Microsoft Confirms Windows 11 Update Causes Security Firewall Error

Forbes18 hours ago
Windows 11 uodate causes Firewall error messages, Microsoft has confirmed.
Microsoft Windows updates: you can't live without them, but living with them can be tough at times. When high-severity vulnerabilities are uncovered, such as CVE-2025-33073, which can lead to Windows system takeover, updating is a security no-brainer. When vulnerabilities are of the zero-day variety and already subject to ongoing attacks, the need to update is even more critical. The problem that Microsoft has, however, is a history of fumbled update issues that have led to mass confusion at best, and at worst, problems like the startup loop of death that prevent users from being able to use their Windows machines. So, when yet another Windows update problem emerges, the user base heaves yet another sigh of exasperation. Here's what you need to know about the Windows 11 firewall configuration error, erm, error.
Microsoft Windows Non-Security Update Leads To Misguided Security Concerns
Windows 11 users are experiencing issues with a Firewall configuration error when using Windows Firewall with Advanced Security, following the June 26 KB5060829 Windows update. One simply cannot ignore the irony of a non-security update leading to security concerns.
Microsoft has now confirmed that the issue is displayed within the Event Viewer under event 2024 for Windows Firewall With Advanced Security. The error appears, Microsoft said, 'as Config Read Failed with a message of More data is available.' This error is triggered every time the Windows device is restarted, Microsoft admitted.
The good news in this mess of Microsoft's own making, is that the error 'can be safely ignored,' according to the Seattle tech behemoth. As it does 'not reflect an issue with Windows Firewall.'
The Truth Behind Microsoft's Latest Windows Update Fumble
So, what is actually going on, beyond the obvious update faux pas? Microsoft's July 2 update, erm, update, explains this error as being 'related to a feature that is currently under development and not fully implemented.' Oh well, that's OK then, and doesn't display any lack of proper validation of update integrity before release at all. I mean, it's good to know that the issue does not have any impact on or to Windows processes and that, as Microsoft has said, it is 'working on a resolution and will provide an update in an upcoming release,' but wouldn't it be better if these things were discovered before the update is made available to one and all?
I have approached Microsoft for a statement.

New phone safety features can help kids. But they only work if parents set them up

Keeping kids safe online can be a full-time job for parents. While good communication between parents and children is key, moms and dads should set kids up for success by placing parental controls on devices. Apple has a new software update; coming in September, iOS 26 expands tools that can help in the effort. For parents whose children have an iPhone, they can now play a role in deciding who their kids can text through Messages. If children want to communicate with a new phone number, they will need to get permission from their parents. It's a one-tap approval method for mom or dad, but gives parents a heads up that someone new may be entering their kids' digital life. Kids will also be able to send a parental approval request to chat, follow or friend users in any third-party apps (not developed by Apple) as well. Child Accounts have the user's age-range information. Now parents can share those details with app developers while keeping the child's birth date private. If developers receive the age information, they may better provide age-appropriate experiences for those users. Moms and dads can decide whether they want their kids' age range information shared with all apps or only those they select. Children cannot decide how their age range information is shared unless their parents allow them to do so. Whether or not a young person's account was set up as a Child Account, these age-appropriate protections will be enabled for all users 13 to 17. Web content filters, age ratings and Communication Safety will all be enacted on those accounts. Utah was the first state in the country to pass a bill requiring app stores to verify kids' ages. The state's App Store Accountability Act requires app stores — not individual apps — to seek parental consent before allowing minors to download apps. Each app on the App Store already shows its age rating based on information provided by developers. For parents, that's often a first check to help them decide whether the app would be appropriate for their child to download. Right now, those ratings are for ages 4+, 9+, 12+ and 17+. That leaves a big gap for teenagers. What may be appropriate for a 13 year old may not be for a 16 year old. Apple is helping by expanding age ratings by the end of the year, when you will see additional guidance for 4+ and 9+, but then 13+, 16+ and 18+. Since these age ratings are also used for parental control features like Screen Time and Ask to Buy, these differentiations will likely be helpful for many parents. Communication Safety is a feature that aims to stop kids from seeing nudity. If something explicit is detected in a photo or video a child receives or is trying to send, the image will be blurred. In the upcoming iOS 26 update, that capability will also apply to FaceTime. Apple says it will 'intervene' when nudity is detected in FaceTime video calls and will also blur out any nudity in Shared Albums in Photos. How do Android phones stack up against these parental controls? For those under 18, Google Messages triggers a sensitive content warning when it detects images that contain nudity. That prompts an Android device to blur those images and give helpful resources to users who receive that type of content. Parents can control the feature through Family Link for Supervised users. It's off by default for adults and unsupervised teen accounts, but users can turn it on in settings. This feature does not work for videos. Google Meet has an Acceptable Use Policy that prohibits nudity but only has the blurring capability in Messages. For now, apps in the Google Play Store follow the age ratings from the International Age Rating Coalition which are similar to those Apple has favored in the past. They break age categories into 3+, 7+, 12+, 16+ and 18+. When it comes to texting, parents of teens with Android phones can turn on 'Only allow calls and texts from phone contacts:' through Family Link. This blocks incoming texts from unknown numbers, but not outgoing ones. And worth noting: Android allows the incoming calls and text to go through if a child has reached out to that number within the past month. Giving parents more options to monitor how their kids spend time online is helpful. But while these companies grant the ability to have parental controls, they only work if moms and dads actually set them up. If parents haven't yet set up monitoring through Family Share for Apple or Family Link for Google, it's never too late to start.

