Ayushmann Khurrana on Diwali Holiday Release for Horror-Comedy ‘Thama' (EXCLUSIVE)

Yahoo27-05-2025
Bollywood star Ayushmann Khurrana's horror-comedy 'Thama' has locked in a Diwali 2025 release, marking the first time the critically acclaimed actor will headline a major festive window release in his decade-plus career.
The Maddock Films production, produced by Dinesh Vijan and directed by Aditya Sarpotdar, represents a significant career escalation for Khurrana, who has built his reputation as one of Hindi-language cinema's most bankable stars through unconventional script choices and socially conscious comedies.

'Thama' represents an expansion of Maddock's horror-comedy universe. The studio, known for releasing films like 'Stree 2,' 'Munjya,' and 'Teri Baaton Mein Aisa Uljha Jiya' in a blockbuster 2024, unveiled a slate of eight interconnected films set to release over the next four years, earlier this year.
The lineup begins with 'Thama,' followed by 'Shakti Shalini' on Dec. 31. In 2026, audiences can expect 'Bhediya 2' on Aug. 14 and 'Chamunda' on Dec. 4. The following year includes 'Stree 3' on Aug. 13 and 'Mahamunjya' on Dec. 24. The universe will culminate in 2028 with 'Pehla Mahayudh' on Aug. 11 and 'Doossra Mahayudh' on Diwali, Oct. 18.'It feels amazing to have a big Diwali release with 'Thama.' It is the biggest release of my career and I'm really eager to spread joy, happiness and laughter with the entire country with 'Thama,'' Khurrana said. 'The fact that my film could be one of the reasons for people to have a great festive period feels really surreal.'
The Diwali slot has traditionally been reserved for Bollywood's biggest stars and tentpole releases, making Khurrana's booking a testament to his box office evolution from indie darling to commercial heavyweight. 'Thama' is currently the only Bollywood film releasing during the Diwali holiday frame, which falls on Oct. 20 this year.
'For me, Diwali is about togetherness, it is about family and it is about having the best community experience by spending time with your friends,' the 'Vicky Donor' star said. 'I'm a big movie buff and every year, I have a ritual to go to the theatres with my family and watch a film on Diwali. We have so much fun together and it makes me so happy to see scores of people thronging to the theatres to watch these big releases.'
'Thama' brings together an ensemble cast including Rashmika Mandanna, Paresh Rawal, and Nawazuddin Siddiqui. Aditya Sarpotdar directs from a screenplay by Niren Bhatt, Suresh Mathew, and Arun Fulara, with Dinesh Vijan and Amar Kaushik producing.
'I'm giving my everything for 'Thama' and I can see my producers Dinesh Vijan and Amar Kaushik, my director Aditya Sarpotdar and the entire team of 'Thama' put in every drop of their energy to make this film a truly incredible big screen experience that will be memorable for everyone,' Khurrana said.
Maddock Films gained prominence in the horror-comedy space in 2018 with 'Stree,' which popularized the genre in Bollywood. The film's blend of humor, supernatural elements and folklore struck a chord with audiences, paving the way for further exploration of the genre. This new cinematic universe is a natural evolution for the studio, bringing together characters and storylines into an interconnected narrative.
The company's epic historical saga 'Chhaava,' starring Vicky Kaushal, is the biggest Indian box office success of 2025 so far.

Indian Box Office: ‘Maa' Falls Behind ‘Sitaare Zameen Par'

