Youth sports take centre stage in Vanderbijlpark

VANDERBIJLPARK — One of South Africa's biggest school sports festivals is back — and bigger than ever. From July 1 to 5, the VUT Isak Steyl Stadium will host Rhino Week 2025, celebrating its 10th anniversary with record-breaking participation and national reach. What began in 2015 with just 12 rugby and 18 netball teams has grown into a major national event. This year, more than 90 schools will compete in rugby, netball, and hockey games, with more than 3 000 players expected to take part, making it one of the largest school sports festivals in South Africa. Organised by Rhino Youth Sport Development (formerly Prestige Jeugsport), Rhino Week has become a key date on the school sports calendar. The tournament provides a competitive and inclusive platform for learners from across the country, including teams from Namibia, KwaZulu-Natal, Mpumalanga, North West, Free State, and Gauteng. 'Our mission has always been to create opportunities for all children to participate, regardless of their background or ability to pay,' says founder Dries van Heerden. 'This isn't just a sports week, it's a dream week.' Now under the leadership of new chairperson Martin van Wyngaardt, the tournament continues to grow in stature and professionalism, with support from seasoned organisers including Gert Tsoetsi (Tournament Director) and Hennie van Vuuren (Regional Representative). In addition to its sporting impact, Rhino Week contributes significantly to the local economy. Despite limited sponsorship, the organisers proudly maintain a no-player-turned-away policy, with around 20% of athletes receiving financial support. The event also has growing visibility on platforms like SuperSport and social media. As Rhino Week celebrates a decade of youth development through sport, it remains committed to building a stronger, more inclusive future one match at a time. Ashwell Prince: Winning as a diverse team means everything to South Africa

REAL SUCCESS Ashwell Prince celebrated South Africa's World Test Championship win, highlighting the profound significance of diversity and unity in the team's historic success. Picture: Michael Sherman/IOL Image: Michael Sherman/IOL The Proteas victory in the World Test Championship (WTC) as a truly diverse team was the most special moment of South Africa batting coach Ashwell Prince's career. That's quite a statement for the gritty left-handed batsman that played 119 games for South Africa across all three formats. The majority of those matches came in the 66 Tests where Prince scored 11 centuries and as many 50s. Since transitioning into coaching, harnessing all the available talent became one of the keys for Prince. That's why when the Proteas beat Australia in the WTC final at the home of Lord's led by Temba Bavuma and featuring Kagiso Rabada, Lungi Ngidi and Keshav Maharaj it was a moment of unadulterated pride for Prince. And it's exactly something that I mentioned to my team back then that I want to achieve. But if you achieve that at provincial level or franchise level, the Titans are not going to be happy about that. I'm talking about winning as a diverse team,' said Prince. 'Other provinces won't be happy about that because that's one province winning. But when you achieve that as the country, this is exactly what it is about. And so, to have the opportunity to be a part of that, it's truly special. It's a special occasion for all of us and for the country.' As the batting coach, it would be expected that Prince's role would always be quite technical for his willow warriors, but he explained how his strategy for their run-chase in the fourth innings was purely a mental approach.

