Imposter Posing As Marco Rubio Uses AI To Message Top US Officials: Report
United States: An imposter posing as US Secretary of State Marco Rubio sent AI-generated voice and text messages to high-level officials and foreign ministers, a report said Tuesday, the latest American official to be targeted by impersonators. A cable from Rubio's office said the unidentified culprit was likely seeking to manipulate powerful officials "with the goal of gaining access to information or accounts," the Washington Post reported. The impostor contacted at least three foreign ministers, a US state governor, and a member of Congress using both text messaging and the encrypted messaging app Signal, according to the cable dated July 3. Starting in mid-June, the impostor created a Signal account using the display name " to contact the unsuspecting officials, it added. "The actor left voicemails on Signal for at least two targeted individuals and in one instance, sent a text message inviting the individual to communicate on Signal," said the cable. The contents of the messages were unclear. The cable added that other State Department personnel were impersonated using email. Responding to an AFP request for comment, the State Department said it was aware of the incident and was "currently investigating the matter." "The Department takes seriously its responsibility to safeguard its information and continuously takes steps to improve the department's cybersecurity posture to prevent future incidents," said a senior State Department official. The FBI has previously warned that since April, "malicious actors" have impersonated senior US officials to target their contacts, including current and former federal or state government officials. "The malicious actors have sent text messages and AI-generated voice messages -- techniques known as smishing and vishing, respectively -- that claim to come from a senior US official in an effort to establish rapport before gaining access to personal accounts," the FBI said in May. In May, President Donald Trump said an impersonator breached the phone of White House Chief of Staff Susie Wiles. US senators, governors and business executives received text messages and phone calls from someone claiming to be Wiles, the Wall Street Journal reported. The breach prompted a White House and FBI investigation, but Trump played down the threat, saying Wiles "can handle it." Senior Trump administration officials have courted criticism for using Signal and other unofficial channels for government work. In March, then-national-security-adviser Michael Waltz inadvertently added a journalist to a Signal chat group discussing US strikes in Yemen. The episode led to Waltz's ouster. With proliferating AI voice cloning tools -- which are cheap, easy to use and hard to trace -– disinformation researchers fret the impact of audio deepfakes to impersonate or smear celebrities and politicians. Last year, a robocall impersonating then-President Joe Biden stoked public alarm about such deepfakes. The robocall urged New Hampshire residents not to cast ballots in a Democratic primary, prompting authorities to launch a probe into possible voter suppression and triggered demands from campaigners for stricter guardrails around generative AI tools. ac/aha

Jane Street row: Congress says ₹44,000 crore of ordinary investors siphoned off to U.S. under government's nose
The Congress on Tuesday (July 8, 2025) alleged that the New York-based hedge fund Jane Street has siphoned off ₹44,000 crore of 'unsuspecting small investors' by manipulating the Futures and Options (F&O) market, and questioned how the Modi government allowed this scam to go on for so long. Addressing a press conference at the All India Congress Committee (AICC) headquarters, Supriya Shrinate, party spokesperson and chairperson of the social and digital media department, claimed that Jane Street, an American algorithm trading firm, looted unsuspecting small investors of Indian markets for five continuous years, while the Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI) and all other regulatory institutions 'remained in deep slumber'. Ms. Shrinate said that SEBI's own findings on Jane Street show that the firm made a humongous profit of ₹44,000 crore between January 2023 and March 2025 and repatriated all that money to the U.S. 'Were the agencies sleeping?' 'The total profits must be much more than this amount as these were the profits for just two-year period while Jane Street has been doing business in India for almost five years,' she said, adding, 'Were the investigation agencies such as Enforcement Directorate (ED) and Income Tax sleeping?' Ms. Shrinate noted that Leader of the Opposition Rahul Gandhi had repeatedly and regularly cautioned the government about protecting the interests of the small investors in the F&O market, and still institutions such as SEBI and the National Stock Exchange (NSE), which are supposed to protect their interests, were caught napping as the 'looting' continued. Alleging gross negligence by SEBI, Ms. Shrinate said, 'Five months ago, it had issued a mild warning to Jane Street but did not take any action and allowed it to trade till July.' 'What were PM, other Ministers doing?' Claiming that details about Jane Street's working were in public domain, the Congress leader said that the hedge fund, during a court hearing in the U.S., had openly admitted that it had been making huge profits in India because of the 'inefficiencies here and still SEBI failed to take note'. 'Interestingly, this was the same Madhabi Puri Buch era of the SEBI that saw many other such scandals,' she said. Ms. Shrinate asked what were the Prime Minister, Home Minister, Finance Minister and the SEBI doing while Jane Street 'was robbing the Indian investors'. 'Who allowed Jane Street to repatriate such a huge amount of money to the U.S. and how does the government of India plan to get this money back,' she asked.

