of Health has been investigating the cluster and has sampled all cooling towers within the affected area, which help regulate a building's temperature. Eleven cooling towers tested positive for the bacteria that cause Legionnaires' disease. The remediation required by the health department has been completed, according to a Monday update. The following ZIP codes and bordering communities have been affected in Harlem: 10027, 10030, 10035, 10037 and 10039. "Anyone in these ZIP codes with flu-like symptoms should contact a health care provider as soon as possible," said acting health commissioner Dr. Michelle Morse. "Legionnaires' disease can be effectively treated if diagnosed early, but New Yorkers at higher risk, like adults aged 50 and older and those who smoke or have chronic lung conditions, should be especially mindful of their symptoms and seek care as soon as symptoms begin." What is Legionnaires' disease? It's a serious type of pneumonia, a lung infection, that is caused by Legionella bacteria. People can become sick from inhaling water vapor that's contaminated with Legionella bacteria. Less commonly, a person can get sick when water contaminated with the bacteria accidentally enters the lungs by aspiration. How does it spread? In general, Legionnaires' is not transmitted from person to person. Legionella can grow and spread in human-made water systems like showerheads and sink faucets, hot tubs, decorative fountains, complex and large plumbing systems and cooling towers, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. There are also factors that make it easier for Legionella to grow and survive in water, including: Biofilm, which is slime that enables germs to grow Temperatures from 77 degrees to 113 degrees Fahrenheit Not having enough disinfectant Slow or no water movement (Read more from the CDC about how to prevent waterborne germs while away from your home.) What are the symptoms of Legionnaires' disease? Symptoms usually appear in a person within two to 14 days after they've been exposed to the bacteria, the CDC says. Symptoms can be similar to other types of pneumonia, such as: Headache Muscle aches Shortness of breath Cough Fever Other symptoms can include confusion, diarrhea or nausea. Who is at risk of getting sick? Most healthy people exposed to Legionella don't become ill, according to the CDC's website. However, the following people are at increased risk of getting sick from the bacteria: People 50 years and older Current or former smokers People with specific health issues or conditions, like cancer, chronic lung disease, diabetes, kidney failure, liver failure and a weak immune system Diagnosis and treatment A chest x-ray can confirm if a person has pneumonia. But additional tests are needed to confirm if Legionella bacteria is the cause behind it, such as a urine test, or a lab test involving a sample from phlegm (sputum) or lung lavage (lung washing), according to the CDC. The disease is treatable with antibiotics, but hospital care is often needed.

A rabid bat was found at Beavertail State Park. Here's what to know to stay safe.
An injured bat found at Beavertail State Park in Jamestown on July 30 tested positive for rabies. The Rhode Island Department of Health is alerting the public that the rabid bat was found near the hose spigot on the Lighthouse building by a worker, according to a news release. The bat was taken to a wildlife rehabilitation facility and later euthanized when staff noticed that the bat was displaying symptoms of rabies. It was submitted for testing to RIDOH's State Health Laboratories on Aug. 1. What to know about rabies Rabies is a fatal disease if it is not treated before the onset of symptoms, according to the release. Anyone who may have had direct contact with the bat should immediately call RIDOH's Center for Acute Infectious Disease Epidemiology at 401-222-2577 (Monday to Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.) or 401-276-8046 after hours. RIDOH should also be contacted if a pet may have come into contact with this bat. The rabies virus infects the central nervous system. If a person does not receive the appropriate medical care after a rabies exposure, the virus can cause disease in the brain, ultimately resulting in death. Rabies treatment must be started as soon as possible after exposure. All dogs, cats, and ferrets are required by state law to have current vaccination against rabies. Vaccination of pets prevents them from contracting rabies and prevents people from becoming exposed to rabies through their pets. How to prevent rabies To prevent rabies, people should: Make sure all dogs, cats, and ferrets are up to date on rabies vaccination. Avoid all contact with and do not feed stray or free-roaming domestic animals. Avoid all contact with and do not feed wild animals. Do not feed your animals outdoors, as this will attract other animals. This is especially dangerous when feeding large numbers of free-roaming cats.
