Dana Carvey explains why he did not attend the ‘SNL' 50th anniversary special

Yahoo22-02-2025
Dana Carvey was one of the biggest former 'Saturday Night Live' stars not to attend 'SNL50' last week. Now, we know why.
Carvey, known during his time on 'SNL' for such characters as the Church Lady, Garth in 'Wayne's World' and Hans in 'Pumping Up with Hans & Franz,' as well as his spot-on impressions of George H.W. Bush, Johnny Carson and Ross Perot, says he missed the 50th anniversary celebration because he was sick.
'I wasn't there. I had the flu,' he told fellow 'SNL' alum David Spade on the Feb. 20 episode of their 'Fly on the Wall' podcast.
'I was on the downside of it, but I still didn't have the oomph to travel. Wasn't recommended. So you went to represent our podcast.'
Spade said people asked him where Carvey was.
'You did want to be there, and you would've f------ killed it, of course,' Spade said.
Carvey remains one of the most popular 'SNL' stars in the show's history. He appeared on the program beginning in Season 12 in 1986 and remained for seven seasons until 1993, the same year he won an Emmy Award for outstanding individual performance in a variety or music program for his work on the series.
A pair of 'SNL' greats who did attend 'SNL50' have since fallen ill, too. Frequent host Steve Martin, who performed the monologue during the special, says performing partner Martin Short and Maya Rudolph have contracted COVID-19, prompting him and Short to bump back a few dates on their comedy tour.
'Maya had Covid. Marty has Covid. I wonder why? The SNL 50th Covid curse is real,' he captioned a photo of Short and Rudolph kissing on Instagram on Feb 20.
'Unfortunately, we have to reschedule our sold out Durham and Knoxville dates to 10/17 Knoxville and 10/18 Durham. So sorry for the inconvenience. I think we'll be funnier then, anyway.'
Like Carvey, original cast member Dan Aykroyd was also absent at 'SNL50,' but said he loved watching it.
'All Heads up toasting triumphant SNL 50th,' he wrote Feb. 19 on X, without explaining why he wasn't on hand for the event.
'Advantage of not attending — got to see every second of concert and show on TV. Quote from my children: 'Look at daddy's smile!' Had it from start to finish. Congratulations Lorne. Well done as usual.'
Bill Hader was another beloved star who missed 'SNL50.' A representative for the actor told TODAY.com he couldn't go to the special because he had 'a longstanding schedule conflict.'

Pete Davidson revealed the sweet parenting advice he got from his close friend Machine Gun Kelly as he expects baby No. 1 with his girlfriend, Elsie Hewitt. 'He's the best dad ever,' Davidson, 31, told People of Kelly, 35, during the Los Angeles premiere of The Pickup on Sunday, July 27. When it comes to his stance of becoming a parent, Davidson told the outlet that he's "just excited to take care of the little one." "The second I found out the news, I was like, 'Oh wow, what I do is just a job,'" he recalled. "I realized I was kind of basing my happiness on work, which is ridiculously unhealthy. Bob Odenkirk thinks he was 'too hard' on 'SNL' as young writer: 'This show could be better'

The "Nobody 2" star also tells EW he "would love that opportunity" when asked if there's a chance he'll host the season 51 premiere. Bob Odenkirk has found new respect for Saturday Night Live after leaving the show. While discussing Nobody 2 at San Diego Comic-Con 2025, the actor tells Entertainment Weekly that he has gained a better perspective on SNL in the years since he finished his tenure as a writer, which lasted from 1987 to 1991. Although he's previously said that he had a less-than-stellar view of SNL while he worked there, he now realizes that he judged the show too harshly. "I was too hard on the show," he says. "I had a lot of attitude when I got hired there, like, 'This show could be better, this show could be Monty Python, this should be more cutting edge, this should be more dangerous.' And I was frustrated by it not representing purely my point of view. I wanted it to be me, my show." Odenkirk now understands that his desire to personally transform the entire voice of SNL was foolhardy. "It's not my show! It's a show that is shared by everyone who's in that cast, and everyone who's in that writing staff, and it's shared by generations, and not one generation," he says. He continues, "Everybody in America watches it, and it's a reference point for everyone. I think the 50th just made me more aware [than] ever of the amazing work that's been done there." The Better Call Saul star also thinks that he got to write boundary-pushing comedy on a later project. "I think Mr. Show, the show I did with David Cross, I consider my effort to do something edgy and new and try to blast through some barriers and go to another level," he says. Odenkirk also admits that he didn't fully appreciate how SNL's lightning-fast weekly schedule makes its production so difficult. "It's a bigger challenge than I thought it was when I worked there," he explains. "When I worked there I was 25, I was like, 'C'mon, dammit! We can do better! This is easy!' And it literally was the years since I've left that I went, 'Wait a second, that show is almost impossible to do at all.'" Additionally, when asked if he'd consider hosting the show during its upcoming 51st season, Odenkirk responds strongly in the affirmative. "I would love that opportunity," he says. "I have mad respect for the effort of that show, and I would dream of being able to host."Though he's never hosted the show before, Odenkirk says that it remains within the realm of possibility. "There's been conversation about it," he explains. "They don't have me locked out. I'm friends with everybody there, and I know so many of the writers, and I know so many of the actors. It's just part of my life." Watch EW's full livestream of Friday's Comic-Con interviews above. Check out more of . Read the original article on Entertainment Weekly Solve the daily Crossword

Billy Joel speaks out about rumors he's had DUIs in new documentary

The Piano Man is defending his reputation. In the newly released second part of the HBO documentary 'Billy Joel: And So It Goes,' the 76-year-old music icon responded to the longstanding rumor that he's gotten multiple DUIs over the years. 'You know, along with fame comes a lot of gossip, rumors. I didn't like the tabloid kind of press,' Joel said in the doc. 'For example, there's this rumor that I have all these DUIs. That never happened, but people keep repeating the myth: 'Oh, he's got so many DUIs.'' Advertisement 6 Billy Joel performs at Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas in Nov. 2024. Less than a year later, he drove into a tree in Sag Harbor and had to be airlifted to a hospital. Advertisement 6 Billy Joel at Madison Square Garden in NYC in June 2023. The rumors about Joel led to 'Saturday Night Live' referencing his alleged drunk driving in a 2004 sketch that featured Horatio Sanz, who played the singer, chugging a bottle of pineapple schnapps and crashing into several walls and mailboxes while driving a group of girls to a party. However, Joel has repeatedly denied that he's ever gotten a DUI. Advertisement 6 Billy Joel performs in Melbourne, Australia in Dec. 2022. WireImage 'I had gone through a breakup and was really broken up about it, and I decided, 'I'm drinking too much. I should go to rehab,'' Joel told The New York Times Magazine in 2013. 'But people made a connection, like, 'Oh, he went there because he was in a car accident from drinking.' No.' 'I never had a DUI in my life,' he stated. 'That's another fallacy. Look at the police records.' 6 Billy Joel on Father's Day 2025. billyjoel/Instagram Advertisement In his documentary, Joel called the press 'mean' and admitted that he doesn't always enjoy being in the spotlight. 'Having that much attention paid to you is not easy,' he said. In 2005, Joel entered rehab following what he called an 'ultimatum' from his then-wife, Katie Lee. He entered the Betty Ford Center for a stint, then temporarily stopped touring once his time at the center was over. 6 Billy Joel attends MSG Entertainment and Billy Joel special franchise announcement at Chase Square at Madison Square Garden.
