Pa Ranjith, 3 Others Booked After Stuntman SM Raju's Death During Arya Film Shoot

Last Updated: SM Raju Death: Pa Ranjith and three crew members booked under BNS Act after stuntman SM Raju died during Arya's film shoot in Nagapattinam. SM Raju Death: A tragic accident during the shoot of Tamil film Vettuvan on July 13 resulted in the death of veteran stunt director SM Raju. The fatal incident took place in Tamil Nadu's Nagapattinam district while filming a high-risk car-toppling stunt for the Arya-starrer, helmed by Pa Ranjith. He was rushed to the Nagapattinam Government Medical College Hospital but was declared dead. And now, director Pa Ranjith has been booked by Keelaiyur police along with three others in the death case. Initially, the case was filed under Section 194 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) Act. The complaint named director Pa Ranjith, stunt choreographer Rajkamal, Neelam Productions, and Prabhakaran. However, after reviewing the evidence and questioning those involved, the police revised the charges. The case has now been filed under Sections 289 (negligent conduct), 125 (abetment of an offence), and 106(1) (culpable homicide not amounting to murder) of the BNS. The authorities suspect lapses in safety protocols and poor planning of the stunt sequence. Raju's mortal remains were handed over to his family after a postmortem. Meanwhile, the case continues to develop as police examine accountability and possible negligence on part of the film's crew and production team. Disturbing video clips from the set that are being shared on social media show a speeding car overturning violently. Crew members are seen rushing to the crash site and pulling Raju from the mangled vehicle, only to discover he had not survived the impact. SM Raju was a respected name in the Tamil film industry, known for choreographing several intense action scenes throughout his career. His sudden demise has sent shockwaves through Kollywood and reignited conversations around stunt safety measures. Actor Vishal, who had collaborated with Raju on many action-heavy films, expressed his grief on social media. Taking to his official X (formerly Twitter) handle, Vishal wrote, 'So difficult to digest the fact that stunt artist Raju passed away while doing a car toppling sequence for jammy @arya_offl and @beemji Ranjith's film this morning. Have known Raju for so many years and he has performed so many risky stunts in my films time and time again as he is such a brave person." Vishal went on to assure support for Raju's bereaved family, adding, 'My deepest condolences and may his soul rest in peace. May God give more strength to his family for their grave loss. Not just this tweet but will definitely be there for his family's future, being from the same film industry and also for his contribution to so many films. From the bottom of my heart and as my duty I extend my support for them. God bless." Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's. Please keep discussions respectful and constructive. Rajinikanth compared ‘Coolie' with Mani Ratnam's ‘Thalapathi', reveals Lokesh Kanagaraj