Ambush on Texas ICE agents: 10 charged with attempted murder; 'not a peaceful protest', says US attorney
AP file photo The US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents and other federal officers involved in immigration enforcement have come under attack in at least two ambush incidents recently in Texas, as per Fox News. The US Justice Department on Monday announced charges against 10 individuals accused of shooting a police officer in the neck and firing at other correctional officers outside the Prairieland Detention Center in Alvarado, Texas, during a Fourth of July attack. 'Make no mistake, this was not a peaceful protest,' said Nancy Larson, acting US attorney for the Northern district of Texas. "This was an ambush on federal and local law enforcement officers,' she added, as reported by NBC. In the attack, the group was dressed in all black, and reportedly started shooting fireworks at the facility which is used by the Department of Homeland Security to detain individuals engaged in immigration violations or awaiting deportation. The complaint notes that the defendants were "dressed in black, military-style clothing," some were donning body armor, some were armed, and some carried two-way radios. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like This Could Be the Best Time to Trade Gold in 5 Years IC Markets Learn More Undo The individuals charged are Cameron Arnold, also known as Autumn Hill; Savannah Batten; Nathan Baumann; Zachary Evetts; Joy Gibson; Bradford Morris, also known as Meagan Morris; Maricela Rueda; Seth Sikes; Elizabeth Soto; and Ines Soto. Three of the perpetrators are each charged with three counts of attempted murder of a federal officer and with three charges of firing a weapon during, in connection with and in support of a violent crime. Roughly 10 minutes after gathering at the ICE facility, one or two individuals separated from the main group and began spraying graffiti on vehicles and a guard post in the parking lot, as per the authorities. Photographs included in the criminal complaint, filed in the Northern District of Texas show messages like 'ICE pig' scrawled on the vehicles. Correctional officers informed 911, prompting a response from an Alvarado police officer. As the officer got out of his vehicle, a suspect hiding in the nearby woods allegedly shot him in the neck, the complaint states Another attacker, wearing a green mask and positioned across the street then allegedly fired 20 to 30 rounds at correctional officers who were unarmed, as they came outside. The group fled the scene, and sheriff's deputies stopped seven individuals roughly 274 meters from where the officer was shot, as reported by AP. "The shooting was captured by both CCTV and the APD officer's body-worn camera," the complaint says, as reported by FOX news. 'There was an AR-style rifle found at the scene' that was jammed, said Nancy Larson. Law enforcement also found a flag that read, 'RESIST FASCISM-FIGHT OLIGARCHY' while flyers stating , "FIGHT ICE TERROR WITH CLASS WAR!" and "FREE ALL POLITICAL PRISONERS," were also found along with spray paint and magazines with ammunition. 'It was a planned ambush with the intent to kill ICE corrections officers,' said Nancy Larson, as reported by AP. The shooting happened three days before another incident on Monday, when a man with an assault rifle opened fire at federal agents and a US Border Patrol facility in McAllen, about 643 kilometers south, injuring a police officer before being shot and killed by authorities, as reported by AP. The attacker is identified as 27-year-old Ryan Louis Mosqueda. On the fourth of July, four other suspects were arrested for allegedly targeting an ICE facility in Portland Oregon. The accused are Jeremy Andrew Hummel, Andrew Lee Wyatt Marcum, Riley Freeman and Ian Joseph McCarthy. Freeman, Marcum, and McCarthy appeared in federal court on Monday and were released pending further legal proceedings, according to KATU. Deputy Attorney General Todd Blanche said Saturday that the Justice Department was "closely monitoring the attacks on DHS detention facilities in Prairieland, TX, and Portland, OR, and are coordinating with the USAOs and our law enforcement partners." Since June, nearly two dozen people have been arrested in association with protests and attacks taking place in an ICE facility in Portland. The shooting comes amid US president Donald Trump ramping up deportations, which are set to accelerate further following the passage of a major spending bill last week.