Evans fires home four in Connah's Quay Cobras triumph

The cracking Cobras were able to run out 7-5 victors in the encounter at Deeside Leisure Centre. After the rigours of the Summer Classic Cup campaign in recent weeks, this was a 'development' game aimed at giving wider squad members some extra ice time and it proved to be close throughout and highly entertaining to watch. The match saw a Connah's Quay debut for Jaakko Tulkki and a first full game for Tom Wlodarczyk. The occasion had a nice family atmosphere with a number of junior mascots on the ice before and after the game. Cobras took the lead on six minutes with a goal from Sam Hunt but the Buccaneers equalised on 13 minutes. Former Dragons 2 and Bradford Bulldogs league player Gez Evans edged the home side back in front with just 90 seconds left on the clock to hand the Cobras a narrow 2-1 lead at the first period break. Cobras' player-coach Emma Dutton fired the hosts further ahead with a goal just 30 seconds after the restart and a second goal from Evans a minute after that saw the lead stretched out to 4-1. Blackburn pulled a goal back on 23 minutes and two more strikes saw them draw level at 4-4. A hat-trick goal from Evans on 36 minutes put Cobras' noses back in front and they led 5-4 at the second interval. A second goal for Dutton on 42 minutes doubled the Cobras advantage early in the third period but Blackburn hit back again on 55 minutes to set up a nail-biting finale. Gez Evans fired in his fourth goal of the game to restore Cobras' two-goal cushion on 57 minutes but the Buccaneers kept pushing forward, trying to salvage something from the game. Andy Teece and Theo Coulson split the netminding duties for the Cobras, playing half the game each, and Coulson was called upon to make a number of impressive saves to keep the Blackburn attack at bay in the closing stages. There was no more goal action, however, and the game finished 7-5 to the Cobras – with Coulson (pictured above) being named MVP for his performance. Connah's Quay are back on the cup trail for their next game when they face a tricky trip away to last year's champions Don Valley Vikings in Sheffield on June 21 (8pm face-off). They then finish off their qualifying group matches with a game at Whitley Bay on August 2.

Shelby Cobra 427 to Celebrate 60 Years of Performance at Pebble Beach Concours d'Elegance

Lineage from First Production Cobra to Last 427 Will Be Exhibited PEBBLE BEACH, Calif., May 14, 2025 /PRNewswire/ -- One of the most intimidating cars of its era, the Shelby Cobra 427, marks its 60th anniversary this year. Named for the 427-cubic-inch Ford engine that powered it to dominate SCCA racing and set a performance benchmark that stood for years, the "big block Cobra" earned iconic status from the day it was introduced. To celebrate this anniversary, a Shelby Cobra class will take to the show field at this year's Pebble Beach Concours d'Elegance on August 17. "Carroll had a strong personal connection to Pebble Beach, racing and winning here in the 1950s and later sharing his cars at the Concours, so we are honored to feature his Cobras this year," said Concours Chairman Sandra Button. "The design, performance, and historic wins of these iconic race cars highlight the legendary pairing of Carroll and Shelby American with AC Cars and Ford Motor Company." Carroll Shelby, an automotive legend, is popularly known for his groundbreaking work with high-performance sports cars, such as the Le Mans-winning Ford GT40, but he first made his mark as a race driver, winning numerous races, including the last Pebble Beach Road Race, triumphing at Le Mans and competing in Formula 1. The Shelby Cobra came into being in 1962, pairing an AC Ace chassis with a Ford 260-cubic-inch V8 that was replaced by the larger 289 engine. The ultimate iteration, the Shelby Cobra 427 — with a new chassis, coil suspension, and powerful 427-cubic-inch engine — was introduced in 1965. "Ford's 'Total Performance' era of the 1960s was epic, equaled only today with the company's global motorsport program," stated Edsel B. Ford II. "Carroll Shelby was vital to our dominance in the sixties and his 427 Cobra put an exclamation point on that success! I am delighted that these iconic cars will be celebrated on this anniversary year." Four versions of the 427 Cobra were produced and will be showcased — "Comp" (competition), S/C (semi-competition), Street and Narrow Hip — in addition to the first and last production Cobras. "The Shelby Cobra remains an automotive icon even 60 years after its introduction," said Aaron Shelby, grandson of Carroll Shelby and board member of Carroll Shelby International. "Few cars have achieved the fame and staying power of the Shelby Cobra. Not only does it represent performance, this sportscar represents American ingenuity! Simple but effective, it was created with grit and determination." The Pebble Beach Concours will also marque the 75th anniversary of Formula 1, the centennials of Chrysler, Invicta, Moretti and the Rolls-Royce Phantom and will celebrate the creations of Virgil Exner. Lazzarino Sport Prototipo Was the Ferrari of Argentina

