Wisconsin basketball star worked out with four NBA teams before return to Madison
Wisconsin basketball star John Blackwell worked out with several NBA teams prior to officially withdrawing from the 2025 draft and returning to the Badgers for the 2025-26 season.
Blackwell, who will officially don the Badger threads for at least one more season as a junior, worked out with the Chicago Bulls, Milwaukee Bucks, Portland Trailblazers and Philadelphia 76ers before sharing his plans to return to school on Wednesday.
While the Michigan native's NBA prospects remained slim throughout the pre-draft process, Blackwell capitalized on the opportunity to showcase his skill set in front of NBA scouts and executives. Outside of exposure, those workouts traditionally enable players to bolster their draft status down the line and hone in on specific facets of their games to improve.
The rising junior guard did not receive an invitation to the NBA combine or the G League Elite Camp, but he did participate in Life Sports Agency's pro day at the Los Angeles Lakers' training facility, another NBA venue. For a player who will not lace up in the NBA this fall, Blackwell certainly loaded his offseason itinerary with professional basketball at the front of his mind.
Blackwell will return to Madison as the unquestioned No. 1 option for Greg Gard's group. The 6-foot-4 guard averaged 31.2 minutes, 15.8 points, 5.1 rebounds and 2.2 assists per game off 45% from the field and 32% from 3-point range as a sophomore during the 2024-25 slate, enough to earn an All-Big Ten honorable mention selection.
The guard played second fiddle to All-American wing John Tonje, who projects to land in the second round of the 2025 NBA draft, throughout his second season in Madison. Still, Blackwell recorded eight games of at least 20 points, including a pair of games with 30 points or more.
The Bloomfield Hills, Michigan, native will take the hardwood alongside transfers Nick Boyd, Austin Rapp and Andrew Rohde in the starting lineup, with rising junior forward Nolan Winter also returning to help lead the team. That starting unit projects to be one of the more formidable in the Big Ten.

Tanner Houck preparing for the long rehabilitation from Tommy John surgery
Tanner Houck had an 8.04 earned run average in nine starts for the Red Sox this season. Matthew J. Lee/Globe Staff Houck had non-surgical alternatives available, including platelet-rich plasma and stem-cell treatment, to try to fix his arm. But those would have merely been 'delaying the inevitable,' he said, so he opted for the operation. Advertisement 'This was the decision that I made, just for longevity of the career,' Houck, 29, said Sunday. 'I want to pitch for another 10 years, 10-plus years. Looking at it from a longevity standpoint, this is the road we decided to take. Get Starting Point A guide through the most important stories of the morning, delivered Monday through Friday. Enter Email Sign Up 'It's about trusting the day-to-day work. It's going to be long. It's going to be hard. But I'm ready for it. I've made peace with it myself. I had a lot of long conversations with my wife — early mornings, late nights talking about it.' Already, he has sought advice from his peers. 'They all said the same thing: You'll come back better from this,' he said. 'I'm ready to get it going.' Houck this week will go to the Dallas area, where Dr. Keith Meister will do the surgery. The rehab will be 12-14 months minimum, making Houck questionable to take the mound in 2026. Advertisement That marks the end of a lost year for Houck, who had an 8.04 ERA in nine starts. In mid-May, he landed on the injured list with a right flexor pronator strain in the forearm, which sometimes is a prelude to UCL issues. Houck sat out awhile, went on a rehab assignment, struggled, started to pitch better, and seemingly was on the brink of a return. But over the All-Star break, two months into his IL stint, he encountered more problems — in his hand and his tricep. The Sox sent him for another MRI, which showed significantly worse damage in his forearm/elbow — much worse than the inflammation from the previous test. Red Sox chief baseball officer Craig Breslow said it is hard to know whether the beginnings of the injury were what caused Houck problems when he pitched early in the season. 