The new Hindi release, 'Maa' scores less than last week's 'Sitaare Zameen Par'. Both are Indian ... More films. The latest Hindi release, Maa, completed its first weekend at the box office and scored nearly $3 million worldwide in three days. Featuring Kajol in the lead role, the Indian horror drama hit theatres on June 27 and has seen a steady growth ever since. The collections, however, remained lower than that of last week's Hindi release - Sitaare Zameen Par. Maa: Kajol's film closes first weekend at $3 million The new Hindi film, Maa, has scored a decent figure at the ticket windows. Despite stiff competition, the horror film managed to post a decent weekend figure. On the other hand, Aamir Khan's Sitaare Zameen Par posted better figures in its second weekend at the box office. Akshay Kumar-Vishnu Manchu's Kannappa also hit theatres on June 27. Maa made an opening collection of nearly $700,000 in India and the global opening figure stood slightly below $800,000. Given the positive reviews and a good word-of-mouth, collections for Maa saw an upward trend over the weekend. The film registered a two-day collection of $1.5 million in India and $1.7 million worldwide. It closed the first weekend at $2.5 million in India and $3 million at the global ticket windows. Indian star Aamir Khan poses with the cast of his new Hindi film 'Sitaare Zameen Par' on a poster of ... More the film. After making record opening collections last weekend, Sitaare Zameen Par scored well over the week as well. In its second weekend alone, Sitaare Zameen Par made nearly $10 million at the global ticket windows. After closing the first week at a little above $16 million, the RS Prasanna directorial proved to be a tough competition for Maa. Sitaare Zameen Par, based on Spanish film Campeones, earned almost $1 million on its eighth day at the ticket windows. By the end of its second weekend at the box office, the film scored a total of $23.5 million worldwide. Kajol essays the titular role of a mother while Indraneil Shubhra Sen Gupta is her husband in Maa. Ronit Roy plays a pivotal part in the film which also features Dibyendu Bhattacharya, Surjyasikha Das, Roopkatha Chakraborty and Yaaneea Bharadwaj. Indian star Kajol on a poster of the Hindi film 'Maa'. It marks the first Hindi theatrical release ... More for director Vishal Furia. Directed by Vishal Furia, Maa is the story of a mother-daughter duo and how they manage to escape social and supernatural evils despite little support around them. The film is directed by the filmmaker who made Prime Video India originals Chhorii and Chhorii 2. It is also touted to be a film from Devgn's Shaitaan universe. However, Maa is neither as scary and engrossing as Shaitaan, nor is it as socially-aware and sensitive as the Chhorii films. Maa relies heavily on weird make-up and getup for the horror impact of the film. More than scaring the audience, it reminds us of the 90s Hindi TV serial, Aahat. Back then, Hindi cinema knew no better and banked majorly on the optics, avoiding the focus on better writing. On all the three days of its second weekend, the scores for Sitaare Zameen Par remained almost double those of Maa. A significant reason for this was the screen-share. Khan's movie already secured a major screen count in India and outside, leaving little for the new Hindi film. Maa released in theatres on June 27 though it was the first weekend at the box office for the horror film. Produced by Akshay Kumar, Kannappa also hit theatres on June 27, emerging as a competition for Maa. Directed by Mukesh Kumar Singh, Kannappa stars Vishnu Manchu along with Akshay Kumar who essays the role of Hindu God Shiva. The film made an opening collection of $1.7 million and closed the first weekend at $3.8 million worldwide.

HYBE to expand to India in fourth quarter of 2025

1 Jul - K-pop powerhouse HYBE is continuing its expansion to other countries, with the latest being India. The news was announced by the agency on 30 June, stating that it is set to establish its Indian branch in September or October as part of HYBE founder Bang Si-hyuk's "multi-home, multi-genre" strategy. "[This] means that we lead a local music market by blending in with the local culture. We have already seen visible results from the United States through this strategy. HYBE America's girl group KATSEYE landed on the major music chart Billboard Hot 100 within less than a year of debut," HYBE stated in its press release. It continued, "Chairman Bang has a strong belief that K-pop should not just remain a genre of music, but a methodology of itself that generates super intellectual properties based on the wants and needs of the public." The agency bought Scooter Braun's Ithaca Holdings back in 2021 and launched KATSEYE as its first international girl group. It later established HYBE Japan, which manages boy bands &TEAM and aoen, as well as HYBE Latin America in 2023. It also has a Chinese branch called HYBE China. (Photo Source: KATSEYE IG, All Kpop)
