KUALA LUMPUR: A total of 5,121 police personnel will be deployed for the coming 58th Asean Foreign Ministers' Meeting and Related Meetings here.
Bukit Aman Internal Security and Public Order Department director Datuk Seri Azmi Abu Kassim said a detailed security plan has been drawn up with continuous monitoring to ensure that the meetings at the Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre go smoothly from next Tuesday to Friday.
'Police have taken appropriate measures to ensure full preparedness ahead of this meeting.
'The main focus is the security of VIPs, traffic control and handling emergencies.
'This team will also use sophisticated technology such as facial recognition systems and explosives detection,' he told Bernama yesterday.
Azmi said police will combine forces with various departments and units, including the Federal Reserve Force, Special Operations Unit, 69 Commando and Special Branch.
He said that besides the main meeting location, security controls will also be extended to other important areas, such as the KL International Airport and Subang Airport.
'Security control will also be implemented at the delegates' accommodation locations and certain zones around the delegation arrival area, which will be gazetted as restricted or semi-restricted areas,' he said.

45 injured in petrol station explosion in Rome

ROME: The number of injured people has risen to 45 following a powerful explosion at a petrol station in eastern Rome on Friday morning, according to the latest reports from Italian media, Xinhua reported. Italy's ANSA news agency reported that the injured include 12 police officers, six firefighters, and three emergency rescuers who had arrived on the scene after an initial smaller blast. Additional explosions occurred shortly thereafter. Two people are in critical condition and currently on life support, while six others have been classified as "code red" - the highest level of medical emergency in Italy's healthcare system. The explosion occurred at a petrol station on Via Gordiani in Rome's Prenestino district. Preliminary investigations by the local fire department suggest the blast may have been caused by a fuel pump detaching from a tanker truck. Authorities are continuing to investigate the incident. – Bernama-Xinhua

Malaysian authorities dismantle Islamic State-linked funding network

Xinhua 04 Jul 2025, 17:45 GMT+10 KUALA LUMPUR, July 4 (Xinhua) -- Malaysian authorities have dismantled an Islamic State-linked funding network operating in the country, which mainly relied on Bangladeshi nationals working in Malaysia, Inspector-General of Police Mohd Khalid Ismail said on Friday. According to Bernama, Mohd Khalid told a press briefing that the group collected funds by charging an annual membership fee, as well as other voluntary contributions based on members' financial means. The group's members were working in labor sectors such as factories, construction sites, and petrol stations across Malaysia. "The funds collected were then transferred abroad using e-wallet applications and international money transfer services," he said, adding that no Malaysians were found to be involved. Mohd Khalid added that the group also used social media platforms and messaging apps to recruit new members.

Toddler dies of suspected abuse in Sungai Buloh

KUALA LUMPUR: A two-year-old girl has died with bruises, swelling, and cuts on her body, believed to be the victim of abuse, in Paya Jaras, Sungai Buloh on Thursday. Sungai Buloh police chief Supt Mohd Hafis Muhammad Nor said police received a report on the child's death from a medical officer at Sungai Buloh Hospital at 12.45am. He said the toddler was brought to the hospital in an unconscious state by a couple, aged 27 and 28, who were also her adoptive parents. "The attending doctor reported receiving an unconscious child brought in by the couple. "Checks revealed bruises, swelling, and injuries all over the body, along with dried blood stains around the mouth and nose," he said in a statement last night. Mohd Hafis said that following the report, a team from the Sungai Buloh district police headquarters Criminal Investigation Division arrested the couple to assist in the investigation. "Initial checks found that both suspects had no prior criminal records. "A remand application will be submitted at the Shah Alam court tomorrow (today) to facilitate further investigation," he said. He said the child's body has been sent to the Sungai Buloh Hospital Forensic Department for a post-mortem and the case is being investigated under Section 31(1)(a) of the Child Act 2001. Those with information are urged to contact the Saujana Utama police station at 03-6038 3322 or investigating officer Insp Mohamad Aizad Abd Azik at 013-486 1194. – Bernama