Acclaimed Tamil filmmaker Lokesh Kanagaraj, who is awaiting the release of Coolie, his much-awaited action film with Rajinikanth, revealed on Monday (July 14) that the superstar compared Coolie with his iconic 1991 Mani Ratnam-directed film Thalapathi. In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter India, Lokesh, while speaking about how he didn't want to change the idea of a Rajinikanth film, said that he wished to emulate the delicate balance of star-filmmaking and flair that Mani Ratnam's film had. 'Out of all the films he has done, I love Thalapathi the most, and I have tried to maintain that balance with this film. That is what I have tried to achieve in writing Coolie.' Fascinatingly, after watching the film while dubbing, Rajinikanth too seems to have understood what Lokesh was going for in Coolie. 'He hugged me and said, 'It looks like Thalapathi to me.' And that made my day. That was the night I slept very peacefully after so many months. Because that's what I was trying to achieve. This is what I was telling my friends, 'If at all I am doing a film with Rajini sir, it has to be something at least near Thalapathi.' I can't say I have done a film that's on par with Mani Ratnam sir's quality; that is impossible. But I wanted that little satisfaction in my film being compared with that film. And listening to the same words from Rajini sir is something I consider an achievement,' added Lokesh. Earlier, the director had revealed that he had a different story pitched to and approved by Rajinikanth, but that he requested the superstar to consider a different script. Now, while recounting the same, Lokesh has revealed that the original film was a fantasy film. 'And Rajini sir was immediately on board with that idea. The problem was that even assembling it took so much time. Moreover, to prepare, make everyone available and then go on the floors, it would have taken one and a half years.' But Lokesh didn't want to waste Rajinikanth's time. 'I had worked for two months on that film, and then one day I called him and asked to meet. I told him, 'Let's not do this film; let's do another story.' That's when I told this idea (Coolie),' said Lokesh, explaining how he had originally given the idea of Coolie to a director friend of his. 'This is an idea I had thought of 5-6 years ago. In fact, I had given this story to one of my friends to direct, and he was trying to make it, but he couldn't do it. Later, when I decided not to do that original film with Rajini sir, I asked my friend, 'Hey, give the story back. I will give you something else. Let me work on this,' and he agreed to it, and that's how this film started.' Slated to release in theatres on August 14, Rajinikanth's Coolie features an ensemble star cast that includes Upendra, Nagarjuna Akkineni, Pooja Hegde, Soubin Shahir, Sathyaraj, and Shruti Haasan. While Pooja Hegde is set to appear in a special role, teased in the recently released track 'Monica', Bollywood superstar Aamir Khan will feature in a special cameo in the film. Anirudh Ravichander is composing music for the movie, while Girish Gangadharan is the cinematographer. Anbariv is in charge of the stunt choreography. Produced by Kalanithi Maran of Sun Pictures, Coolie will face off with the spy action drama War 2, starring Jr NTR and Hrithik Roshan, at the box office. Meanwhile, Rajinikanth is currently shooting for Jailer 2. Directed by Nelson, the movie is a sequel to the hit 2023 movie. Anirudh is the music composer for Jailer 2, which will also feature Kannada star Shivarajkumar in an important role.

Siddhant Chaturvedi says he wants to ‘disrupt the market' with diverse roles; Triptii Dimri credits their friendship for chemistry in Dhadak 2

The much-awaited romantic drama Dhadak 2 is all set to hit the screens, and fans can't stop talking about the intense chemistry between Triptii Dimri and Siddhant Chaturvedi. Their performances in the trailer have already created a buzz, with many praising their on-screen connection. Speaking about her experience working with Siddhant, Triptii said that they got along well from the very beginning. She credited their director, Shazia Iqbal, for helping the actors form a strong bond before the cameras even rolled. 'We had become quite good friends right from the very first day, and all the credit for that goes to our director, Shazia Iqbal,' Triptii told ANI. 'She organised a workshop for us in a format where all the actors interacted, played games for about 5-6 days, and tried to understand each other. I think when that happens, you don't need to try and force chemistry. You actually become friends, and that's what happened in our case,' she added. In the same interaction, Siddhant opened up about the choices he makes as an actor and how he doesn't want to limit himself to just one kind of role. He said, 'I always work on playing a different character every time. We enjoy it as actors. It's not like if people like you in a certain character, you just stick to doing that. Because if that were the case, I would have kept doing similar roles even after my first film.' 'But I always think that I want to do different kinds of roles. As a person, as an actor, I want to grow. So, the effort is always to find a new character, because doing the same thing again doesn't bring joy,' he added. 'I feel like if you keep doing one kind of role, something you're known for, then you build a market for yourself. But as far as I am concerned, I've come to disrupt the market, not just build it. I want to break that. Every time, I want to appeal to a different age group, a different gender, different regions, demographics,' he further said. The trailer for Dhadak 2 was unveiled last week, giving fans a glimpse of how Siddhant and Triptii fight for their love and life in a promising film that tackles caste discrimination. It also highlights themes of identity, power dynamics, and the painful emotional cost of love. The film follows Siddhant's character as he navigates a love story that breaks through societal expectations and class barriers. Dhadak 2 is a follow-up to 2018's Dhadak and a remake of filmmaker Mari Selvaraj's 2018 Tamil film Pariyerum Perumal.
