SM Raju Death: Pa Ranjith and three crew members booked under BNS Act after stuntman SM Raju died during Arya's film shoot in Nagapattinam.
SM Raju Death: A tragic accident during the shoot of Tamil film Vettuvan on July 13 resulted in the death of veteran stunt director SM Raju. The fatal incident took place in Tamil Nadu's Nagapattinam district while filming a high-risk car-toppling stunt for the Arya-starrer, helmed by Pa Ranjith. He was rushed to the Nagapattinam Government Medical College Hospital but was declared dead.
And now, director Pa Ranjith has been booked by Keelaiyur police along with three others in the death case. Initially, the case was filed under Section 194 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) Act. The complaint named director Pa Ranjith, stunt choreographer Rajkamal, Neelam Productions, and Prabhakaran. However, after reviewing the evidence and questioning those involved, the police revised the charges. The case has now been filed under Sections 289 (negligent conduct), 125 (abetment of an offence), and 106(1) (culpable homicide not amounting to murder) of the BNS.
The authorities suspect lapses in safety protocols and poor planning of the stunt sequence.
Raju's mortal remains were handed over to his family after a postmortem. Meanwhile, the case continues to develop as police examine accountability and possible negligence on part of the film's crew and production team.
Disturbing video clips from the set that are being shared on social media show a speeding car overturning violently. Crew members are seen rushing to the crash site and pulling Raju from the mangled vehicle, only to discover he had not survived the impact.
SM Raju was a respected name in the Tamil film industry, known for choreographing several intense action scenes throughout his career. His sudden demise has sent shockwaves through Kollywood and reignited conversations around stunt safety measures.
Actor Vishal, who had collaborated with Raju on many action-heavy films, expressed his grief on social media. Taking to his official X (formerly Twitter) handle, Vishal wrote, 'So difficult to digest the fact that stunt artist Raju passed away while doing a car toppling sequence for jammy @arya_offl and @beemji Ranjith's film this morning. Have known Raju for so many years and he has performed so many risky stunts in my films time and time again as he is such a brave person."
Vishal went on to assure support for Raju's bereaved family, adding, 'My deepest condolences and may his soul rest in peace. May God give more strength to his family for their grave loss. Not just this tweet but will definitely be there for his family's future, being from the same film industry and also for his contribution to so many films. From the bottom of my heart and as my duty I extend my support for them. God bless."

No bail for Ghaziabad pastor, aide arrested for ‘religious conversion'

The Ghaziabad District Court on Tuesday rejected the bail application of a pastor and a Ghaziabad resident who were arrested for allegedly attempting to convert members of the Scheduled Caste by offering them inducements. Police had arrested two men, pastor Vinod Kunj Mohan (50) and Premchand Jatav (66), following a complaint filed by Bajrang Dal member Prabal Gupta on June 15. He had alleged that the pastor carried out religious conversions at Jatav's home. During Tuesday's hearing, Ghaziabad Additional Session Judge Rohit Aggarwal said that there is no relevant ground for releasing the pastor. 'Keeping in view all the facts and circumstances of the case and in the light of the gravity of the crime and various documentary and oral evidence collected during the investigation against the accused, Vinod Kunj Mohan, there is no relevant ground for releasing the applicant on bail,' read the order. 'Accordingly, the first bail application of the applicant is liable to be dismissed on merits,' it added. While rejecting Premchand's bail plea, too, the court said that there were no relevant grounds for his release. The two were booked under sections 115(2) (voluntarily causing hurt), 351(3) (threats involving death), 352 (breach of peace) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita as well as under the Uttar Pradesh Prohibition of Unlawful Conversion of Religion Act, 2021. During the hearing, Mohan's lawyer had submitted before the court that his client had never converted anyone. 'There is no proof of his involvement, and the complainant, who is an active member of the Bajrang Dal, has falsely implicated him in the case,' he had told the court. 'The FIR is to gain political benefits,' he had added. The lawyer had further submitted that no recovery of any item was made from the place where the alleged conversions took place. 'When anyone is converted, writings and readings are involved… but nothing was found,' the petitioner had told the court. Neetika Jha is a Correspondent with The Indian Express. "When some residents of the society came to our house and were talking to my wife about the incident, the boys managed to flee," he said, accusing police of not reacting quickly enough to detain the boy at the spot. "The boys were harassing my daughter for a long time on social media platforms. Whenever she refused to talk, they threatened her," he said. Bhaskar Verma, ACP of Kavi Nagar, said a police team had been formed to investigate and CCTV footage of the society was also being examined. "We sent the girl for a medical examination. Though the Class XI student named as accused and the girl did not study in the school together, he and her brother did. "The main accused and her brother were in our school till Class 10. Both did not continue in Class 11," the school manager said.

Additionally, the police invoked sections 75 and 82 of the Juvenile Justice (Care and Protection of Children) Act, 2015, against the accused. During the hearing, the counsel representing the accused submitted that of the aforesaid offences levelled against them, barring the offences punishable under sections 110 and 299 of BNS, rest were bailable. The govt pleader, while opposing the bail application, contended that the offences levelled against the applicants were serious and submitted that if the applicants were granted bail, they would tamper with the evidence and witnesses. According to a govt lawyer, investigation into the "white pill" routinely given to the inmates, as alleged, was yet to be completed. "It prima facie appears that the investigation is mostly completed. The offences levelled against the applicants are bailable, except the two under BNS sections 110 and 299. The physical detention of the applicants does not appear necessary for the reasons stated by the investigation officer in his reply," additional sessions judge MS Deshpande said while citing a couple of past Supreme Court judgments.
