New transit system launches

Winnipeg's new bus network is now in effect, with the first bus on the Primary Transit Network departing Portage Avenue at Spence Street just after 5:30 a.m. Sunday.
The new spine-and-feeder transit model means most bus routes have changed with this overhaul to the city's transit system, and teams of Winnipeg Transit staff are set to hit the streets in high-bus-traffic areas to help transit users navigate the changes.
Users can map their new bus routes in advance using Winnipeg Transit's Navigo online or on the app.

The city has said the new network, consisting of a main bus line (spine) that connects to feeder buses along community routes, will provide more reliable and frequent service. It's being hailed as the biggest change in Winnipeg Transit's 142-year history.
The project manager for the Primary Transit Network, Bjorn Radstrom, Winnipeg Transit's manager of service development, is set to provide an update this morning about the launch.

Marcus Stroman lit up the Yankees, in the clubhouse and on the mound

Marcus Stroman lit up the Yankees, in the clubhouse and on the mound. Returning from a knee injury that sidelined him for 2 1/2 months, the 34-year-old right-hander resumed his pregame routine of lighting a scented candle in his stall Sunday morning to set the mood. He then allowed one run and three hits over five innings in a 12-5 win over the Athletics. 'It's not the same being on the side. You feel like you're left out,' he said. 'So definitely good to be back with the boys.' Among the shortest major league pitchers at 5-foot-7, Stroman is distinctive. Sunday's candle was Lavandula angustifolia (English lavender). Next to it was a stack of books: Osho's 'The Great Challenge,' Marcus Aurelius' 'Meditations' and Don Miguel Ruiz's 'The Four Agreements: A Practical Guide to Personal Freedom.' He had not pitched for the Yankees since April 11, when he was chased in a five-run first inning during a 9-1 loss to San Francisco. He got a cortisone shot and slowly worked his way back from left knee inflammation, an injury stemming from a torn ACL in 2015. Stroman takes pride in his grit. He tore his ACL during a spring training fielding drill with Toronto that March 10, started minor league rehab outings on Sept. 2 and returned to a big league mound that Sept. 19. Stroman started the season 0-1 with an 11.57 ERA in three starts. After the injury layoff, he was 0-1 with a 6.97 ERA in three rehab appearances with Double-A Somerset. 'I tore my ACL, made it back in five months, so I don't do doubt,' he said. 'Knew I'd be back at some point. It was just a matter of when.' Not a hard thrower these days, Stroman averaged 89.8 mph with his four-seam fastball. New York needed him for a rotation missing ace Gerrit Cole (Tommy John surgery), AL Rookie of the Year Luis Gil (strained right lat) and left-hander Ryan Yarbrough (strained right oblique). 'I thought he had a presence on both sides of the plate,' manager Aaron Boone said. 'Was a little unpredictable. Used his sinker, used his cutter and then the different kind of breaking balls. But he got after it in the zone when he needed to.' Stroman had a scare in the second inning, when Max Muncy hit a 97.2 mph liner off his right hamstring. Arrives a few hours prior to puck drop. 'It crushed me. Pretty firm. … It hurt a lot,' he said. Stroman didn't think he'd have to come out. 'Adrenaline is a great drug,' he said, 'so I won't feel it until tomorrow.' ___ AP MLB:

Judge homers twice to reach 30, Chisholm has 4 RBIs, Stroman wins in return as Yanks beat A's 12-5

NEW YORK (AP) — Aaron Judge homered twice to reach 30 for the sixth time and Jazz Chisholm Jr. also drove in four runs as Marcus Stroman won in his first start for the New York Yankees since April, a 12-5 romp over the Athletics on Sunday. Judge hit two-run homers in the fourth inning off Luis Severino and in the seventh against fellow Fresno, California-area native Tyler Ferguson for his 44th multi-homer game. Cody Bellinger added a three-run drive for the Yankees, who took two of three from the A's for only their second series win in 2 1/2 weeks. Severino (2-9) was chased with a 7-0 deficit in his Yankee Stadium return, hurt by a leaky defense. He has given up 15 runs in two starts against New York this year. Chisholm put the Yankees ahead in the second with his third homer in four games and boosted the lead with 4-0 with a bases-loaded triple in a four-run third. Chisholm is hitting .318 with six homers, 18 RBIs and four stolen bases since returning from strained right oblique on June 3. He appeared to hurt his right hand while trying to check a swing in the sixth but stayed in the game. Stroman (1-1), who had been sidelined by left knee inflammation, won for the first time since last Aug. 30. He allowed three hits, including Willie MacIver's fifth-inning homer. Severino, a two-time All-Star for the Yankees from 2015-23, allowed seven runs — six earned — five hits, three walks, two hitter batters, a wild pitch and two home runs. Yankees shortstop Anthony Volpe was ejected for the first time after an inning-ending strikeout in the eighth, by first base umpire Chad Fairchild. Key moments Third baseman Max Muncy couldn't see Bellinger's pop that fell in left for a hit in the first, and right fielder Lawrence Butler and second baseman Luis Urías knocked gloves on Trent Grisham's third-inning fly. Center fielder Denzel Clarke didn't cut off Chisholm's third-inning hit, turning a double into a triple. Butler allowed Bellinger's fourth-inning drive to sail just over his glove off the right-field wall and McIver, the catcher, dropped a sixth-inning foul pop. Key stat Severino is 0-7 with a 6.79 ERA at home and 2-2 with a 3.23 ERA on the road. Yankees : LHP Carlos Rodón (9-5, 2.92) starts Monday's series opener at Toronto against RHP Max Scherzer (0-0, 5.63). ___ AP MLB:
