Renault Symbioz further embarrasses the Nissan Qashqai on price

Auto Express12-06-2025
The difference in price between the Renault Symbioz and its chief rival, the Nissan Qashqai, has just been expanded from a few hundred pounds to more than £3,000 thanks to the addition of a new entry-level, mild-hybrid engine to the French car.
Available now from £27,395, this version of the Renault family SUV features a turbocharged 1.3-litre four-cylinder petrol engine with mild-hybrid assistance to boost efficiency, plus a six-speed manual gearbox. Renault says this set-up will average up to 47.9mpg and emits 133 g/km of CO2.
This 'mild hybrid 140' powertrain is only offered with base Techno specification, but the standard equipment still includes a 10.4-inch central touchscreen, which comes with apps including Google Maps and Google Assistant built-in, wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, a 10.25-inch digital driver's display, a wireless charging pad, keyless entry, LED headlights, adaptive cruise control and a reversing camera.
At the same time, the Renault Captur and Symbioz have also both received a brand-new, full-hybrid powertrain for 2026 that offers improvements in performance and efficiency, thanks to a bigger, more powerful engine and a larger battery pack. Advertisement - Article continues below
The new full-hybrid 'E-Tech 160' powertrain produces 158bhp from a combination of a 1.8-litre four-cylinder petrol engine and two electric motors – a 48bhp e-motor that can drive the front wheels, plus a 20bhp starter-generator to help fire up the engine.
The motors are fed by a 1.4kWh battery – an increase on the old 1.2kWh pack – which will allow for more pure-electric driving, a smoother driving experience and lower fuel consumption. Meanwhile, the automatic transmission has been updated to deliver smoother gearchanges and reduce noise levels on the motorway.
The extra grunt and other tweaks have shaved more than a second off both car's 0-62mph sprint times, with the added benefit of the towing capacity increasing from 750kg to 1,000kg.
Finally, every Captur is also now fitted with auto-hold as standard, mid-range versions get adaptive cruise control, and top-spec models are equipped with lane centering, occupant safe exit, blind-spot recognition, emergency lane-keeping assist and rear cross-traffic alert.
Prices for the Captur E-Tech 160 start at £25,195, with the Symbioz E-Tech 160 available from £29,795.

Ferrari's stance on hiring Christian Horner after Red Bull sacking

Ferrari have seemingly made a decision on whether to pursue Christian Horner after he was sacked by Formula 1 rivals Red Bull. On Wednesday, the F1 world was stunned by the announcement that Horner had been 'relieved of his operational duties' by Red Bull, the team he had run for over two decades. A number of factors led to the 51-year-old's downfall, including a reported power struggle at the team, their poor performance over the past 12 months and the loss of key members of staff. He also had a long-running feud with star driver Max Verstappen's dad Jos, while the allegations of coercive behaviour towards a female colleague, for which he was twice cleared following internal investigations, continue to hang over him. Regardless, Horner, husband of former Spice Girl Geri Halliwell, is one of the greatest F1 team principals in history having won eight drivers' championships and six constructors' championships. So it would not be a surprise to see the Brit back in the F1 paddock at a rival team in the near-future, with Sky Sports reporting that Horner's gardening leave ends at the end of the year. Horner still had over five years left on his contract at the time of dismissal and is still technically employed by Red Bull, with his lawyers working on a settlement agreement which could reportedly pocket him over £66million. Several teams have been linked with his services, including French outfit Alpine, who are currently last in the standings, and Cadillac who will join the grid next year. Ferrari have repeatedly attempted to lure Horner to Italy over the years and it was reported that they had approached him again just a few months ago. The Scuderia have not won either championship since 2008 though they did come very close to winning the constructors' title last season. Those reports were dismissed by Ferrari team principal Frederic Vasseur but he remains under severe pressure with his side far behind runaway championship leaders McLaren. The Frenchman is out of contract at the end of the year which could open the door for Horner, but he retains the backing of Sir Lewis Hamilton and The Times now report that Ferrari are in negotiations to extend Vasseur's deal. Prior to leaving Red Bull, Horner addressed the rumours linking him with Ferrari, telling Sky Sports in May: 'It's always very flattering to be associated with other teams. 'My whole career has been spent with Red Bull and I'm absolutely committed to this team. There are so many rumours and speculations these days, it's not even worth listening to. Due to the intense rivalry between Red Bull and Hamilton's former team Mercedes, the seven-time world champion doesn't have the best of relationships with Horner. As such, Horner's potential move to Maranello may not go down so well with Hamilton who has cited Vasseur as a key factor in his decision to join the Italian team. 'I can't imagine this is the last that we will see or hear of Christian Horner. He already said he has big plans for 2026,' F1 pundit Will Buxton told The Sports Agents podcast. Ferrari – 6/4 Aston Martin – 12/5 Cadillac – 5/1 Alpine, Williams – 16/1 Odds courtesy of AceOdds 'There have been rumours already this year that he was being courted by Alpine, rumours linking him to Ferrari. More Trending 'I think that one's more of a stretch than the Alpine one. He's very close with Flavio Briatore. That one would seem to be more logical for me. 'If they replaced Fred with Christian Horner, I don't think Lewis would be a Ferrari driver for much longer!' RAY MASSEY: Car fans flock to Goodwood Festival of Speed

