No sign of survivors after search of plane crash site in Russias Far East

Moscow, Jul 24 (PTI) There was 'no sign" of survivors after an aerial search of the crash site of a plane carrying 49 people in Russia's Far East, according to media reports.
The Antonov An-24 turboprop aircraft crashed when it hit a forest-covered hill while making a second attempt to land at Tynda airport in Eastern Siberia.
It had 43 passengers and six crew on board, the Governor of Amur Region, which is close to the Chinese border, said on his Telegram channel.
No survivors were spotted during an aerial inspection of the site, the state-run TASS news agency reported, citing the regional civil defence and fire safety centre.
'According to the director of Tynda Airport, the plane caught fire upon impact, and a Mi-8 helicopter crew flying over the area reported no signs of survivors," it said.
The 50-year-old aircraft belonging to regional Angara Airlines was flying on the Khabarovesk-Tynda-Blagoveschensk route, according to the governor.
According to some experts quoted by Radio BFM, 'human error" in inclement weather could be a potential cause of the crash, while others blamed an engine problem.

Over 55 pc DU students opt for fourth year under FYUP; VC says trend as expected

'It is as per our expectations. We expected the same kind of numbers. We are all prepared for this new beginning,' Singh told PTI. According to DU Vice-Chancellor Yogesh Singh, around 31,004 of around 71,000 eligible students have opted out of the fourth year, which means over 55 per cent have chosen to pursue the optional final year. New Delhi, Jul 31 (PTI) More than 55 per cent of Delhi University students have chosen to continue with the fourth year of studies under the Four-Year Undergraduate Programme (FYUP), ahead of the new academic session beginning August 1. The FYUP, introduced under the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020, allows students to exit after one, two, or three years with a certificate, diploma, or degree respectively. Those who complete the fourth year are awarded an 'Honours with Research' degree, with a focus on research, entrepreneurship, and skill-based learning. Singh, who had earlier called the fourth year a 'game changer', said, 'This is the first time the focus is on research, entrepreneurship and skill.' The fourth year of FYUP is being implemented for the first time this year, and while the university sees the continuation rate as encouraging, some teachers' associations and educationists have raised concerns about its structure. Critics have pointed to possible dropout risks, unprepared infrastructure, and a lack of clarity about the fourth-year curriculum. There are also concerns about stretched faculty and limited funding for the programme's additional demands. Addressing these issues, the VC said, 'Don't worry. If facilities are not available, they will be created. It is in the interest of our students.' He also assured students and parents that the university has made all necessary arrangements for both first-year students and those entering the fourth year. 'It is a matter of happiness that one of the country's best higher education institutions is going to start another academic year. We will welcome our students with open arms,' he added. Delhi Zoo to welcome otters after two decades, Sangai deer to be sent to Surat as part of exchange

Now, a pair of smooth-coated otters from Gujarat is expected to arrive at the Delhi zoo by next month, marking a significant addition to its animal population. The transfer is part of an animal exchange programme with Surat Zoo, which will receive two pairs of Sangai deer from Delhi in return. The last otter at the zoo died in 2004 and since then efforts to procure the species had remained unsuccessful. New Delhi, Jul 31 (PTI) Otters are set to make a comeback at the National Zoological Park in Delhi after more than 20 years, officials said. 'A team from Delhi will travel to Surat next month to bring the otters here,' zoo director Sanjeet Kumar confirmed. 'We currently have more than 80 Sangai deer, the highest number in any zoo in the country, so we are in a position to send a few to Surat,' he said. The exchange had originally been scheduled for March, and a delegation from Delhi, including a zookeeper, had visited Surat to inspect the otters and study their habitat and care. However, high temperatures and unsuitable travel conditions led to a delay. 'It's essential that conditions are safe and comfortable for the animals on both sides before any transfer is made,' a senior zoo official said. The arrival of the otters will push the zoo's species count to 96, further enriching the biodiversity on display. 'In 2004, we lost our last otter. Since then, we haven't had one here and this exchange is a big step for us,' Kumar said. Meanwhile, the Delhi zoo is gearing up for a major infrastructure overhaul, with a comprehensive redevelopment plan currently underway. As part of this upgradation, authorities are working on developing a multi-utility plaza at the entrance, a new parking zone, glass-walled enclosures, and underwater aquariums to enhance the visitor experience. Established in November 1959, the Delhi Zoo is operated by the Union Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change, and remains one of the most-visited zoological parks in India.
