TN to install 360-degree cameras, driver monitoring systems in govt buses

Hans India04-06-2025
In a major initiative to enhance passenger safety and improve operational efficiency, the Tamil Nadu government has floated tenders worth Rs 17 crore to install advanced surveillance and driver monitoring systems in buses operated by State Transport Undertakings (STUs).
The project is being executed through the Institute of Road Transport (IRT).
The move follows an announcement made by Transport and Electricity Minister S.S. Sivasankar during the debate on the Transport Department's demand for grants in the Assembly.
According to tender notifications issued by the IRT, the government plans to equip 4,000 buses with 360-degree surveillance camera systems at an estimated cost of Rs 15 crore. In addition, a pilot project worth Rs 2 crore will introduce Driver Monitoring Systems (DMS) in 500 buses.
Each bus under the camera project will be fitted with four high-definition wide-angle cameras, providing a full panoramic view that helps eliminate blind spots.
Priced at Rs 37,500 per unit, these cameras will come with features such as wide dynamic range (WDR), auto white balance, digital noise reduction, and infrared capability for low-light conditions. The systems will also support encrypted data transmission and comply with established data protection norms.
Minister Sivasankar had earlier informed the Assembly that the 360-degree surveillance systems will aid in detecting pedestrians, cyclists, and other vehicles that are often missed by conventional mirrors, especially in congested urban areas.
The real-time footage will also serve as valuable legal evidence in the event of road accidents.
The Driver Monitoring System (DMS) units, each costing Rs 40,000, will employ artificial intelligence and infrared sensors to monitor drivers for signs of fatigue, distraction, or drowsiness. These systems will track eye movements, head position, and posture, and provide real-time alerts to allow for immediate corrective action.
Additionally, each DMS unit will record behavioural data to support post-trip analysis and help plan training interventions for drivers.
The current rollout on 500 buses is a pilot phase, with the potential for a wider implementation depending on its effectiveness and feedback from transport authorities. This initiative marks a significant technological upgrade for Tamil Nadu's public transport system and is expected to improve both passenger safety and driver accountability across the fleet.

Mentors appointed in 56 Delhi government schools, focus on improving performance

New Delhi [India], July 3 (ANI): The Directorate of Education, Delhi, has appointed senior officers as mentors in 56 government schools that recorded the lowest pass percentage (up to 45%) in classes 9 and 11 during the 2024-25 session. Each officer will guide one school until the 2025-26 session, conduct inspections every fortnight, and upload reports on the MIS portal, said a senior official in the Directorate of Education. This initiative is linked to the 'Mission Mathematics' and special enrichment classes campaign aimed at strengthening foundational understanding of mathematics for classes 6 to 10. The inspection reports will include assessments of subject-wise performance, student attendance, use of teaching-learning materials (TLM), and more. District and zonal officers will oversee the effective implementation of these programmes. The Delhi government is planning to introduce an ordinance to regulate private school fees. The ordinance may be introduced within a week. The Delhi government is preparing to bring this ordinance to curb arbitrary fee hikes by private schools. According to sources, the draft of the proposed ordinance, under the 'Delhi School Education Bill, 2025', has already been sent to the Law Department. The ordinance proposes a fine of up to Rs 50,000 for violations, and in cases of repeated violations, provision has been made for the confiscation of school property. Committees will be formed at the school, district, and review levels to determine fees. This bill was initially scheduled to be presented during the special session proposed on May 13-14, but the session could not be held. It will now be introduced as a bill in the upcoming Monsoon Session. On April 16, show-cause notices were served to 10 schools with regard to the arbitrary fee hike and those who didn't submit their audit reports. The present Delhi government has already collected audited reports from 600 schools. Previously, while speaking to ANI on the issue of fee hike by private schools, Delhi education minister Ashish Sood said, 'We will create a strong documentation system and tighten the noose around such schools. We will investigate how arbitrary fee hikes were approved in the past and whether any corrupt dealings took place with the previous government. We will not tolerate any such malpractice under any circumstances.' The matter of the arbitrary fee hike came to the fore when several students in DPS Dwarka were disenrolled when they failed to pay the hiked school fee, and the court intervened. The government also sent a committee that investigated the matter, following which show-cause notices were served to the schools. Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta has also announced previously many times that such fee hikes and harassment of parents and students won't be tolerated. Keeping this in mind, the government plans to introduce this ordinance to curb arbitrary fee hikes. The Rekha Gupta government aims to provide quality and modern education to every child in the state. The issue of arbitrary fee hikes by private schools in Delhi has been a longstanding concern, with the Delhi government taking various measures over the years to address it. (ANI)

Maharashtra: 76-year-old farmer ploughs farm manually for 10 years due to financial hardship