You may have a Ferarri 250 GT California Spyder, a Maserati Birdcage, and a couple of Cobras, but you don't have a Lazzarino Sport Prototipo. Well, now's your chance. One of them—maybe the only one left, who knows?—is for sale at a dealership called Throttlestop in Elkhart Lake, Wisconsin, less than three miles from Road America. Wait, a what? Carrozzeria Lazzarino was an Italian coachbuilding shop in Buenos Aires, Argentina founded by Italian immigrant Bautista 'Tino' Lazzarino, according to an article in Hemmings last year. The teenaged Bautisto had moved to Argentina with his family in 1927. When they arrived, they opened an auto shop and patriarch Juan Lazzarino, Bautista's father, taught young Tino the art of making custom bodies, a skill the father had learned in their native Turin. Young Tino's big break came when he rebodied a Packard for Cardinal Pacelli—soon to be Pope Pius XII—when His Eminence visited Argentina for the 1934 Eucharistic Congress. It was good publicity, and soon Bautista the younger was making aerodynamic bodies that transformed the many large American cars of the day into race cars. By 1952 he had advanced to making complete cars, this one here—possibly—being his best example. 'The 1952 Lazzarino Sports Prototipo is a cornerstone of Argentina's motorsport heritage, embodying the fearless and daring spirit of 1950s racing culture in Buenos Aires and beyond,' reads the breathless sales copy at 'It was a time of bold risk-takers—both on the track and behind the scenes—who gathered from around the world to battle for supremacy.' Remember, Fangio was an Argentine, and this car was said to have raced in the same events as the five-time world champion. 'Built with the ambition of elevating Argentina's global racing reputation, the Lazz went head-to-head with Europe's finest competition cars, often under the watchful eye of President Juan Perón. Frequently mistaken for a Ferrari, it shares visual cues with the Ferrari 375 MM and 500 Mondial, yet its conception predates both. The visionary Lazzarino coachbuilding family was ahead of its time, creating innovative, handcrafted automobiles—none more significant than this singular creation.' It does look cool. This one was commissioned by the president of Ford of Argentina, and was thus originally equipped with a Ford flathead V8. Later it had a Chrysler slant six. But it's back with the flathead now. From its creation it was raced. Throttlestop lists its provenance: Winner of the Gran Jornada Automovilística 'Presidente Perón' (August 1954)—Sponsored by the Argentine Association of Race Car Drivers and supervised by the Argentina Automobile Sports Commission, as documented by automotive historian John Gunnell. Competed extensively throughout Argentina and South America during the 1950s and 1960s. Maintained in one-family ownership for 30 years in Argentina. Participated in notable international events, including:* 4,200-mile Pan-American Rally ('The Great Race'), Philadelphia to San Francisco* Mount Washington Hill Climb, 'Climb to the Clouds' (2005)* Bridgehampton Road Rally (2006) Throttlestop describes it as being in 'Exceptional & Authentic Condition!' saying it has a 'Superb restoration to its original racing configuration and Certified for authenticity via Declaración Jurada by the President of the Cámara Argentina de Comerciantes de Vehículos Antiguos, confirming it retains its original manufacturing characteristics.' It's also FIA-certified as a historic race car, meaning it's eligible to compete in historic races like the Mille Miglia. It's done well on the concours circuit, too, Throttlestop noting that it was: Commissioned by Gucci for a series of advertisements featuring actor James Franco. Displayed at:* Amelia Island in 2012 and 2024* The Quail Motorsports Gathering in 2012* Nationwide Concours d'Elegance, Elkhart Lake in 2016* Milwaukee Concours d'Elegance 2016*The Amelia Eight Flags Road Tour 2024 But no one knows about it. It doesn't show up at all in either of my last two Classic Car Auction Yearbooks between entries for Lasalle and Lexus. shows two previous sale prices listed at $130,200 in 2011 and $135,000 in 2014. Throttlestop is now asking $349,900. Is that a lot? It does have a 'Superb Restoration,' remember. Most people will think it's a Ferrari, and that may be fine. But you and I will know. If I had 350k I'd buy it. How about if you buy it and let me drive it? I'll write a story about it, adding to its provenance! 'Driven by famous Autoweek author and fearless test driver…'
