This week Durban's Clairwood residents were informed about how a multimodal transport network and the Cato Ridge inland dry port could help prevent the suburb from becoming a logistics hub.
Warwick Lord, CEO of Cato Ridge Inland Port, gave a presentation to residents in Clairwood on Friday titled: Catalyst for the increased efficiency and sustainability of trade in Sub-Saharan Africa. Desmond D'Sa, coordinator of the South Durban Community Environmental Alliance (SDCEA),called for the meeting.
In 2025, the municipality consulted stakeholders on amending the Land Use Scheme in Clairwood to Special Zone 40: Logistics. This aligned with the Local Area Plan (LAP) adopted by the City in 2014.
Lord explained that multimodal transport involves using more than one mode of transport to move goods and offers significant benefits, including lower transportation costs, shorter delivery times, and improved reliability. He stated that this will lead to reduced costs, faster deliveries, and more dependable service.
'In Africa, the integration of road, rail, and maritime transport is vital for optimizing supply chains and improving regional connectivity,' he said.
Lord added that South Africa acts as a major gateway for trade in Sub-Saharan Africa, with its extensive coastline and advanced port infrastructure. However, he noted that logistical inefficiencies, regulatory challenges, and infrastructural deficits hinder its potential as a regional logistics hub.
He emphasized that inland ports are instrumental in developing integrated transport solutions that strengthen logistics corridors, boosting trade competitiveness.

The country, he said, has well-developed port infrastructure, with major ports handling large cargo volumes.
Lord proposed several solutions to strengthen the logistics corridor which includes:
- Investment in infrastructure
- Development of intermodal facilities
- Standardization of processes
- Data sharing initiatives
- Improved customer services
According to Lord, since 9 August 2024 to 3 April 2025, 32 trains have traveled between Durban Port and Cato Ridge, removing approximately 1,408 truck trips from the roads in the past seven months, although December 2024 and January 2025 saw limited volumes.
'The facilities are well-equipped with reach stackers, security generators, and staff. Several local companies are inquiring about capacity and services. We are specifically seeking export clients who can pack goods in Cato Ridge and rail them to the port to ensure balanced loads,' Lord stated.
The city's deadline for submissions on the amendment was 8 April 2025. D'Sa described the presentation as excellent and highlighted alternatives that would not involve demolishing residential homes.
'The inland port presentation is an eye-opener and needs political will to be carried through. We did present objections to the city about the rezoning, and we hope we cannot be dictated to and lose our homes. We don't need to build infrastructure such as roads because rail provides a solution," he said.

Government urges reporting of illegal animal movements to control foot and mouth disease

Minister of Agriculture John Steenhuisen has called on the beef industry to follow the new rules aimed at stopping foot and mouth disease Image: File Minister of Agriculture John Steenhuisen has called on the beef industry to follow new rules aimed at stopping foot-and-mouth disease and urged the public to report any illegal actions to help control the outbreak. IOL previously reported that South Africa has been battling FMD for several months, prompting key trading partners, including Zimbabwe, Namibia, Botswana, and China, to suspend imports of meat and related animal products from the country. In response to the outbreak, the government has implemented new directives aimed at regulating the movement of cloven-hoofed livestock across the country. These directives require that all livestock movements be supervised and comply strictly with biosecurity measures. Only animals that meet these standards are allowed to move. Our visit to Karan Beef today forms part of ongoing efforts to strengthen biosecurity and disease management protocols in partnership with both provincial authorities and the private sector. Together, we are swiftly moving to protect our beef industry. — John Steenhuisen MP (@jsteenhuisen) June 23, 2025 Video Player is loading. They should not be mixed with others in feedlots until their health status has been confirmed," Steenhuisen said. "We're calling on maximum cooperation from the entire value chain, from farm level all the way through to consumer, to assist us in dealing with this particular matter, reporting unlawful behaviour where it is observed and also making sure there's strict adherence to the regulations. It's the only way we're going to get on top of foot and mouth disease in South Africa" The minister also added that the government has allocated R43 million to purchase vaccines and has started vaccinating animals in affected areas, including Gauteng and KwaZulu-Natal. "We've put aside R43 million departmental budget to date for the purchase of vaccines. Now we haven't used all of that yet. The first batch of 900,000 vaccines arrived in South Africa last week and we commenced with the vaccination over the weekend," he said. Navigating financial challenges: a guide for young South Africans

