Hard for Brazilian club Recife to lure Bergson away from JDT
KUALA LUMPUR: The talk is that Brazilian club, Sport Recife, are trying to bring Bergson Da Silva home, but the Johor Darul Ta'zim (JDT) star has more reasons to stay in Malaysia.
Recife, who compete in the top flight of the Brazilian league, have reportedly made contact with Da Silva.
Brazilian journalist Antonio Gabriel wrote on X: "Striker Bergson (34) is on Sport Recife's radar. The Rubro-Negro club has enquired about the player, who has been with Johor in Malaysia since 2020, scoring 152 goals in 137 matches."
Since joining JDT in February 2021, Da Silva has plundered 150 goals in 141 appearances, and is just one short of breaking Indra Putra Mahayuddin's all-time Super League scoring record.
But beyond club success, Da Silva is also close to qualifying for Malaysian naturalisation under Fifa's five-year residency rule. His contract with JDT runs until the end of this year, putting him just months away from being eligible to play for Harimau Malaya. A move now to Recife would reset that clock entirely.
Gabriel said Recife's biggest hurdle isn't just convincing Bergson, but matching his wages.
"Among the main challenges is the player's high salary demand. What Da Silva earns in Malaysia is significantly more than what Sport Recife can offer," he said.
With national team prospects within reach and more glory with JDT beckons, it's hard to see Da Silva leaving the Southern Tigers now.

INV new material's RM3.2bil Penang plant boosts Malaysia's EV hub ambitions
KUALA LUMPUR: China's INV New Material Technology (M) Sdn Bhd has launched its RM3.2 billion manufacturing facility in Penang, marking a significant milestone in Malaysia's push to become Southeast Asia's leading electric vehicle (EV) hub. The plant, which produces lithium-ion battery separators, is the first commercial facility of its kind in the country, firmly positioning Malaysia as the region's largest producer of this critical EV component. The newly launched facility will produce 1.3 billion square metres of wet-processed and coated lithium-ion separators. The project has generated over 2,000 job opportunities, including over 500 high-skilled technical roles with wages exceeding RM3,000 per month. It serves as a launchpad for technology and knowledge transfer, equipping Malaysian talent with practical exposure to advanced equipment, structured training programmes and collaboration with global experts. This holistic approach significantly upskills the workforce in advanced materials and engineering plastics, cultivating a future-ready talent pipeline vital for the nation's long-term growth in the EV and high-tech sectors. The plant also sets a benchmark in Industry 4.0 adoption as it integrates advanced automation, smart manufacturing systems, and digital technologies to maximise operational efficiency, enhance precision and promote sustainable practices. Malaysian Investment Development Authority (MIDA) chief executive officer Datuk Sikh Shamsul Ibrahim Sikh Abdul Majid said the launch of the facility marks a transformative step in the country's electric vehicle journey. He said the investment, anchored in the New Industrial Master Plan 2030 and the Chemical Industry Roadmap 2030, bridges a critical gap in the local EV ecosystem and embeds advanced materials into the supply chain. "It sets a new standard for high-tech manufacturing while strategically catalysing broader industrial growth and attracting more global and local players to strengthen Malaysia's position in the global EV value chain," he added. INV New Material Technology chief executive officer Liu Rui said that beyond investment, the plant is a long-term commitment to sustainability, innovation and talent development. "Malaysia offers the strategic advantages, talent pool, and government support we need to make this vision a reality, and we are proud to call it home to our first facility in the Asean region," he said.

NSC Open To Supporting Heritage Swimmers, Says DG
KUALA LUMPUR, June 29 (Bernama) -- The National Sports Council (NSC) welcomes the initiative by Malaysia Aquatics (MAS) to scout for heritage swimmers to further strengthen the national swimming squad. NSC director-general Jefri Ngadirin said the council is prepared to support any heritage athlete who has the potential to contribute to Malaysian sports. However, these swimmers must first meet the requirements set by NSC, he pointed out. bootstrap slideshow 'They will only be given assistance if they qualify for the Podium Programme or other related programmes. So there's no additional financial implication. 'Like any other athlete, they must meet the criteria set by NSC to be admitted into the programme, or by the Olympic Council of Malaysia (OCM) to represent the country in international competitions,' he told reporters after officiating the Sepaktakraw Association of Malaysia (PSM) annual general meeting at the World Trade Centre (WTC) here today. Yesterday, MAS disclosed that the association is actively working to identify heritage swimmers based abroad. MAS swimming committee chairman Marilyn Chua said they have already identified five promising candidates, aged between 14 and 19 years old. Meanwhile, Jefri commended the leadership of PSM under its president Datuk Mohd Sumali Reduan, saying it has improved significantly compared to the past. He expressed hope that other sports associations will follow PSM's example, which has led to its current strong standing.
