Starmer says UK will soon recognise Palestine unless Israel halts Gaza war
According to a government statement issued after an emergency cabinet meeting on Tuesday, Starmer said the move could come before the United Nations General Assembly in New York unless Israel agrees to a ceasefire, halts plans to annex parts of the occupied West Bank, and supports a political path towards a two-state solution.
'[Starmer] reiterated that there is no equivalence between Israel and Hamas and that our demands on Hamas remain, that they must release all the hostages, sign up to a ceasefire, accept that they will play no role in the government of Gaza, and disarm,' the statement added.
Starmer interrupted ministers' summer holidays to discuss a draft European-led peace initiative and plans to increase humanitarian aid to Gaza, where the UN has warned of looming famine.
While past UK governments have supported Palestinian statehood 'when the time is right', none has publicly tied it to a specific deadline or laid out preconditions so explicitly.
With pressure mounting from within Starmer's own party, his position appears to have shifted. More than half of Labour's backbench MPs have signed a letter urging the government to formally recognise a Palestinian state as leverage to push Israel towards peace.
Speaking to reporters, Starmer defended the timing and conditions of the announcement, saying the decision was driven by the 'intolerable situation' in Gaza and a fear that the two-state solution was slipping out of reach.
'This is intended to further that cause,' he said. 'It's done now because I'm particularly concerned that the idea of a two-state solution is reducing and feels further away today than it has for many years.'
He added that recognition of Palestine would be part of an eight-point peace plan the UK has been developing with European partners. Last week, French President Emmanuel Macron said France would formally recognise Palestine as a state, becoming the largest and most influential European nation to do so. European Union members Norway, Spain and the Republic of Ireland have previously said they recognise the State of Palestine.
Labour MP Sarah Champion, who organised the letter to Starmer, said there will never be a perfect moment to recognise Palestinian statehood, but warned this might be the last chance.
'What we do have, however, is the perfect storm to prevent a two-state solution ever happening,' she said. 'It is now or never if we believe in Palestinians' right to recognition.'

Earlier in the day, the Speaker of the Shura Council participated in a high-level meeting held on the sidelines of the Sixth World Conference of Speakers of Parliament on upholding international law and the un charter. The meeting discussed the risks arising from the systematic erosion of international legal norms and repeated violations of the principles of the UN Charter, particularly through unilateral military interventions and economic coercion. As part of the conference activities, Deputy Speaker of the Shura Council HE Dr Hamda bint Hassan Al Sulaiti took part in the first panel discussion on women's and youth participation in parliaments in times of polarization and adversity. In her remarks, she affirmed that the State of Qatar attaches special importance to the participation of women and youth in public life, considering it an urgent necessity to foster equal opportunities and enhance active participation in decision-making. She stressed that the State of Qatar is moving forward in achieving human development in line with the goals of Qatar National Vision 2030 and the national sectoral strategies, which emphasize that human development. That includes the empowerment of women and youth, a fundamental pillar for advancing society and achieving sustainable development. She noted that the State of Qatar has launched innovative initiatives that support the empowerment of women and youth, raise their political awareness, and strengthen their presence and participation in decision-making. Policies of force to eliminate Palestinian cause have failed, PM tells world body
The PM added that it has also become clear that policies of force have failed and will continue to fail in supressing the Palestinian cause. 'All they have achieved is to worsen the situation with more tragedy, bitterness, a sense of injustice, and horrific scenes of death and destruction that will remain etched in the memory of people around the world,' the PM continued. The horrors of this war and its political failure prove that there is no alternative to a just and comprehensive settlement of the Palestinian cause, he said, adding that the key lies in acknowledging the historical injustice suffered by the Palestinian people and applying long-overdue justice, delayed for nearly eighty years. 'Qatar, based on its unwavering support for peace, affirms its full support for the objectives of this conference and its keenness to play an active role in ensuring its success and enhancing the chances of a peaceful solution in the Middle East,' he said, noting that Qatar co-chaired the conference's third working group, which is concerned with the topic of 'Narratives of Peace.' The PM explained that this team addressed important topics and concluded with priority principles and proposals that contribute to the success of the conference's overall objective. In order to create a conducive environment for achieving sustainable peace, there is a need to promote positive narratives that support peace between the two sides, based on rejecting violence, renouncing inflammatory rhetoric, and confronting attempts to dehumanize the other side, he added. The PM reaffirmed Qatar's steadfast position in support of a peaceful resolution to the Palestinian cause, in accordance with international law, UN resolutions, and the two-state solution, being the only viable option to end the conflict and achieve a comprehensive and just peace. He added that from this standpoint, Qatar calls for a clear and unified international stance that opposes all practices that obstruct negotiations and the chances of achieving a just and lasting peace. The PM welcomed the recognition of the State of Palestine within the borders of June 4, 1967, encompassing the West Bank and Gaza Strip by several countries, describing such recognition as a crucial step toward achieving both regional and international peace and stability. He also reiterated Qatar's welcome of the French Republic's commitment to recognize the State of Palestine this coming September. The PM considered that the convening of this conference represents a collective international will to move from words to actions, and to genuinely contribute to advancing the peaceful resolution of the Palestinian Cause in all its dimensions. He pointed out that the international community bears a key responsibility in creating the right conditions for a durable and just resolution, including restoring the relevance of international legitimacy following this devastating war, and providing the necessary political, economic, and humanitarian support. The PM expressed Qatar's hope that this conference will mark a turning point, leading to tangible commitments that go beyond declarations and stances, and paving the way for concrete steps toward the implementation of the two-state solution, which would guarantee a just, comprehensive, and lasting resolution to the conflict as well as contributing to peace, security, and stability throughout the region. At the beginning of his statement, the PM expressed sincere appreciation to President of the French Republic Emmanuel Macron and HRH Crown Prince and Prime Minister of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia Prince Mohammed bin Salman bin Abdulaziz Al Saud, for their initiative in organising this historic conference under the auspices of the United Nations, addressing one of the oldest unresolved peace and security issues and one of the last vestiges of colonial injustice still on the international agenda.

Israeli settler kills West Bank activist who worked on Oscar-winning film
Agencies An Israeli settler has shot and killed Palestinian activist and teacher Awdah Hathaleen in a village near Hebron in the occupied West Bank, local officials and journalists said. Hathaleen was well known for his activism, including helping the creators of the Oscar-winning film No Other Land, which documents Israeli settler and soldier attacks on the Palestinian community of Masafer Yatta. He 'was shot dead by settlers … during their attack on the village of Umm al-Khair', in Masafer Yatta, the Palestinian Authority's Ministry of Education wrote on social media late on Monday. The two filmmakers behind No Other Land – Israeli journalist Yuval Abraham and Palestinian journalist Basel Adra – also confirmed that the activist was shot and killed. 'My dear friend Awdah was slaughtered this evening,' Adra wrote on social media. 'He was standing in front of the community centre in his village when a settler fired a bullet that pierced his chest and took his life,' he said. 'This is how Israel erases us — one life at a time.' Co-director Abraham described Hathaleen as 'a remarkable activist who helped us film No Other Land in Masafer Yatta'. Abraham also posted a video of the incident and said that 'residents identified Yinon Levi, sanctioned by the EU and US, as the shooter'. 'This is him in the video firing like crazy,' Abraham said. Israeli police acknowledged that they were investigating an 'incident near Carmel [al-Karmil]', an illegal Israeli settlement neighbouring Umm al-Khair. 'An Israeli citizen was detained at the scene and then arrested by police for questioning,' a police statement said.
