Counselling for MBBS, BDS seats kicks off on July 30
Chennai: The selection committee will declare the merit list for MBBS/BDS admissions by July 25 and begin counselling by July 30, health minister Ma Subramanian said on Wednesday. The committee received 72,743 applications for admissions under govt, management, and NRI quotas this year. "The applications were scrutinized early. During the process, officials found some candidates missed important documents, including birth certificates, minority certificates, or nativity certificates. The committee has asked these candidates to make necessary corrections or submit documents before 10am on Friday," he said. These documents will be scrutinized before the merit list is released. Now, scrutiny is being carried out for candidates who applied under IRT and ex-servicemen quota. "The merit list will be released by July 25. The first round of online counselling for the allotment of seats will be held as per the schedule released by Centre's medical counselling committee starting July 30," he added. At least 20 candidates who submitted forged nativity, community, or NRI documents have been debarred from Tamil Nadu medical counselling for three years. The committee will cancel their candidature and initiate legal action against them, Subramanian said. While the embassy certificates submitted by four candidates opting for seats under the NRI quota were found to be fake, nine students submitted fake nativity certificates, while nine submitted fake community and nativity certificates, he said. While there will be no additional MBBS seats in Tamil Nadu, the directorate of medical education has applied for permission to start post-graduate seats in at least 13 institutions in courses such as general surgery, general medicine, obstetrics, and gynaecology, including 12 medical colleges and Kalaignar Centenary Super Speciality Hospitals, he said. These additional seats will increase PG seats in Tamil Nadu if they are approved by National Medical Commission, the apex regulatory authority in Tamil Nadu.

You can ride vintage subway trains to Rockaway Beach and Coney Island this summer
If your ideal summer day involves sand, surf and a heavy dose of New York nostalgia, the New York Transit Museum has your name all over two upcoming beach-bound adventures. This July and August, the Museum is rolling out its wildly popular Summer Nostalgia Rides, giving New Yorkers the chance to head to Coney Island and Rockaway Beach aboard vintage R1-9 subway cars from the 1930s. It's part seaside getaway, part living history tour—and way cooler than sitting in traffic on the BQE. The first trip takes place Saturday, July 19, when the vintage fleet will shuttle straphangers from 96th Street–Second Avenue to the Coney Island–Stillwell Avenue terminal. It's a roughly two-hour joyride straight into the past, ending at the doorstep of Luna Park, the boardwalk and a perfectly snappy Nathan's dog. Riders can return to Manhattan aboard the same cars later in the day or stay and soak in the sunset. Then on Sunday, Aug. 10, the train heads to Rockaway Park–Beach 116th Street for a full day of ocean breezes and boardwalk snacks. That trip also departs from the Upper East Side at 10 am and returns mid-afternoon, though you're free to extend your stay if you're feeling extra beachy. The real stars of the show here are the trains themselves. These R1-9 cars first hit the tracks in 1932, combining the best of IRT and BMT design: speedy, spacious and equipped with four double doors for quick crowd movement. Govt Buses To Get 360-Degree Cameras, Driver Monitoring Systems In THIS State
Chennai: In a major initiative to enhance passenger safety and improve operational efficiency, the Tamil Nadu government has floated tenders worth Rs 17 crore to install advanced surveillance and driver monitoring systems in buses operated by State Transport Undertakings (STUs). The project is being executed through the Institute of Road Transport (IRT). The move follows an announcement made by Transport and Electricity Minister S.S. Sivasankar during the debate on the Transport Department's demand for grants in the Assembly. According to tender notifications issued by the IRT, the government plans to equip 4,000 buses with 360-degree surveillance camera systems at an estimated cost of Rs 15 crore. In addition, a pilot project worth Rs 2 crore will introduce Driver Monitoring Systems (DMS) in 500 buses. Each bus under the camera project will be fitted with four high-definition wide-angle cameras, providing a full panoramic view that helps eliminate blind spots. Priced at Rs 37,500 per unit, these cameras will come with features such as wide dynamic range (WDR), auto white balance, digital noise reduction, and infrared capability for low-light conditions. The systems will also support encrypted data transmission and comply with established data protection norms. Minister Sivasankar had earlier informed the Assembly that the 360-degree surveillance systems will aid in detecting pedestrians, cyclists, and other vehicles that are often missed by conventional mirrors, especially in congested urban areas. The real-time footage will also serve as valuable legal evidence in the event of road accidents. The Driver Monitoring System (DMS) units, each costing Rs 40,000, will employ artificial intelligence and infrared sensors to monitor drivers for signs of fatigue, distraction, or drowsiness. These systems will track eye movements, head position, and posture, and provide real-time alerts to allow for immediate corrective action. Additionally, each DMS unit will record behavioural data to support post-trip analysis and help plan training interventions for drivers. The current rollout on 500 buses is a pilot phase, with the potential for a wider implementation depending on its effectiveness and feedback from transport authorities. This initiative marks a significant technological upgrade for Tamil Nadu's public transport system and is expected to improve both passenger safety and driver accountability across the fleet.
