S'gor workshops for AI solutions
Selangor government, through Selangor Technical Skills Development Centre (STDC) and Google Cloud, has launched Teraju AI Selangor.
This joint initiative aims to help state government agencies build and implement custom artificial intelligence (AI) solutions.
Teraju AI Selangor aims to enable these agencies to enhance public services in various aspects, including citizen communications, education, healthcare, transportation, physical infrastructure maintenance and advance projects that boost tourism and agricultural output.
Selangor Mentri Besar Datuk Seri Amirudin Shari, who was guest of honour at the launch held at Google Malaysia in Kuala Lumpur, said the state recognised the potential of generative AI (gen AI) and agentic AI (AI that can act autonomously) to reshape public service and accelerate Selangor's transformation into a leading smart state.
'We're therefore taking action through Teraju AI Selangor, equipping state agencies with the essential toolset and training to help them effectively and responsibly harness these technologies,' he said.
He expressed confidence in Google Cloud's capability to enable the rapid development of functional AI solutions with strong guardrails.
'I must also stress that throughout this initiative, we are prioritising safe and ethical use of data, with zero compromise on data privacy and security as we cannot take cyber threats lightly.
'I hope through this, Selangor can build a more responsive system of government that is fit for the 21st century while rivalling some of Asia's best,' he added.
In a statement, STDC said through the initiative, Selangor has invested in an AI innovation sandbox that is the first of its kind in Malaysia's public sector.
The sandbox will provide participating agencies with funded access to Google Cloud's fully integrated AI technology stack for up to six weeks.
With access to these capabilities via a dedicated and secure Google Cloud environment, agencies can rapidly build their own gen AI and agentic AI solutions.
To ensure effective use of the sandbox, participating agencies will be enrolled in a full-day workshop by STDC and Google Cloud.
During this workshop, the agencies' AI practitioners and developers will receive tailored, hands-on training.
This will enable them to identify strategic cases that can be addressed using AI.
Participants will also get to build at least one AI solution prototype.
They will then get to test and refine their prototypes over six weeks.
Afterwards, participants will present working solutions to a panel with representatives from Selangor government, STDC and Google Cloud.
Panel members will evaluate the functionality and readiness of these proposals.
Solutions most able to benefit Selangor's citizens and economy will be showcased at the Teraju AI Selangor graduation ceremony later this year.
Further state funding may also be provided to enable full-scale implementation of solutions.
STDC chairman Mohd Nazri Noh expressed the centre's pride in working with Google Cloud to lead Teraju AI Selangor.
'This initiative can be a catalyst for public service transformation.
'But, unlocking its full potential requires practical AI solution development and implementation experience.
'Teraju AI Selangor is designed to empower state agencies with an enterprise AI toolset and hands-on training curriculum, crafted by Google Cloud experts who have been shaping this field.
'This initiative will nurture a public sector workforce that's capable of translating technological promise into real-world applications that deliver tangible value for communities,' he said.
Google Cloud Malaysia and Singapore country director Serene Sia said Selangor was poised to greatly benefit from Google's investments in Malaysia and its leading AI capabilities.
'With Teraju AI Selangor, we're deepening our partnership with Selangor government, working directly with state agencies and STDC to identify specific areas where AI can uplift productivity, enhance decision-making and deliver impactful services in support of state priorities like Rancangan Selangor.

Are you spared? Water tariff set to rise in second phase, Selangor exco says two categories exempt
SHAH ALAM, July 10 — Two categories of consumers in Selangor are expected to be spared from the upcoming water tariff hike, said state Infrastructure and Agriculture Committee chairman Datuk Izham Hashim. He said the two categories are recipients of the Skim Air Darul Ehsan (SADE) free water programme, which covers the B40 group, as well as domestic and commercial users who consume less than 20 cubic metres of water. He said the adjustment marks the second phase of the water tariff increase, which came into force on Feb 1, 2024. 'The increase is being implemented in stages. The first phase, which took place earlier this year, involved the commercial sector, with a slight adjustment for domestic users. 'For this second phase, it was initially planned for July 1, but there has been a slight delay. We are now awaiting approval from the National Water Services Commission (SPAN) to proceed,' he told reporters at Wisma Dewan Negeri Selangor today. On Jan 19 last year, Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Amirudin Shari announced the new water tariff rates for over eight million consumers, effective Feb 1, 2024. The adjustment covers 2,661,743 accounts, including domestic and non-domestic users, ranging from houses of worship and small and medium enterprises (SMEs) to multinational corporations. According to Amirudin, the minimum charge for domestic users, including low-cost housing, condominiums, estates, and government quarters, will increase slightly from RM6 to RM6.50. Commenting further, Izham said the state government had submitted an application to SPAN to raise water tariffs, but the process was implemented in stages since last year due to the large number of consumers involved. He explained that the water utility company had been operating at a loss, as tariffs had not been adjusted for a long time. 'That's why we applied for a tariff increase, to ensure that Pengurusan Air Selangor Sdn Bhd (Air Selangor) can continue operating effectively. Currently, a significant amount of expenditure is required for water management,' he said. Earlier today, the Selangor government held an engagement session with SPAN to discuss water regulation issues in the state. The session, led by Amirudin and attended by Pengurusan Air Selangor Sdn Bhd (Air Selangor), was held in conjunction with the visit of SPAN chairman Datuk Abdul Kadir Mohd Din to the Menteri Besar's office. Yesterday, SPAN, in a statement, disclosed that it had received applications from water service operators in 10 states to review their respective water supply tariffs. As of June 30, applications had been received from operators in Penang, Perlis, Kedah, Kelantan, Terengganu, Pahang, Negeri Sembilan, Melaka, Johor, and Selangor. Selangor partners with MOE to build TVET graduate database
SHAH ALAM: The Selangor government is joining forces with the Education Ministry (MOE) and community colleges to establish a comprehensive database for Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) graduates. Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Amirudin Shari announced the initiative, which will be managed by the Selangor Technical Skills Development Centre (STDC). The database aims to streamline access for employers and industry players seeking skilled workers in the state. 'Selangor already has the Smart Selangor Technical and Professional Skills Initiative (IKTISASS), launched in 2019 to strengthen graduate expertise in sectors like aerospace,' he said during the state assembly session. 'Meanwhile, the federal government provides aviation engineering courses via polytechnics,' he added. Amirudin was responding to a query from Dr Mohd Zamri Mohd Zainuldin (PN-Sungai Burong) about the availability of a skills-based database for TVET graduates. The proposal for the database will be included in the upcoming state budget as part of Selangor's initiatives for next year. The state is also intensifying efforts to promote TVET as a primary choice for school leavers, despite lingering challenges in public perception. 'Many still believe that only a university education guarantees employment, causing TVET to be seen as a secondary option,' he said. 'This mindset needs to shift,' he added. 'Next year, we will collaborate with the State Education Department to introduce TVET career opportunities at the secondary school level,' he said. – Bernama
