Saudi Arabia Starts Issuing Hajj Workers' Permits

Gulf Insider16-04-2025
Saudi Arabia has started issuing online permits for residents, who will be engaged in the works linked to the upcoming Hajj season as preparations are in full swing for the annual Islamic pilgrimage in the kingdom.
The Saudi General Directorate of Passports said it has begun receiving applications from such workers to obtain entry permits to the holy city of Mecca through the Ministry of Interior's electronic platform 'Absher' and the 'Muqeem' portal.
The applicants do not need to visit the offices of the passport departments to get the permits.
The directorate cited technical integration with a unified digital platform for issuing Hajj permits dubbed the 'Tasareeh platform'.
Entry permits to Mecca are issued through the Muqeem portal to workers in establishments based in the city, holders of seasonal work visas, and those who have employment contracts with those establishments during the Hajj season.
As of April 29, holders of all types of visas, except for those holding a Hajj visa, will not be allowed to enter or remain in Mecca.
Saudi Arabia has also set April 29 as the deadline for all foreign Umrah pilgrims to leave the country. Staying beyond this date is deemed an offence that makes the violator liable to legal penalties.
The warning comes amid concerns about attempts by some foreign visitors to overstay their Umrah visas to illegally perform the Hajj rites due in early June in and around Mecca.
Saudi authorities have repeatedly said that a Hajj visa is mandatory to perform the pilgrimage and that a visit visa does not qualify its holders to undertake the holy journey.
Hajj is one of Islam's five obligatory duties. Muslims who are physically and financially able must perform Hajj at least once in their lifetime.
Around 1.8 million Muslims, including 1.6 million from abroad, performed last year's Hajj.

Saudi Arabia Launches E-Service To Expand Hotel Capacity Ahead Of Hajj 2026

As preparations begin for next year's Hajj season, Saudi Arabia is turning to digital tools to ease the strain on accommodation in the holy cities of Mecca and Medina. The Ministry of Tourism has introduced a new online service that allows operators of licenced hospitality facilities in Mecca and Medina to apply for additional bed capacity ahead of the Hajj season 2026. The application process follows specific procedures and requirements set by the ministry. Officials said the initiative is part of a broader effort to expand digital services and simplify administrative processes, improving efficiency in the hospitality sector and ensuring that pilgrims receive high standards of service during one of the busiest times of the year. The service also reflects the ministry's early planning for the pilgrimage season and its strategy to strengthen support for accommodation providers, enhance quality, and provide user-friendly electronic systems. The ministry said it hopes to leverage these digital tools to make the journey of pilgrims smoother and more comfortable. Licenced operators can access the new service through the tourism activities licencing portal on the ministry's website.

From Mecca To Medina: Saudi Arabia Recreates The Prophet's Migration For Visitors

Saudi Arabia will welcome 300,000 visitors this November for an unprecedented cultural and spiritual experience tracing Prophet Mohammed's (PBUH) historic migration route from Mecca to Medina. The ambitious project, 'In the Prophet's Steps,' has already attracted over one million registrations globally, with 300,000 selected for the inaugural season by the General Entertainment Authority (GEA). GEA Chairman Turki Al Sheikh said the overwhelming response reflects the deep global interest in this immersive initiative, which aims to bring to life one of the most significant events in Islamic history. Using advanced technology, the project reconstructs the 470-kilometre Hijrah route, 305 kilometres of which are walkable, allowing visitors to follow the Prophet's footsteps through restored landscapes and historical sites. Forty-one landmarks along the route have been rehabilitated, supported by eight stations and five interactive hubs narrating key moments of the migration. A dedicated Migration Museum will further enrich visitors' understanding. To enhance the overall experience, the route includes 30 restaurants and 50 shops, with capacity to host up to 12,000 visitors per day. 'This project is a testament to our leadership's commitment to preserving Islamic heritage,' said Turki Al Sheikh. 'It offers an opportunity to explore the landmarks of the Hijrah and reflect on its enduring lessons.' Interest has been especially strong in Indonesia, with international rollouts planned for Malaysia, Turkey, and India. By 2030, the initiative aims to welcome five million visitors annually. To ensure comfort and safety along the rugged terrain, specially designed 4×4 vehicles will transport visitors, while new technology has reduced the journey to the Cave of Thawr—a key Hijrah site—from a strenuous two-hour climb to just three minutes. Combining historical authenticity, immersive storytelling, and modern amenities, In the Prophet's Steps offers a deeply moving and accessible experience of the Prophet's migration, illuminating its profound spiritual and human values for a global audience.

Saudi Arabia Grants Extra 30 Days for Visit Visa

Saudi authorities have extended the grace period for visit visa holders who have overstayed, granting them an additional 30 days to leave the country, the General Directorate of Passports announced. The extension, which applies to all categories of visit visas, took effect on Sunday, July 27, and is conditional on the payment of any outstanding fines and fees in line with Saudi regulations. In a statement, the directorate said that eligible individuals can request departure through the 'Tawasul' service on the Ministry of Interior's digital 'Absher' platform. Officials urged visitors to make use of the extended window to arrange their departure within the specified timeframe and avoid further penalties. The initiative, first introduced in June, aims to streamline exit procedures and promote compliance with the kingdom's residency and immigration rules. Under the policy, which came into effect on June 26, overstayers were granted a 30-day grace period to settle fines and administrative fees before leaving the country, regardless of the type or classification of their visa. The latest extension is part of Saudi Arabia's broader effort to regulate residency and ensure smoother departure processes for visitors who remain in the kingdom beyond their visa validity.