'A little bit surprised [with this outcome], just because it seemed like he was making progress through the rehab process,' Breslow said. 'It felt like we were turning the corner … It felt like we needed to make sure there was nothing we were missing. It turns out there was something pretty significant going on.' A year removed from being an All-Star, Houck is relegated to observer. He called it 'just a little time away.' 'It's unfortunate. It sucks,' he said. 'It's a fun team to watch, it's a fun team to be around. Just knowing I'm not going to be a part of it for the rest of the year is hard.' Advertisement Setback for Sandoval One instance of a Tommy John rehab not going so smoothly: Patrick Sandoval . Breslow said he does not expect Sandoval, who had surgery last summer, to pitch this season following a recent setback. Sandoval for now isn't throwing at all, though the Sox want him to fully ramp up and face batters before he goes into the offseason. 'Nothing out of the ordinary for a Tommy John rehab process, just a little bit of a delay as we've seen with a number of guys,' Breslow said. Similarly, manager Alex Cora said he is not confident Liam Hendriks (right hip injury) will make it back this season. Justin Slaten , working his way back from a nerve issue in his neck/right shoulder, was 'upbeat' Sunday after his first bullpen session Saturday, Cora said. 'Hard to put a timetable on it, just given the topsy-turvy nature of the recovery to date,' Breslow said. Down the depth chart In talking up the club's rotation depth, Breslow highlighted prospect David Sandlin — a righthander recently promoted to Triple A Worcester — as a candidate to pitch out of the major league bullpen down the stretch. 'Sandlin is a guy who comes to mind,' he said. 'It's really power stuff. Maybe with a simplified approach, he could come in and overwhelm hitters with the stuff. Those conversations are ongoing.' Sandlin's fastball averaged 95.3 miles per hour and maxed out at 98.1 with Worcester on Friday. Breslow on Bregman Breslow declined to comment on the state of Alex Bregman contract talks (if they exist). 'It's always great when somebody wants to be here,' he said. 'I think probably best to keep those conversations internal outside of being incredibly appreciative and excited about what he's brought here on the field and also off the field, what he's meant to some of the younger guys. When appropriate, we'll approach that' … Connor Wong , 0 for 2 with a sacrifice fly Sunday, will catch again Monday, per Cora. That will be his first time starting consecutive games since May 2-3. 'It's been a while, huh?' Wong said. Cora: 'It's important for his confidence and for his at-bats' … Kristian Campbell was out of Worcester's lineup after jamming his right thumb Saturday. Breslow said he is day-to-day … The Red Sox are 3-0 in games that start before noon. Advertisement Tim Healey can be reached at

Turang homers twice as the Brewers pound the Nationals 14-3 for a sweep of their season series
WASHINGTON (AP) — Brice Turang hit two two-run homers, and the Milwaukee Brewers completed their first season sweep of the Washington Nationals with a 14-3 victory on Sunday. Milwaukee set a club record for a three-game series with 56 hits. The Brewers scored 60 runs in their six wins over the Nationals this season. Christian Yelich went 2 for 3 and walked three times, giving the Brewers the lead for good with an RBI single in the first against rookie Brad Lord (2-6). Turang hit his seventh homer in the second, a 399-foot shot to right-center. He also went deep against Ryan Loutos in Milwaukee's seven-run seventh, belting a 396-foot shot to right. Joey Ortiz had four RBIs as the Brewers upped the majors' best record to 67-44. Caleb Durbin had two of Milwaukee's 16 hits. Milwaukee's Logan Henderson was called up from Triple-A Nashville to start in place of All-Star rookie Jacob Misiorowski, who was placed on the 15-day injured list with a left shin contusion. Henderson allowed one run and three hits in 4 1/3 innings. Key moment Ashby replaced Henderson after Jacob Young's RBI single made it 3-1 in the fifth. He struck out CJ Abrams and James Wood, ending the inning. Key stat Milwaukee also owns a 6-0 sweep of the Dodgers this season. ___

