Iraq to set up AI data center to support Arab countries
The Prime Minister's Advisor for Artificial Intelligence Affairs, Diaa Al-Jumaili, revealed on Tuesday that the technical and organizational steps have already started and that a meeting with the Iraqi Prime Minister, Mohammed Shia Al-Sudani, will be held soon to finalize all of the discussions, as Iraq will be required to lay the groundwork for the center, according to the Iraqi News Agency (INA).
The step follows the approval of the Iraqi Prime Minister and Arab leaders during the Arab Summit held recently in the Iraqi capital, Baghdad, according to Al-Jumaili.
The Prime Minister's Office (PMO) previously said that Iraq's digital transformation is critical to the country's digital business and artificial intelligence strategy.
During his meeting last November with Deemah AlYahya, Secretary-General of the Digital Cooperation Organization (DCO), Al-Sudani stressed that the government has included digital transformation into its economic and administrative reforms, as well as electronic payments.
Al-Sudani emphasized the government's potential to make a big change in this area, as well as its willingness to collaborate with the DCO on initiatives that benefit Iraq and the region in the context of digital transformation and artificial intelligence.
In March, Ali Al-Alaq, governor of the Central Bank of Iraq (CBI), disclosed that the government is working on a comprehensive digital transformation strategy.
In a statement to INA, Al-Alaq highlighted that the government is following a plan aimed at transitioning to digital governance. He stated that Iraqi ministries would take a leading role since steps have already been taken, initiatives have been implemented, and a data center has been constructed.

Iraq denies halt in improved gasoline production amid self-sufficiency push
Baghdad ( – An Iraqi oil official moved to quell public concern on Sunday, strongly denying widespread rumors that the country has halted the production of improved-grade gasoline. Rafid Sadiq, media director for the state-run Oil Products Distribution Company, stated to a local news agency that information about a halt in production is 'completely incorrect.' He stressed that there is no final stop to this production. 'No governorate in Iraq has registered any crisis at any station regarding the availability of improved gasoline; the situation is very normal,' Sadiq affirmed, adding there is 'no crisis whatsoever in production or distribution.' The denial addresses recent rumors that production had ceased due to a halt in imports. This comes as Iraq works towards a major strategic goal of ending gasoline imports this year, a plan announced by Prime Minister Mohammed Shia Al Sudani in July. While new facilities like the Karbala refinery are adding significant domestic supply, the country still partially relies on imports to cover all its needs. Sadiq's statement aims to reassure the public of market stability during this transitional period.

Ayatollah Sistani's office rejects use of his image on political banners
Baghdad ( – The office of Iraq's highest Shia religious authority, Grand Ayatollah Ali al-Sistani, has issued a firm directive rejecting the use of his image by political and other service entities on public banners and posters. In a statement released on Sunday, the office specified that Ayatollah Sistani refuses to have his pictures displayed by 'some political and service entities' in public spaces. The directive placed special emphasis on banners raised along the routes used by pilgrims traveling to the holy city of Karbala to commemorate the Arbaeen of Imam Hussein. The office reiterated its 'rejection of this behavior once again,' urging everyone to 'refrain from such actions.' Furthermore, the statement called on 'concerned authorities to take appropriate measures' to address the issue. The directive underscores the long-standing position of the religious authority in Najaf to remain separate from political promotion and to preserve the spiritual nature of religious observances like the Arbaeen pilgrimage.
