Christian Pulisic Emerges from National Team Absence with Clear Message
The United States Men's National Team is set to square off with border rival Mexico for the eighth time in the CONCACAF Gold Cup final on Sunday in Houston.

Prominent American analysts such as Fox Soccer's Alexi Lalas have suggested that USMNT is a "clear underdog" against defending champion Mexico given the state of the two rosters.
The Yanks are missing a number of key European-based players who chose to rest this summer in their final chance to have a break before the 2026 FIFA World Cup, which will be held in the United States, Mexico and Canada.
None of them faced more criticism for skipping the Gold Cup than longtime captain Christian Pulisic, who remained silent about Mauricio Pochettino's team until Thursday, when the USA-Mexico final was set.

'So proud of these guys," Pulisic, 26, wrote on his Instagram story. "One more to go.'

The message of support accompanied a graphic posted by the team that prominently featured Diego Luna.

Wearing Pulisic's No. 10 jersey, Luna has been the breakout star of the tournament, sending USMNT to the final with a brace against Guatemala in Wednesday's 2-1 semifinal win.
He has three goals and two assists in the competition, earning support on social media for a place on the 2026 World Cup squad even when the likes of Pulisic, Weston McKennie, Timothy Weah and Folarin Balogun return to the team.
Pulisic logged more than 3,500 minutes in all competitions for AC Milan across the 2024-2025 season. Before the Gold Cup, he told CBS Sports that his decision to skip the tournament was about putting himself and the team in the best position to succeed in 2026.

However, he also claimed that he asked to play in two pre-tournament friendlies, but Pochettino's staff denied his request.
Pulisic, who has 32 goals and 18 assists in 76 appearances for the Stars and Stripes, last appeared for the national team in back-to-back losses in the CONCACAF Nations League in March.
His all-time record against Mexico is four wins, three losses and two draws, including a loss in the 2019 Gold Cup final and a win in the 2021 Nations League final.

A 27-year-old right-hander, Buttó is 2-1 with a 2.47 ERA in 31 relief appearances, the last a two-inning outing at Pittsburgh last Saturday. New York recalled right-hander Chris Devenski from Triple-A Syracuse. Brought up for the fourth time this season, the 34-year-old right-hander has made four appearances for the Mets. Right-hander Kodai Senga, sidelined since June 12 by a strained right hamstring, is to start a rehab assignment Saturday with Double-A Binghamton. He is to throw 60-65 pitches, according to Mendoza, and soon could return to New York's injury-ravaged rotation. 'We'll see how it goes tomorrow and then see how he responds and we'll have a decision after that,' Mendoza said. 'He's going to to visit a doctor next week because of a holiday weekend,' Mendoza said. ___ AP MLB:

What does Amari Williams bring to the Boston Celtics rotation?
Amari Williams is the Boston Celtics' latest project. The British-born big man was selected with the 46th pick in the 2025 NBA Draft. Entering the NBA, his best asset is his playmaking, both from the post and in the half-court. Williams is also a reliable offensive weapon, capable of being a solid screener, rebounder and interior scorer. However, his defense has plenty of room for improvement. His limited hip flexibility and heavy feet mean quicker guards and forwards could target him. Williams, a five-year collegiate product out of Drexler and Kentucky, will likely spend his first professional season with the Maine Celtics in the G League. Boston has enjoyed strong success with their developmental pipeline in recent years. Brad Stevens will undoubtedly be hoping that the pipeline continues to pay dividends for the franchise. Advertisement If you haven't seen much of Williams' game, Tomasz Kordylewski posted an eight minute compilation of his best moments in college, showcasing all aspects of his game. From passing to interior scoring and even his ability to bring the ball up the court, Kordylewski captures a well-rounded view of Williams' skill set.