Latur (Maharashtra) [India], July 3, 2025 (ANI): Facing unbelievable financial hardship and unable to afford oxen for his fields, a 76-year-old farmer in Maharashtra's Hadolti village in the Latur district has been ploughing his fields manually for the last 10 years without any help from the state government. Ambadas Pawar has been a farmer for over 50 years and ploughing manually for the last 10 along with his wife, as he was forced to sell his oxen due to not being able to afford the animal's maintenance. He claimed that until now no one has come to help him and requested that his loan be waived off. Latur is also a drought prone area of the state. 'I have been farming for the last 50 years, but since it has not been possible for me to bear the expenses of oxen, I sold the oxen 10 years ago and have been the field with my own hands on my shoulders and working with my wife. No one has interfered for the last 10 years, but someone saw me ploughing the field and made a video and made it viral. After the video went viral, today the Latur district officer and the state minister contacted me,' the farmer said. Earlier, Latur district agriculture Superintendent Officer Shivsamb Ladke met with Pawar, assuring him of all the help possible, and also offering to give him farming literature provided under government schemes. The farmer's hardship was highlighted when a video of him manually ploughing his fields was shown in a news report, Later, the Mumbai Congress posted about the farmer in a post on X. 'When he couldn't find oxen to plow the field, he turned himself into an ox... A heart-wrenching scene has emerged from Hadolti village in Latur district,' the party's post read. The farmer has demanded that the government help waive off his outstanding loans of Rs 40,000, saying that while he does have a son who works in the city, he does not get any help for him. 'I have not received any help from the government so far. I demand from the government that my loan of 40 thousand rupees of the society should be waived off. I have a son and a daughter. The son works in a private company in Pune city, from which he earns his livelihood but we do not get any benefit from it,' he added. The farmers wife, Muktabai Ambadas Pawar decried the meagre sums of money which they get from farming, claiming that the government does not do enough to help sustain the livelihoods of smaller farmers. 'We are 6 people in the whole house. The son works in a private company in another city. He does not get anything from us. We have 4.5 acres of land. We do not have bulls, husband and I plough the field by hand. If the government had given us a fair price for our crop, we would not have to plough by hand. If you see, the price of soybean fertilizer is 3 thousand per sack and if we have to sell it in the market, we get 4 thousand rupees. Then how to meet our expenses is the question before us,' she told ANI. She also reiterated the demand to waive off her husband's loan, along with other farmers. Earlier on Wednesday, Congress MLA Nana Patole criticised the government for the increasing suicides of farmers in the state, accusing the government of not being able to control inflation. Patole said, 'The government has accepted that the farmers are committing suicide in cost of everything has increased, whether it's diesel, petrol, seeds, fertilisers or insecticides. The income of farmers is low, and that's why they are committing suicide.' (ANI)

Soham Parekh: How Indian techie fooled 10+ cos, earned over Rs 2L per day or Rs 7 cr a yr; Even CEOs called him 'really smart'

Soham Parekh, an Indian engineer, is under fire after Suhail Doshi, co-founder of Mixpanel, accused him of secretly working at multiple startups at once. At least five US founders have echoed similar experiences, warning others about Parekh's tactics. Allegations include faked credentials, overlapping jobs, and excuses that stretched team trust thin. The controversy has raised questions about startup hiring filters and the 'overemployment' trend that uses remote work and AI to juggle several paychecks at once. Tired of too many ads? Soham Parekh, whose CV claims a master's degree from Georgia Tech, has come under scrutiny after Suhail Doshi, co-founder and former CEO of Mixpanel , publicly warned others about him.'PSA: there's a guy named Soham Parekh (in India) who works at 3-4 startups at the same time. He's been preying on YC companies and more. Beware,' Doshi posted on X. He added that Parekh briefly joined his company, Playground AI, but was fired within a week when his duplicity came to did not stop at the warning. He posted Parekh's CV online, pointing out companies like Dynamo AI, Union AI, Synthesia, Alan AI, and Fleet AI where Parekh allegedly held simultaneous roles. Doshi claimed the CV was 'probably 90 per cent fake'.'I fired this guy in his first week and told him to stop lying/scamming people. He hasn't stopped a year later. No more excuses,' Doshi wrote. He said he had cross-checked his claims with more than six companies before making them allegations quickly gained support. Nicolai Ouporov, co-founder of Fleet AI, said, 'He has been doing this for years and works at more than 4 startups at any given time.'Flo Crivello, CEO of Lindy, echoed the frustration. 'Holy sh*t. We hired this guy a week ago. Fired this morning. He did so incredibly well in interviews, must have a lot of training. Careful out there,' Crivello posted, sharing that Parekh cited time zone issues and company changes to explain past Parkhurst, CEO of Antimetal, confirmed Parekh had been his company's first engineering hire in 2022. 'Really smart and likeable; enjoyed working with him. We realised pretty quickly that he was working at multiple companies and let him go,' Parkhurst revelations have pushed the spotlight onto a wider trend: 'overemployment'. Deedy Das, an AI investor, called Parekh 'the tip of the iceberg' and said thousands might be doing the same. Das outlined tricks overemployed people use—mouse jugglers to keep their cursor active, blocking calendars as 'focus time', outsourcing tasks, keeping cameras off and delivering work just enough to from Reddit forums show self-claimed overemployed workers boasting of salaries crossing $800,000 a year through multiple jobs. 'No job should take too much effort (time) relative to the return,' one user wrote. 'Interviews should be gamified. Lie, cheat, and steal. Use AI.'Despite repeated terminations, Parekh's skill at interviews made him hard to detect. Startup founders said he came across as sharp, presentable and convincing. 'I was THIS close to hiring him. The craziest part is he actually crushed the interview,' Justin Harvey, co-founder of AIVideo, Jain, founder of Mosaic, agreed. 'Can confirm. This guy wasted our time for a month. did great in interviews. but he's a liar.' Michelle Lim, product head at Warp, added that Parekh had been hired for a trial before the allegations surfaced and the engagement was Das shared screenshots from Reddit where a data expert claimed to make $800,000 (₹6.85 crore) a year by holding five jobs at once. Some argue that lean hiring and quick interviews leave blind spots that skilled candidates can exploit. 'This trend is often a symptom of failed leadership, not just deceitful employees,' wrote one user. 'Asking this as genuine advice since I do really love what I do, have I completely sabotaged my career? What can I do to improve my situation? I am also happy to come clean,' Parekh reportedly told questions linger. How did so many startups miss the red flags? Could this happen again?
