Evans fires home four in Connah's Quay Cobras triumph
After the rigours of the Summer Classic Cup campaign in recent weeks, this was a 'development' game aimed at giving wider squad members some extra ice time and it proved to be close throughout and highly entertaining to watch.
The match saw a Connah's Quay debut for Jaakko Tulkki and a first full game for Tom Wlodarczyk. The occasion had a nice family atmosphere with a number of junior mascots on the ice before and after the game.
Cobras took the lead on six minutes with a goal from Sam Hunt but the Buccaneers equalised on 13 minutes. Former Dragons 2 and Bradford Bulldogs league player Gez Evans edged the home side back in front with just 90 seconds left on the clock to hand the Cobras a narrow 2-1 lead at the first period break.
Cobras' player-coach Emma Dutton fired the hosts further ahead with a goal just 30 seconds after the restart and a second goal from Evans a minute after that saw the lead stretched out to 4-1.
Blackburn pulled a goal back on 23 minutes and two more strikes saw them draw level at 4-4. A hat-trick goal from Evans on 36 minutes put Cobras' noses back in front and they led 5-4 at the second interval.
A second goal for Dutton on 42 minutes doubled the Cobras advantage early in the third period but Blackburn hit back again on 55 minutes to set up a nail-biting finale.
Gez Evans fired in his fourth goal of the game to restore Cobras' two-goal cushion on 57 minutes but the Buccaneers kept pushing forward, trying to salvage something from the game.
Andy Teece and Theo Coulson split the netminding duties for the Cobras, playing half the game each, and Coulson was called upon to make a number of impressive saves to keep the Blackburn attack at bay in the closing stages.
There was no more goal action, however, and the game finished 7-5 to the Cobras – with Coulson (pictured above) being named MVP for his performance.
Connah's Quay are back on the cup trail for their next game when they face a tricky trip away to last year's champions Don Valley Vikings in Sheffield on June 21 (8pm face-off). They then finish off their qualifying group matches with a game at Whitley Bay on August 2.

Kyle Schwarber, Phillies shoot for another win over Yankees
July 26 - Kyle Schwarber earned MVP honors for hitting three homers in the swing-off at the All-Star Game. In the first week since the All-Star break, Schwarber is still rolling, and the slugger will attempt to continue his power surge Saturday afternoon when the Philadelphia Phillies visit the New York Yankees. Schwarber hit a pair of two-run homers Friday night as Philadelphia opened the three-game series with an 12-5 victory. Schwarber notched his 35th and 36th homers by hitting a tying shot in the fifth off New York rookie Will Warren and a drive off Ian Hamilton in the eighth. Schwarber finished with his second multi-homer game of the year, and he has six homers in seven games since the break. It was also his fourth three-hit game this season. Schwarber is 10-for-29 (.345) since the break and reached 1,000 career hits with his first homer of the Friday game. "I don't know where we'd be without him," Philadelphia manager Rob Thomson said. "Comes up with big hit after big hit after big hit. It's just -- it's amazing." The Phillies also got a tiebreaking three-run homer from J.T. Realmuto in the seventh inning. The catcher is batting .388 (26-for-67) in his past 16 games. The Yankees are 3-6 in their past nine games since Cody Bellinger hit three homers in an 11-0 rout of the Chicago Cubs on July 11. New York committed two more errors on Friday, giving the team nine in the past four games. Paul Goldschmidt committed a throwing error at first base two pitches before Luke Weaver allowed Realmuto's homer. Bellinger, Austin Wells, Giancarlo Stanton and Anthony Volpe homered, but the Yankees saw their bullpen allow 10 runs in four innings. The New York pitching staff owns a major-league-worst 6.20 ERA in July. "The easy thing is to just play better," Goldschmidt said. "Mistakes like I made tonight. Other mistakes we've made, we've got to cut those down. Those are conversations that we're having and trying to do, but we've made a few too many mistakes." The Yankees hope to improve their defense when Ryan McMahon debuts at third base after being acquired from the Colorado Rockies. Ranger Suarez (7-4, 2.66 ERA), who is 0-2 with a 5.62 ERA in his past three starts, will start for the Phillies on Saturday. Suarez allowed three runs or fewer in 12 consecutive starts before giving up six runs on eight hits in 4 1/3 innings during an 8-2 home loss to the Los Angeles Angels on Sunday. Suarez is 0-1 with a 4.50 ERA in two career appearances against the Yankees, both in relief in 2021. Schwarber is 3-for-14 (.214) off New York's scheduled Saturday starter, Marcus Stroman (2-1, 5.64). Stroman is 2-0 with a 3.00 ERA in four starts since returning from a two-month absence caused by left knee inflammation. Stroman produced his best outing of the year when he allowed one run on five hits in a season-high six innings during a 4-2 win at Atlanta on Sunday. He threw a season-high 95 pitches. Stroman is 6-4 with a 2.26 ERA in 13 appearances (11 starts) against Philadelphia, having limited the Phillies to two runs or fewer 11 times. --Field Level Media

