Juve suffer shoot-out defeat to Empoli
Empoli began the match aggressively and looked to hit Juve on the counter-attack. After a couple of flurries forward from Juventus, in the 6th minute Nico Gonzalez found space on the left and delivered a dangerous ball into the box, but Devis Vasquez was alert to the danger and dealt with it. In the 8th minute, Randal Kolo Muani broke free down the right and fired in a threatening cross, which none of his team-mates were able to get on the end of. In the 17th minute, Juventus created an excellent chance: Kolo Muani linked up with Dusan Vlahovic, who in turn found Gonzalez, but the Argentine delayed his effort and was unable to capitalise on the opportunity. In the 20th minute Ismael Konate tried a shot from distance, in an attempt to catch Mattia Perin off guard, but the ball flew wide of the target.
Empoli took the lead in the 24th minute: Gonzalez lost possession in a dangerous area, Maleh latched onto Jacopo Bacci's pass and unleashed a precise right-footed strike from outside the box which nestled into the bottom corner to Perin's right. It was 1-0 to the Tuscan side. Juventus tried to react with a free-kick from the edge of the box in the 26th minute, but Teun Koopmeiners' shot smashed against the wall.
In the 38th minute, Kolo Muani created another chance, getting in behind down the right flank and delivering a teasing ball into the middle, but the Empoli defence cleared thanks to some last ditch defending. In the first minute added time at the end of the half, Empoli went close to doubling their lead: after a long clearance by Vasquez, Konate slotted in between the Bianconeri centre-backs and fired left-footed effort goalwards which took a deflection on its way hitting the post to Perin's left.
The teams went into the break with Empoli ahead 1-0.
The second half started with a great chance for the Tuscan side: as after just a minute, Maleh struck a left-footed shot from outside the box, but Perin was on hand to deny him. In the 52nd minute, Juventus came close from a free-kick by Vlahovic: the Serbian's left-footed effort was powerful, but Vasquez saved at full stretch. In the 57th minute, Kenan Yildiz went close to equalising: the Bianconeri's number 10 received the ball on the edge of the box, controlled well and let off a right footed shot, but his effort went just wide.
The Bianconeri's pressure was rewarded in the 66th minute, when Juventus found the equaliser through Thuram. The Frenchman received the ball in the box, beat Liam Henderson with a fantastic piece of skill and finished with a powerful right-footed strike towards the near post that left Vasquez with no chance.
Juventus pressed on and, in the 79th minute, went close to taking the lead through Vlahovic, who connected with a header from a Yildiz cross, but the effort was too central and landed safely in Vasquez's arms.
In the closing stages the Bianconeri upped the pressure: in the 85th minute Vlahovic broke free in the box and struck a right-footed effort over the crossbar. A minute later, Yildiz attempted a shot from the edge of the area in the aftermath of a corner, but the ball again sailed over the bar.
They were unable to find a winner, and it went to penalties.
In the resulting shoot-out Juve were punished for misses by Vlahovic and Yildiz, as Empoli made no mistake with their spot kicks and progress to the semi-final against Bologna.

Amrabat could be key to Douglas Luiz problem at Juventus
Juventus reportedly hope Fenerbahce can pick up Douglas Luiz and solve two problems in one go, handing over Sofyan Amrabat as part of the deal. The Bianconeri were stunned when the former Aston Villa midfielder did not turn up to pre-season training as expected this week, having given the club no warning, nor a justifiable reason for his absence. He will be fined and most likely frozen out of the squad, but selling him is going to be tricky, as anything less than €40m would mean making a loss just a year after his ill-fated transfer. Amrabat wanted by Juventus in Douglas Luiz swap LEWISBURG, WEST VIRGINIA – JUNE 14: Douglas Luiz #26 of Juventus arrives at the airport prior to the official FIFA Club World Cup 2025 on June 14, 2025 in Lewisburg, West Virginia. (Photo by) Now Tuttosport suggest that Juventus are hoping Fenerbahce can step in with a proposal, as they could solve two problems in one fell swoop. This would be both taking Douglas Luiz off their hands, and replacing him with a midfielder far more suited to coach Igor Tudor's tactics, namely former Fiorentina star Amrabat. There could even be a third additional bonus, as Fenerbahce might want to bring back Filip Kostic after his loan in Istanbul last season as part of the Amrabat and Douglas Luiz move. (Photo by) Douglas Luiz currently seems inclined on a return to the Premier League, but while there is some interest from Nottingham Forest and Everton, no firm proposals have yet arrived. According to the Corriere dello Sport, his entourage informed Juventus he wants to attend their training camp from early next week.

