Reuters18-07-2025
July 18 - The Colorado Rockies reinstated shortstop Ezequiel Tovar from the injured list Friday, while second baseman Thairo Estrada was placed on the IL with a sprained left thumb.
The Rockies announced Friday that Estrada's IL move was officially made on Monday and was retroactive to last Friday.
Tovar, 23, last played June 2 before coming away with a strained oblique. He was batting. 258 with three home runs and 10 RBIs in 32 games and is a .260 career hitter with 45 home runs and 163 RBIs in 351 games over four seasons with Colorado.
The Rockies were set to resume play after the All-Star break on Friday at home against the Minnesota Twins and had Tovar in the starting lineup batting fifth.
Estrada, 29, was batting .284 with two home runs and 18 RBIs over 29 games. In seven major league seasons, including the previous four with the San Francisco Giants, Estrada is a career .254 hitter with 50 home runs and 213 RBIs.

With Juan Soto in question, Mets aim to avert sweep by Padres

July 30 - After flying into San Diego with a seven-game winning streak, the New York Mets hope to fly home Wednesday with a win that would avoid a series sweep by the Padres. And the Mets might have to go about it without one of their sluggers in the lineup. Right fielder Juan Soto left Tuesday night's 7-1 loss to San Diego before the bottom of the fourth after fouling a pitch off his left foot during his at-bat in the top of the inning. Soto completed the at-bat and grounded out to second but was lifted by manager Carlos Mendoza when New York went out for defense. "It was a tough moment," Soto said of the injury. "I tried to run and push (off it) and couldn't do it. We decided not to keep pushing." Soto and the Mets may have gotten a break, and not the one that would sideline him. X-rays came back negative, according to Soto and Mendoza, although Soto's status for Wednesday afternoon's game isn't known. Pressed by reporters after the game, Soto said he wasn't feeling "anything." "We just got to get the swelling down," he said. Soto is hitting .248 with 25 homers and 62 RBIs in his first season with the Mets. His .382 on-base percentage in tied for fifth in the National League. An extended absence for Soto could be problematic for an offense that isn't getting much lately from stars such as Francisco Lindor and Pete Alonso. Lindor is 8 for his last 55 and Alonso is worse at 5-for-57. Right-hander Clay Holmes (9-5, 3.40 ERA) will take the mound for the Mets on Wednesday, looking for the first 10-win season of his career. He is coming off an 8-1 win over the San Francisco Giants on Friday after he allowed one run on six hits in five innings. He is 1-0 with a 3.38 ERA in eight relief appearances lifetime against San Diego. The Padres will counter with right-hander Yu Darvish (0-3, 9.18), who has struggled since returning from the injured list on July 7. Darvish was hammered Thursday during a 9-7 loss in St. Louis, permitting eight runs on eight hits in 3 2/3 innings with two walks and three strikeouts. He is 5-1 with a 3.23 ERA in 10 career starts against New York. But San Diego enters Wednesday with a four-game winning streak that's seen its offense score 26 runs, finally getting production from the bottom of the lineup. Catcher Elias Diaz walked off the Mets on Monday night and slashed a two-run double Tuesday night to start a five-run seventh inning, while Jose Iglesias added two hits and a walk. "Guys are doing the little things, and they are leading to the big things," Padres manager Mike Shildt said. "We've been able to add on. ... We've got a lot in our bag right now." --Field Level Media

Super Bowl contenders Baltimore Ravens get bad news after key man hurt in practice

After going down in practice on Tuesday afternoon, Baltimore Ravens tight end Isaiah Likely now faces a race against time to be ready for Week One after his diagnosis of a small foot fracture has been revealed. During the last rep of the team's training-camp practice on Tuesday during a 1-on-1 drill, Likely went down and was carted off the field, being taken to the locker room while putting little weight on his leg. Now with the regular season looming at the beginning of September, Likely has a few weeks to nurse his foot back to full strength to not give the Ravens their first regular-season setback before the year's first official snap, per ESPN. After Tuesday's practice ended, Ravens head coach John Harbaugh told reporters that Likely will be sidelined for a few weeks to recover. Baltimore's regular-season opener against the Buffalo Bills, in a possible playoff preview, is slated for September 7. That's more than five weeks away, making the injury more severe than the longtime Ravens' boss wanted for a key offensive cog.

Cubs turn to Shota Imanaga in finale vs. Brewers

July 30 - Left-hander Shota Imanaga will try to help the visiting Chicago Cubs avoid a sweep of their three-game series against division rival Milwaukee on Wednesday afternoon. Imanaga (7-4, 3.12 ERA) will start the contest opposite Milwaukee right-hander Freddy Peralta (12-4, 2.81). The Brewers followed an 8-4 victory over the Cubs in the series opener on Monday with a 9-3 win Tuesday. Andrew Vaughn hit a grand slam and drove in a career-high six runs on Tuesday, and Quinn Priester threw 5 2/3 innings to win his ninth consecutive decision. By taking the first two contests of the series, first-place Milwaukee moved two games ahead of Chicago in the National League Central and is a season-high 21 games above .500. "Fortunately, we play these guys again tomorrow and then again at home in a couple weeks," Cubs second baseman Nico Hoerner said Tuesday. "There's plenty of opportunities, but it's on us to seize them." Imanaga missed 1 1/2 months of the season with a left hamstring strain and is 4-2 in six starts since leaving the injured list in late June. He is coming off his worst start of the season, allowing seven runs on 12 hits -- including three homers -- in three innings in a 12-5 loss to the Chicago White Sox on Friday. Imanaga has lost his only two career starts versus Milwaukee, allowing nine runs on 12 hits in 10 innings. He lost to Peralta and the Brewers on May 4, giving up two runs on four hits in 5 2/3 innings of a 4-0 setback. Cubs left fielder Ian Happ came out of Tuesday's game in the eighth inning after fouling a pitch off his left shin. X-rays were negative, Happ said afterward, adding that he left the game because he felt light-headed. His status for Wednesday was uncertain, but the Cubs are off Thursday before a weekend series versus Baltimore. Peralta is 6-0 with a 3.26 ERA over his last seven starts and has not lost since June 3, a span of nine outings. In his most recent effort, he allowed one run in five innings but did not get the decision in a 5-1 loss at Miami on Friday. Peralta is 8-2 with a 3.07 ERA in 20 career games (15 starts) against the Cubs. He is 2-0 with a 2.45 ERA in two starts versus them this season, allowing three earned runs in 11 innings. Vaughn was acquired from the White Sox in mid-June for pitcher Aaron Civale. Vaughn was called up from Triple-A Nashville earlier this month when first baseman Rhys Hoskins was injured. Vaughn had five homers and 19 RBIs in 48 games with the White Sox. He has five homers and 21 RBIs in 15 games with the Brewers, hitting .375 over that span. "It's a special group here right now," Vaughn said. "We're playing really good baseball. It's fun to be a part of it. ... Helping the team win any way I can, and winning's fun. And we've been doing it a lot. So got to keep it going." Jackson Chourio was removed from Tuesday's game after a leadoff triple in the fifth inning with a right hamstring spasm. The Brewers did not have an update on his status following the contest. --Field Level Media