Noah Lyles wins record-tying U.S. men's 200m title; Melissa Jefferson-Wooden sweeps
Noah Lyles didn't have to race at the Toyota USA Track and Field Outdoor Championships, but he did and made some history anyway. Lyles, the Olympic 100m gold medalist, won a record-tying fifth U.S. men's 200m title, clocking 19.63 seconds, the world's best time in 2025, in Eugene, Oregon. Lyles tied the record number of U.S. men's 200m titles shared by Michael Johnson (1990-92, '95-96) and Ralph Metcalfe (1932-36). His last defeat in a U.S. 200m final was at the 2016 Olympic Trials when he was 18 years old. Athletes competing at nationals are vying for spots on September's World Championships team. But Lyles already had a bye onto the team for worlds in Tokyo in both the 100m and 200m as the defending world champion in each event. USATF OUTDOORS: Results Lyles will be joined on the 100m and 200m team at worlds by 200m runner-up Bednarek, who won the 100m at nationals on Friday in Lyles' absence. In the 200m final, Lyles overtook Bednarek in the final strides by four hundredths and looked over at Bednarek as he crossed the finish line. Bednarek then shoved Lyles in the back before they came to a stop. The two men then had a short chat and shook hands. 'I'm not going to say it out here, but we've got something to do and talk about,' Bednarek told Lewis Johnson on NBC Sports when asked about the look and shove. Bednarek is 2-13 all-time against Lyles in the 200m, though the two were the last two Olympic finals where Bednarek took silver and Lyles bronze. Also Sunday, Melissa Jefferson-Wooden became the first woman to sweep the 100m and 200m national titles since 2003 (Torri Edwards). Jefferson-Wooden, who ran a personal best 21.84, was followed by Anavia Battle (22.13) and Olympic 200m gold medalist Gabby Thomas. Thomas, who said she had a few setbacks this season, made the world team by one thousandth of a second over Olympic bronze medalist Brittany Brown. The 2019 World champion Donavan Brazier completed a comeback from nearly three years away from competition to win the 800m in a personal best 1:42.19. 'I always pictured this happening, but I don't know if it'd come true,' Brazier told Johnson on NBC Sports. Brazier was followed by 16-year-old Cooper Lutkenhaus, who ran 1:42.27, a U18 world record by 1.1 seconds. The rising Texas high school junior is set to become the youngest American to compete at a World Track and Field Championships, according to Olympic sports historian Bill Mallon of the OlyMADMen. Mary Cain (2013) and Allyson Felix (2003) previously raced at age 17. Olympic 1500m gold medalist Cole Hocker won the 5000m, one day after placing third in the 1500m, to hit his goal of making the world team in both events. Hocker is joined by Olympic 5000m bronze medalist Grant Fisher and American record holder Nico Young. Hocker would be the first American to race both the 1500m and 5000m at worlds since Bernard Lagat in 2009. In the 400m hurdles, 2016 Olympic gold medalist Dalilah Muhammad earned her fifth national title — and first since breaking the world record in 2019 — in what she has said will be her last season before retiring. Muhammad will lead the U.S. women's 400m hurdles team at worlds, along with Olympic silver medalist Anna Cockrell. Sydney McLaughlin-Levrone, the two-time Olympic gold medalist and current world record holder in the event, chose to race the flat 400m instead this summer. Olympic gold medalist Rai Benjamin won a sixth U.S. title in the men's 400m hurdles, breaking a record he shared with Edwin Moses, among others. Two-time Olympic gold medalist Valarie Allman threw 71.45 meters for a record seventh U.S. discus title and a 27th consecutive victory overall dating to 2023. Allman, who would have won Sunday's title with any of her six throws, will now bid to win a world title for the first time after previous silver and bronze medals. Roisin Willis made her first senior world team by winning the 800m, adding to her 2022 World Junior and 2025 NCAA titles in the event. Tokyo Olympic champion Athing Mu-Nikolayev previously missed the nine-woman final by one spot. Nick Zaccardi,