This weekend, more than 200,000 car fans and families are enjoying the sold-out Goodwood Festival of Speed – which has become the nation's unofficial motor show set in a stately home garden party. The four-day automotive extravaganza ( takes place in the parkland grounds of Goodwood House, near Chichester, and is hosted by the Duke of Richmond – under whose stewardship it has grown massively in scale and ambition since its launch in 1993. As well as attracting a record number of champion drivers and cars from Formula One – this year enjoying its 75th anniversary – the Festival of Speed provides a launchpad for debuts from sporting, luxury, supercar and mainstream car firms including Aston Martin, with its new Vantage S and Vanquish Volante, BMW, Chevrolet and Ferrari. Goodwood marks the UK debut of Renault's new R4 E-Tech electric crossover, which is also tackling the challenging 1.16-mile hill-climb course. Priced in three trim levels from £26,995 to £30,995, the new R4 is the more practical sibling of the award-winning Renault 5 E-Tech, costing from £22,995, which landed in UK driveways from April. Order books for the R4 open from July 15 ahead of the first deliveries in October. On static display is a design model of the head-banging £140,000 555hp Renault 5 Turbo 3e mini supercar, which accelerates from 0 to 62 mph in under 3.5 seconds, up to a top speed of 167 mph. Expect first deliveries from 2027. Legendary American marque Chevrolet is unveiling its first hybrid Corvette 'muscle-car' with my name on it: the 643 horsepower (473 kW) E-Ray. Combining a 6.2 litre V8 petrol engine with an electric motor, it accelerates from 0 to 62 mph in a sizzling 2.9 seconds and is available to order in right-hand drive from £153,440 for the coupe and £159,230 for the convertible. First deliveries in September. Chinese car-giant BYD presents its new premium brand Denza, ahead of its UK launch in early 2026. It is showing three fully electric and plug-in hybrid cars: a Z9 GT shooting brake, upmarket MPV called D9 and a rugged Land Rover Discovery rival called B5. BYD itself recently launched its new Dolphin Surf electric city car with a range of 200 miles and priced from £18,650. Ferrari is featuring four new models, including debuts of the new Amalfi sports car, which I road tested this month, the 296 Speciale, F80 and 12Cilindri.= The giant central display in front of Goodwood House honours 60 years of car design by the legendary Gordon Murray, whose highlights include the McLaren F1 supercar and lightweight T.50 hypercar. Bentley For decades it has been the iconic 'Front of House' gateway for VIP guests, prospective owners and even journalists like me as they entered British luxury car-maker Bentley's headquarters in Crewe. But following Tuesday's reveal of its futuristic grand tourer, the doors to Bentley's mission control centre will be shut to outsiders. The historic building is taking on a new role as a top secret Design Centre – twice the size of the old one and housing 50 designers – where models will be created on its road to electrification. Bentley CEO, Dr Frank-Steffen Walliser, said: 'We are steering the biggest design revolution in our history.'
