900-year-old tradition
, the iconic
Bale Miyan fair
in Gorakhpur will not take place this year. The month-long event held in memory of Syed Salar Masud Ghazi—locally called Bale Miyan—was scheduled to begin on May 18.
However, the district administration has not granted the necessary security clearance, effectively stalling the fair, claimed the dargah mutawalli (custodian).
Notably, the district administration has, however, declared May 19 a local holiday for the urs of Bale Miyan.
Earlier this month, the Bahraich district administration had denied nod for the annual Jeth Mela held at the shrine of
Syed Salar Masud Ghazi
in Bahraich too, citing an LIU report flagging law and order concerns. Before this the state government had denied permission for holding the Sambhal's Neja Mela, also in the name of Salar Masud. This was followed by CM Yogi Adityanath's assertion that glorification of invaders amounted to treason which an "independent India will not tolerate".

Top China official says U.S. Defence Chief 'inciting conflict'
A senior Chinese official accused the United States' Defence chief on Thursday (July 3, 2025) of 'inciting confrontation and conflict' after he urged American allies to bolster their militaries to counter Beijing. China and the United States last month said they had reached an understanding on a trade deal — a truce after bruising tit-for-tat tariffs on each other's goods. But the two countries still disagree on issues ranging from technology and security to geopolitics, including the conflicts in Ukraine and the Middle East, as well as Beijing's territorial claims in Asia. Also Read | Hegseth says US will stand by Indo-Pacific allies against 'imminent' threat of China U.S. Defence Secretary Pete Hegseth has warned that China is preparing to use military force to upend the balance of power in Asia and has urged American allies to achieve "peace through strength". On Thursday, Liu Jianchao, the head of the International Department of China's ruling Communist Party, said Hegseth's remarks constituted "hegemonic thinking". "What he truly wants is force, not dialogue," Mr. Liu told the World Peace Forum in Beijing. "What he is inciting is confrontation and conflict, not peace and harmony," he said. China and the United States have long been at odds over Beijing's expansive claims in the strategically crucial South China Sea, and its refusal to rule out using force to seize Taiwan, the self-governed island it claims as its own. "The Chinese government has made it crystal clear that it will never back down on these issues," Liu said. "The Chinese people will do their utmost to strive for the prospect of peaceful reunification of the motherland, but we will never allow Taiwan independence," he added. "The United States must respect China's sovereignty on this issue."

Top Chinese Official Says War With US Unimaginable in Tone Tweak
A senior Chinese official said he was 'optimistic' about the future of his nation's ties with the US, among the most upbeat comments given by Beijing in recent weeks about a relationship upended by Donald Trump's tariffs. Both the Chinese and the Americans are hoping for a 'friendly, good' relationship between their countries, and politicians are expected to heed the will of the people, Liu Jianchao, head of the Communist Party's International Department, said at the government-backed World Peace Forum on Thursday. Speaking in Beijing, Liu called a war between China and the US 'unimaginable' but highlighted Taiwan and the South China Sea as possible flashpoints. He urged America to respect the One China principle, which dictates that Taiwan is part of China's territory. Liu urged America to respect China's sovereignty and honor its commitments on Taiwan. 'We will decide at what time to take what kind of measures to achieve China's reunification based on the development of the situation, our needs, and movements of Taiwan's separatist forces,' he said. China is adopting a less confrontational tone with the US days after confirming details of a trade framework with Washington, as the world's two largest economies finalized an understanding reached in Geneva. But while the trade truce may be holding for now, Beijing is increasingly wary about US efforts to forge deals that could isolate Chinese firms from global supply chains. 'China is keenly aware of what it's gained from China-US cooperation,' Liu said. 'Our cooperation is mutually beneficial. The act of putting up barriers will hurt the other and ourselves as well.' The Chinese official also struck a critical note, recalling US Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth's message of 'peace through strength' — delivered a month ago during the Shangri-La Dialogue in Singapore — and calling it 'a rebranding of hegemonism.' 'Such rhetoric is about flexing muscles instead of encouraging dialogue,' Liu said. 'It will only stir up confrontation and conflicts instead of promoting peace and harmony.' The diplomat additionally addressed some of the territorial disputes China has with its neighbors, sketching out an approach to solving its border issues with India and Bhutan that he said will rely on dialogue. 'China is not leveraging its size and national strength to oppress others,' Liu said. 'Instead, we're trying to find solutions to control and address the South China Sea issue through negotiations.'