Tottenham target prolific Ligue 1 forward as Richarlison exit looms
Tottenham Track Ligue 1 Striker Kalimuendo as Attack Reinforcement Striker search intensifies amid Richarlison uncertainty Tottenham are reportedly eyeing a move for Rennes forward Arnaud Kalimuendo as they look to strengthen their attacking options ahead of the new season. According to RMC Sport, the 23-year-old is attracting strong interest from the Premier League, with Spurs emerging as a serious contender. Kalimuendo, who scored 17 goals and added four assists in Ligue 1 last season, has emerged as one of French football's most efficient finishers. Rennes are said to be open to selling but are demanding at least €30 million (£26 million). With clubs like RB Leipzig and Villarreal also interested, competition could intensify. Photo: IMAGO Forward options under review Tottenham's investment in Mohammed Kudus, Mathys Tel, Kevin Danso, Luka Vuskovic, and Kota Takai has signalled a long-term strategy, but the striker position remains an area of focus. Dominic Solanke impressed in his first season with 16 goals and eight assists in 45 appearances, yet concerns about depth persist. Photo IMAGO With Richarlison linked to moves away from North London and Tel still raw at 20, Kalimuendo could be a fitting solution. His movement, pace and finishing instincts align with the attacking structure Thomas Frank is building. Photo IMAGO Nottingham Forest also in the frame Nottingham Forest have also expressed interest in Kalimuendo, though it remains to be seen whether they can match Tottenham's project or ambition. RB Leipzig view the Frenchman as a potential replacement for Benjamin Sesko, should the Slovenian depart for Newcastle United. Rennes, meanwhile, are actively seeking a replacement, a sign they may be preparing for Kalimuendo's departure. Spurs' recruitment drive continues With over £120 million already spent, Tottenham's intent is clear. The push for Morgan Gibbs-White continues amid legal wrangling with Nottingham Forest, but bolstering the forward line appears to be next on the agenda. Kalimuendo may not be the marquee name, but he fits the club's transfer model: young, productive and with room to grow. Our View – EPL Index Analysis For Spurs fans, the link to Arnaud Kalimuendo should feel more exciting than it initially appears. This is a player who fits the current direction of the club: high-potential, smart-value targets that can contribute immediately but still develop further. Kalimuendo's numbers in Ligue 1 are not to be overlooked. Seventeen goals for Rennes, a side outside France's top two, suggests a striker capable of thriving in a team with more creative support. His off-the-ball movement and instinctive finishing would complement Solanke well, while also offering something different in approach. What's equally encouraging is that Spurs are not sitting still. The Richarlison situation could easily leave a gap in the squad, and relying solely on Tel to back up Solanke is risky. Kalimuendo feels like a calculated move, not a panic buy, and one with genuine upside. Of course, €30 million for a non-Premier League striker is always a gamble. But Spurs have made a habit of backing young talent in recent windows, and this would be no exception. The interest from Forest and Leipzig adds urgency, but if Tottenham are serious, they should act decisively. In a window that already reflects long-term planning, Kalimuendo would be another forward-thinking addition.

Gazzetta: Juventus rejected lucrative Chelsea offer for Yildiz
Reports from La Gazzetta dello Sport claim that Juventus have recently turned down a lucrative transfer offer from Chelsea for Turkey international Kenan Yildiz. According to Friday's reports (via Enzo Maresca's Club World Cup-winning side attempted to pinch Yildiz away from the Bianconeri, however, Juventus have outright rejected the approach and remain keen on handing the fan favourite a new and improved contract. Chelsea had reportedly been willing to offer a fee in the region of €65m-€68m to lure the 20-year-old away from the Allianz Stadium. (Photo by) Juventus remain clear in their stance that Yildiz is not for sale. How Juventus plan to keep hold of Yildiz The Old Lady intends on fending off any future interest in the Next Gen graduate by handing him another new and improved contract, one year on from his most recent bump in wages. Yildiz was handed a new deal at the beginning of the 2024-25 campaign, which saw his wages rise from around €300,000 per season to a figure close to the €1m-per-season mark. He was also handed the club's iconic no.10 shirt as a symbol of his importance to the team. Now, after a successful season on an individual level, Yildiz is set for another pay rise, as recent reports claim Juve are willing to nudge his salary up to somewhere in the region of €3.5m per season, in line with the other key first-team players in the Bianconeri squad.