Fletcher proud to be named Scotland's Summer Series MVP
Scotland's Poppy Fletcher was bursting with pride at being named her country's MVP for the recent Six Nations Women's Summer Series. The 21-year-old was ever-present for Scotland during the competition in Caerphilly, demonstrating her prowess in the front row time and again during games against Wales, England and Ireland. However, the award came as a surprise to Fletcher, with the prop quickly hailing the impacts of other players who she felt were equally deserving of the honour. 'I didn't really expect it at all,' said Fletcher, who plays for the University of Edinburgh and is in her second year studying applied sports science. 'Being up against the likes of Ceitidh Ainsworth, who played out of her skin and controls the game, and Poppy Mellanby, who is a shining star and incredible, so to win is very exciting. '[This award] is so important because it's voted for by the management, players and the team around you. I think that makes it even more special and it's really lovely to hear.' This has been the second incarnation of the Women's Summer Series, a tournament designed to give U20s players the opportunity to play more competitive rugby to help with their development, with the first edition being played in Italy in 2024, And despite results not going Scotland's way during their time in South Wales, losing all three of their encounters, Fletcher believes the age-group competition is a great platform for players to showcase their skills. 🏴 Scotland Women's U20s head coach Louise Dalgliesh is proud of her players' development throughout the 2025 Six Nations Women's Summer Series despite failing to win any of their three games. Read more ➡️ #U6NSummerSeries — Six Nations Under-20s (@SixNationsU20) July 21, 2025 'The Summer Series is crazy important, especially representing your country at age grade,' she continued. "We've got the Celtic Challenge, but having the 20s means younger girls can play with those girls that have played in the Celtic Challenge and so it's a nice in that everyone can play. 'And this competition offers rugby on an international stage, so it's pretty cool to be able to put out your best performances where people can see.' With the Women's Rugby Cup set to kick-off in Sunderland next month, Fletcher believes the age-grade tournament was the perfect start to an important summer of women's rugby. Fletcher said: 'It's a massive summer of women's sport and it's so exciting. The World Cup is going to be so good, and I think a lot of girls could have a great chance of getting into those World Cup squads yet to be announced. 'And although some squads have already been named, players can get called up for any reason. I think a lot of girls have put in performances [at the Women's Summer Series] that mean they could be on the side lines ready to be picked.' Fletcher also reflected that her experience of the tournament will stand her in good stead for the future as she looks to kick-on with her career. '[Playing in the Women's Summer Series] will help me for sure,' she added. 'I've played against some big names during it. I remember the England game, when I was coming out and I was like, 'Oh my God, I'm about to be scrumming down against Grace Clifford, she's been in Red Roses squads before'. 'Playing U20s with some of those types of faces is pretty insane. I'll massively look back at this as it was the best experience ever.'

New York Jets quarterback Justin Fields carted off with toe injury at camp
New York Jets quarterback Justin Fields was carted from the practice field Thursday morning with a toe injury. Fields threw an incomplete pass to Jeremy Ruckert on his fifth play of team drills when he went down. The quarterback, in his first season with the Jets, sat on the grass for a few moments before getting up and limping to the sideline while helped by a trainer. Coach Aaron Glenn said the injury was to Fields' right foot, but had no immediate information on the nature or severity. 'I know it was a quick throw, so I'm assuming someone stepped on his toe,' Glenn said after the Jets' second practice of training camp. 'It had to be because of the nature of the call that we had as far as offensive play call. I want to look at the tape and be sure.' Fields spent a few minutes in the injury tent on the sideline as trainers examined him before a cart came out to transport him into the facility. Fields sat in the passenger seat next to the driver in the cart and then got up under his own power before stepping inside to be further evaluated. Glenn stopped the team period after Fields was hurt and the Jets ran special teams drills. 'When anybody goes down, there's a lump in my throat,' Glenn said. 'Listen, I hate injuries for any player, but the thing is I want to make sure that I understand exactly what the injury is before I move forward on my thought process.' Fields signed a two-year, $40m contract as a free agent in March after playing last season in Pittsburgh and is expected to be New York's starter this season. Veteran Tyrod Taylor, the team's oldest player who turns 36 next month, is the backup and replaced Fields in team drills. 'I think the most important part is, if anything does happen to Justin, I don't think there's any drop-off as far as what we want to do when it comes to play calls,' Glenn said. 'Very similar when you talk about skill set, so that was like enticing for us. And then the leadership ability ... you could just tell the players really gravitate to him. When he says something, everybody really listens, even the coaching staff. He's been around this league a long time. He knows what it takes to win, and he's a really good person. So, we're all excited to have that guy here. 'Listen, Justin is who he is and if something happens to him, we've got Tyrod and we're ready to go.' New York also has Adrian Martinez, the 2024 United Football League MVP, and rookie Brady Cook on its roster, but neither has thrown a pass in an NFL game. Glenn noted that Martinez was in camp with the Lions in 2023, so he has some familiarity with the offense that the Jets are running with Tanner Engstrand, Detroit's former passing game coordinator. But if Fields is sidelined for a significant amount of time, the Jets could be in the market for an experienced quarterback. The news of Fields' injury sent Jets fans into a frenzy on social media, with many recalling how Aaron Rodgers' torn achilles tendon in the team's opening game in 2023 sunk their Super Bowl hopes and how Zach Wilson missed time early in the 2022 season with a knee injury. Glenn urged fans to remain calm because 'I've been there and done that' – referring to how he adjusted to various injuries in Detroit last season as the Lions' defensive coordinator – and it's still early in training camp. 'I understand how this league is and I understand how social media starts to take over and everybody starts to panic,' Glenn said. 'The one thing I would say is, listen, we have a number of men in that locker room that want to win. And we have a number of men in the locker room that's learning how to win and it's my job to make sure that I push that over the edge. And that's my plan.'