Discover how South Africa's youth can navigate financial challenges through essential literacy and practical steps towards financial stability. Image: IOL South Africa's youth face a financial reality arguably more complex than any previous generation. They're entering adulthood amid rising living costs and high unemployment rates. For many, the question isn't just how to build financial stability, but also about how to start. This Youth Month, the focus must shift from sympathy to strategy. Empowering the next generation starts with financial literacy. We need to provide young people with the knowledge and tools to understand money, take control of their financial choices, and unlock opportunities they may not realise are within reach. The financial challenges facing our youth Youth unemployment remains above 40%, and even those who are employed are often underpaid, under-resourced, and carrying financial burdens far beyond their years. Many are supporting extended families or navigating student debt without clear guidance on budgeting, saving, or investing. At the same time, today's youth are more digitally connected than ever. They're exposed to global markets, cryptocurrency hype, and influencers promising quick riches. But without understanding the basics, exposure becomes noise, and confidence can quickly turn to confusion. What's needed is not just access, but direction. A framework that helps young people make sense of their financial world, one decision at a time. Financial literacy isn't about knowing how to trade derivatives or pick winning stocks. It starts with understanding how to manage a budget, track expenses, and build a savings habit. From there, young people can begin learning about risk, compound growth, and long-term planning. Advertisement Next Stay Close ✕ Ad loading The sooner these lessons start, the better. A teenager who understands how interest works, both on debt and investments, is far more likely to avoid costly pitfalls and take advantage of wealth-building opportunities later on. For this reason, financial education must be presented in a relatable, jargon-free, and interactive way. Static textbook lessons won't cut it. Today's learners need dynamic, practical tools they can explore on their terms. Bridging the gap through technology and access By offering access to global markets in a secure and transparent way, and by delivering multilingual educational resources, we can help ensure young South Africans don't get left behind in the global financial conversation. But it's not just about giving youth the tools. It's also about meeting them where they are. That means mobile-first platforms, social content that explains market moves in real-time, and resources that reflect their lived experience, not someone else's theory. Six steps young South Africans can take today Whether you're a university student, recent graduate, or simply looking to get your finances on track, here are four small actions to help you start your financial journey: Track Your Spending - Utilise a simple app or a spreadsheet to monitor where your money goes each month. Understanding your spending habits is the first step toward effective budgeting. By categorising your expenses, you can identify areas where you might be overspending. This awareness empowers you to identify and eliminate unnecessary costs, reallocating those funds towards savings or debt repayment and ultimately helping you make more informed financial decisions. Start Saving, Even R50 a Month - Begin the habit of saving by setting aside even a small amount, like R50, each month. The key to building financial stability lies in consistency. Consider setting up an automatic transfer to your savings account immediately after receiving any income. Over time, these small contributions can compound, especially when placed in a high-interest savings account or investment vehicle, forming a solid foundation for your financial future. Build an Emergency Fund - Establishing a budget for an emergency fund will create a financial buffer against unforeseen expenses. This prevents you from relying on high-interest debt during tough times. Start small, automate your contributions, and consider allocating any unexpected windfalls, such as gifts, to this essential safety net to accelerate its growth. Manage Your Debt - If you have existing debts, such as student loans, prioritise paying more than the required monthly amount. This strategy will not only reduce the repayment period but also save you significant amounts in interest over time. Understand that all debt carries costs and requires disciplined management to maintain financial health . Open a Demo Account - Familiarise yourself with the financial markets by opening a demo account with a reputable company. This allows you to explore trading strategies and investment opportunities without risking real money. Use this platform to practice buying and selling stocks, forex, or other assets, helping you build confidence and understanding of market dynamics. Take the time to learn about the tools and resources available on the platform to enhance your trading skills. Join Free Financial Webinars - Participate in free webinars offered by reputable financial institutions. These sessions cover essential concepts.
