Late-night parties may lead to rape: Posters sponsored by Gujarat cops
AHMEDABAD: A police-sponsored poster campaign to dispense safety tips to women in Ahmedabad has sparked outrage with what many see as "sexist" and "alarmist" messaging, including a warning in big, bold letters: "Attending late-night parties could invite rape or gang rape".
The police brass has since had the posters removed, acknowledging that the content - a second poster says, 'Do not venture with friends into dark, isolated areas. You could be raped or gangraped' - was "unacceptable".
Neeta Desai, DCP (traffic west), and Shailesh Modi, ACP (traffic admin), said an organisation named Satarkta had approached police for permission to put up posters in Gujarati "for traffic awareness".
Police were unaware of the "advice" printed on the posters plastered on dividers in areas like Sola and Chandlodi until a backlash erupted on social media, the ACP said.

"We never approved such language," said his colleague, ACP (traffic) N N Chaudhary.
Ghatlodia resident Bhumi Patel said police should have filtered the content before putting it out. "How could posters with such insensitive messaging that indirectly blame women for sexual violence be allowed to go up under official sanction? What kind of scrutiny was done before permission was given?" she said.
Gaytri Shah, a fitness trainer from Bodakdev, said the posters made a mockery of women's safety, reducing it to moral policing.
"They undermine the very idea of public awareness by peddling fear and control instead of responsibility and protection," she said.
Minal Solanki, a resident of Nehrunagar said the posters "reflect a mindset that blames the victim and absolves institutions of their failure to ensure safety without resorting to fear-mongering."

Three students arrested for role in Rs 6.5 lakh digital arrest
HYDERABAD: Cybercrime police on Saturday arrested three students from Secunderabad for their alleged involvement in a digital arrest fraud case. Police said the accused, addicted to online gaming, had lost money and agreed to supply bank accounts to unknown individuals via WhatsApp in exchange for commissions. They provided over 40 bank accounts online, which were later used in cyber frauds. The case came to light when a 57-year-old government employee from Dhoolpet reported receiving a call in January from a fraudster posing as a DCP, alleging his Aadhaar card was used to open a Bank of Baroda account involved in a Rs 2 crore money laundering case. The caller claimed a warrant had been issued and instructed the victim to share his savings details and deposit money to resolve the matter. Fearing arrest, the victim transferred `6.50 lakh to the given accounts before realising it was a scam and approaching the police. Investigations revealed the accused were involved in 23 similar cases across India.

Delhi horror: Out on bail in rape case, man shoots survivor dead; tracked her for 2-3 days

Reportedly angered by the complaint, the duo attacked her inside an autorickshaw as she was returning home from work. Both men have been arrested and a case of attempted murder registered. Police said the accused, Abuzair Safi, was arrested in the rape case last year and released on interim bail last month. Safi had been trying to contact her but she did not respond. Safi then decided to attack her along with his aide, Aman Shukla, police said. Police got a PCR call around 9.49pm on July 30 regarding a shooting near the Poorvi Marg red light. A team from the police station found an auto-rickshaw parked at the scene. "The driver, Ranjeet Yadav, informed us that a woman passenger had suffered a gunshot injury and had been already taken to the AIIMS Trauma Centre by a PCR van," police said. At AIIMS, the victim was found to be conscious and medically stable. She told police that while she was going home from work in an auto and speaking on the phone, two persons on a black motorcycle approached from behind. One of them - Abuzair Safi, a resident of Okhla Vihar - who was driving the bike, fired at her, injuring her. A case of attempted murder has been registered in Vasant Vihar police station. "Through meticulous CCTV analysis, social media tracking and technical surveillance, the accused were identified as Abuzair Safi and his associate, Aman Sukhla," deputy commissioner of police (southwest) Amit Goel said. During the investigation, Sukhla was arrested and the motorcycle used in the crime was seized. A subsequent operation led to the arrest of Safi, the shooter. A country-made pistol used in the attack was also found. Both accused are now in custody. "It is noteworthy that the victim is also the complainant in a rape case registered at Malviya Nagar police station, in which Abuzair Safi is also named. The possible connection between the two cases and the motive behind the attack is currently under investigation," the DCP added. Delhi: Year after woman reports husband as missing, she & partner held for murder
On July 5, last year, Pritam Prakash from Outer North Delhi's Alipur, was murdered and his body dumped in a drain near Agwanpur village at Ganaur district in Haryana's Sonipat. Fifteen days later, his wife Soniya (34) filed a missing complaint at Alipur police station, claiming that Pritam had gone missing during the night of July 5. What began as a probe into a missing person's complaint unraveled into a calculated plot involving deception, betrayal, and a staged disappearance, eventually leading to Soniya and her partner Rohit's (28) arrests on Friday for Pritam's murder, police said on Saturday. The motive behind the murder – a toxic marriage, years of domestic abuse, and the desire to start a new life together. The case took a turn when Delhi Police, conducting routine checks on absconding criminals, noticed that Pritam had been off the grid for too long. In fact, he had been missing for so long that he had been declared a Proclaimed Offender in one of the cases lodged against him. It was then, police said, that they discovered the missing person complaint filed by Soniya. When they attempted to trace Pritam's phone, the police realised that it was active in Jaji village of Sonipat. A raid was conducted but in place of Pritam, the police found Rohit, in possession of the phone. Police said Rohit first attempted to obfuscate the truth by saying that he had bought the phone from a stranger. When questioned further, he cracked. He allegedly admitted to being in a relationship with Soniya and claimed that she had given him the phone to dispose of after Pritam's murder. Subsequently, police said, Soniya was arrested. She allegedly admitted that she hired her sister's brother-in-law, Vijay, as a contract killer to murder Pritam for a price of Rs 1 lakh. DCP (Crime) Harsh Indora said, 'Soniya married Pritam Prakash when she was 16 years old… It was a love marriage. But Pritam was a drug addict and often used to beat her up. They frequently fought over it. Pritam had been to jail many times for illegal possession of weapons, robbery, theft, and kidnapping, among others… because of this, the atmosphere at home was not pleasant.' He added that in 2023-24, Soniya became friends with Rohit, who used to drive a taxi in Delhi, over social media. The police said that on July 2, last year, after a fight with Pritam, Soniya left for her sister's house in Ganaur in Rohit's cab. During the car ride, she allegedly asked Rohit to kill Pritam. But when Rohit asked for Rs 6 lakh, she dropped the idea, said police. Three days later, Pritam came to Ganaur to pick up Soniya. There, the couple fought again and Pritam insulted her, said police. Incensed, Soniya allegedly decided to murder Pritam. Police said she then approached Vijay. 'At Soniya and Vijay's request, Pritam agreed to stay back in Ganaur… She went to sleep on the terrace… After some time, she heard Pritam's screams. When she woke up in the morning, she saw that Pritam was not at home,' said the DCP. The following day, Soniya left for home with Pritam's autorickshaw, which she later sold to pay Vijay Rs 1 lakh and repay some loans. Police said that Pritam's body, then unidentified, was discovered by the Sonipat police on July 10. Ten days later, Soniya filed a missing person complaint. This June, before Soniya and Rohit's arrest, Vijay was arrested in a theft case.
