Rupee falls to over two-week low on corporate dollar bids, outflows

Mint4 days ago
MUMBAI(Reuters) - The Indian rupee weakened past the 86 per U.S. dollar mark on Monday to its lowest level in more than two weeks, weighed by corporate dollar demand and equity-related outflows, traders said, amid uncertainty over U.S. trade policies.
The rupee closed at 86.9850 against the U.S. dollar, down 0.2% from its close at 85.80 on Friday. The currency hit a low of 86.0475 earlier in the day, its weakest level since June 25.
Dollar demand from a large Indian conglomerate and other companies pressured the rupee alongside likely outflows from Indian equities, traders said.
India's benchmark equity indexes, the BSE Sensex and Nifty 50, declined 0.3%, even as most regional peers ticked higher. [.BO]
Stocks in Europe fell and the common currency weakened marginally against the dollar after U.S. President Donald Trump threatened a 30% levy on the region's imports over the weekend, deepening his ongoing trade war.
U.S. equity futures were in the red as well, with the S&P 500 futures down 0.3%.
"The moves have not been larger since investors see these threats as a Washington negotiating tactic to push the other side over the line into a deal," ING said in a note.
India is among the few large U.S. trade partners that have not yet received a tariff letter. Indian negotiators are expected to head back to the U.S. soon for another round of talks, centred on disagreements over auto components, steel and farm goods.
"All things considered, chances of the rupee gaining ground remain limited," said Amit Pabari, managing director at FX advisory firm CR Forex. Pabari expects the rupee to face resistance around the 85.40-85.50 level.
Focus is now on India's consumer inflation data due later in the day. Benign food prices and a high base likely helped Indian inflation slow to a more than six-year low at 2.50% in June, according to a Reuters poll of 50 economists.

US fall intake hit by visa chaos: Consultants warn of 70–80% drop in Indian students

iStock With the fall semester about to begin in under two weeks, American universities are bracing for a steep drop in Indian student arrivals. Education consultants in Hyderabad estimate up to a 70% decline, citing a freeze in US visa appointment slots and a spike in rejection rates as the key reasons. 'By this time usually, most students are done with their visa interviews and are preparing to fly. This year, we're still refreshing the portal every day hoping for a slot to open. It's the worst in years,' Sanjeev Rai of Hyderabad Overseas Consultant, told TOI's Amisha Rajani. While the US State Department earlier indicated that student visa appointments would be released in phases, consultants say the process remains inconsistent and lacks transparency. With many students unable to secure interview slots or receive confirmation after booking, withdrawals are rising and alternative destinations like Germany are gaining attention. 'Even when a few slots opened midweek, those who managed to book haven't received confirmation.' He suggested the US authorities might be testing their systems, adding, 'There's no logical reason to open a handful of slots without confirming bookings,' Ankit Jain from Window Overseas Education Consultancy noted. Several consultancies report a sharp increase in panic calls from students and parents alike. 'If slots aren't released in the next few days, thousands of dreams will be shattered. We are seeing about an 80% drop. We're getting panic calls every day,' said Arvind Manduva of I20 Fever. Adding to the uncertainty is a high rate of rejections under Section 214B of the US Immigration and Nationality Act. This clause is typically used when applicants are unable to demonstrate strong ties to India and prove their intent to return after studies. 'Many students who usually would have had smooth approvals are being turned away. Their social media was also clean. The only reason that everyone seems to be receiving is 214B,' said Jain. India sent over 3.3 lakh students to the US last year, surpassing China for the first time. But this year, even those who began visa processes early are being turned down. 'Many students who have been preparing for months are seeing their dream crash. However, what the US authorities are doing is not new. The rules, vetting, and scrutiny were in place for years; it is just effectively implemented now. This will filter out applicants,' said Ravi Lothumalla from US Admission, an immigration consulting firm based in Dallas. Meanwhile, the US Consulate General in Hyderabad confirmed that visa slots have resumed. 'We're working to fully vet visa applicants to ensure they do not intend to harm America or our interests, and that they credibly establish their eligibility for the visa sought, including that they intend to engage in activities consistent with the terms of their admission. We encourage applicants to apply as early as they can and to anticipate additional processing time for these visa categories,' said a spokesperson from the US Consulate General in Hyderabad. India's EV charging infra expands 5-fold, yet 1 station serves 235 vehicles

India's electric vehicle (EV) charging infrastructure is growing rapidly, with the number of public EV charging stations registering a five-fold increase from FY22 to early FY25, according to a report by CareEdge Ratings. The report stated that public EV charging stations (EVPCS) have grown significantly from just 5,151 in CY22 to 11,903 in CY23, and further to 25,202 by the end of FY24, reaching 26,367 in early FY25. This marks a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of about 72 per cent over the three-year period from FY22 to FY25. It stated, "Charging infrastructure is scaling rapidly, with public EV stations growing over 5x from FY22 to early FY25." The report stated the rapid growth has been led by strong initiatives from the central and state governments. The Indian government has significantly stepped up efforts to boost public charging infrastructure across the country. Several state-level EV policies are also playing an important role by attracting both public and private investments into the sector. The report noted that this growth reflects the government's strong commitment to encouraging the adoption of electric vehicles in the country. Additionally, the Production Linked Incentive (PLI) Scheme for battery manufacturing, along with duty exemptions on key minerals, is expected to reduce India's import dependency by up to 20 per cent by FY27. This is likely to make EVs more affordable and help lower the overall cost of ownership. However, the report also pointed out a gap between the growth of EVs and the charging infrastructure. Currently, India has just one public charging station for every 235 electric vehicles on the road. It said, "With only 26,367 public EV charging stations available, India currently has around one charger for every 235 EVs on the road." This highlighted the need for continued and faster development of EV charging stations to keep pace with the increasing number of electric vehicles being sold in the country. Overall, while the EV charging network in India is expanding quickly, there is still a need for more balanced growth to fully support the transition to electric mobility.>