Microsoft Laying Off Up To 9,000 Employees, Xbox Cancels ‘Perfect Dark', Gamers React

Source: picture alliance / Getty / Microsoft / Xbox / Phil Spencer Wednesday was a rough one for Microsoft and Team Xbox. The Seattle Times reports that Microsoft is giving about 9,100, or about 4 percent, of its workforce pink slips. According to the report, the Xbox division, aka Microsoft Gaming, will be hit the hardest as a result of these layoffs, but the exact number remains unknown. In a message to the team, Xbox head Phil Spencer said to the team, 'To position Gaming for enduring success and allow us to focus on strategic growth areas, we will end or decrease work in certain areas of the business and follow Microsoft's lead in removing layers of management to increase agility and effectiveness.' The sad news also means that these layoffs will impact games. According to Bloomberg , the Microsoft-owned King division, the maker of the wildly popular Candy Crush mobile game franchise, is laying off 10 percent of its employees, or approximately 200 people. Zenimax also confirmed it was laying off employees. Turn 10, the studio behind the Forza Motorsport franchise, is laying off more than 70 employees . The long-talked-about Perfect Dark game from the now-shuttered studio The Initiative and Crystal Dynamics, along with Everwild , has been canceled. Perfect Dark was just revealed during the Xbox Games Showcase in 2024, so that means there's a possibility that more games shown during that event could be put on ice by Microsoft. This latest round of layoffs follows Microsoft's layoffs of more than 6,000 employees less than two months ago, which were subsequently supplemented by an additional 305 reductions in early June. Phil Spencer's entire memo to the team, speaking about the recent round of layoffs, reads: Today we are sharing decisions that will impact colleagues across our organization. To position Gaming for enduring success and allow us to focus on strategic growth areas, we will end or decrease work in certain areas of the business and follow Microsoft's lead in removing layers of management to increase agility and effectiveness. Out of respect for those impacted today, the specifics of today's notifications and any organizational shifts will be shared by your team leaders in the coming days. I recognize that these changes come at a time when we have more players, games, and gaming hours than ever before. Our platform, hardware, and game roadmap have never looked stronger. The success we're seeing currently is based on tough decisions we've made previously. We must make choices now for continued success in future years and a key part of that strategy is the discipline to prioritize the strongest opportunities. We will protect what is thriving and concentrate effort on areas with the greatest potential, while delivering on the expectations the company has for our business. This focused approach means we can deliver exceptional games and experiences for players for generations to come. Prioritizing our opportunities is essential, but that does not lessen the significance of this moment. Simply put, we would not be where we are today without the time, energy, and creativity of those whose roles are impacted. These decisions are not a reflection of the talent, creativity, and dedication of the people involved. Our momentum is not accidental—it is the result of years of dedicated effort from our teams. HR is working directly with impacted employees to provide severance plan benefits (aligned with local laws), including pay, healthcare coverage, and job placement resources to support their transition. Employees whose roles were eliminated are encouraged to explore open positions across Microsoft Gaming, where their applications will be given priority review. Thank you to everyone who has shaped our culture, our products, and our community. We will move forward with deep appreciation and respect for all who have contributed to this journey. Spotify Jam comes to Android Auto so your whole car can DJ

Google TL;DR Spotify's latest Android Auto update brings the Jam feature to car displays, letting friends join in and contribute music. The feature allows passengers to join a shared music queue by scanning a QR code on the in-car screen. The latest update for Spotify on Android Auto also improves offline listening and adds a floating search button for easier access. Spotify's Android Auto app just got an important upgrade, adding the popular Jam feature to the in-car experience. Jam allows multiple Spotify users to listen together in real time and is now available directly from Spotify's Now Playing screen on Android Auto. When music is playing, the Android Auto display shows a QR code that passengers can scan to join the Jam session and add tracks to the shared queue. The driver acts as the host and retains control of the Jam session, with the ability to remove any contributors at any time. This marks the first time Spotify Jam is available on a car interface. Spotify previously made Jam available to desktop users. It's also important to note that you need to be a Spotify Premium subscriber to start or host a Jam. However, free users can join and add songs to the Jam. Google announced the Android Auto redesign for Spotify as part of its new in-car experiences at I/O 2025, and confirmed the feature will also arrive on vehicles with Google built-in at a later stage. Apart from Jam, the redesigned Spotify app on Android Auto also brings some other enhancements, including a more prominent 'Downloads' section to make offline playback easier, especially useful when driving through areas with poor connectivity. There's also a new floating Search shortcut that gives users quicker access to Spotify's search interface. All of these features are reportedly (via 9to5Google) part of Spotify's latest update — version 9.0.58.596 — which rolled out to Android users just a few days ago. Got a tip? Talk to us!
