Good governance paves way for public prosperity: U.P. CM Yogi
He said a responsible government actively steps into the lives of citizens, works alongside them, accelerates welfare initiatives, drives development—ultimately leading to prosperity for all.
Yogi was speaking at a mass wedding ceremony organised under the CM Mass Marriage Scheme in Gorakhpur where he blessed 1,200 couples who tied the knot at the event organised at the fertilizer factory ground.
The CM said he cannot attend individual weddings, but for this mass wedding ceremony, he left all the work in Lucknow and came to bless the brides. 'A daughter in a village is a daughter of us all,' he remarked, underlining the inclusive spirit of the scheme.
Addressing the gathering, he described the mass wedding scheme as a powerful strike against child marriage, polygamy and the dowry system. He credited Prime Minister Narendra Modi's leadership for transformation at the national level, mirrored in Uttar Pradesh over the past eight years.
Tuesday's mass wedding marked the first large-scale event under the newly enhanced scheme which now allocates ₹1 lakh per couple—up from the previous amount of ₹51,000. Of this, ₹60,000 is directly deposited into the bride's account, while the remaining amount is used to provide essential household items, jewellery, meals and ceremony arrangements.
'We started the scheme in 2017. At that time, we decided ₹35,000 as the amount, which was later raised to ₹51,000. Today, this amount has been raised to ₹1 lakh since April,' he said.
Describing the initiative as an extension of 'Beti Bachao, Beti Padhao' campaign, the CM emphasised its role in fighting regressive practices and empowering the marginalised, thereby contributing to the nation's overall upliftment.
Yogi also highlighted the 'Kanya Sumangala Yojana', which supports girls from birth through graduation with financial aid of up to ₹25,000. Wishing the newlyweds a prosperous future, the CM reaffirmed his government's commitment to uplifting every family and eradicating social evils like casteism, untouchability and dowry.

Yogi govt takes note of fall in Haj applications, plans to raise numbers
Concerned over the gap between the number of applications and Uttar Pradesh's allocated quota over the last few years, the Yogi Adityanath government is gearing up to increase the number of applications for Haj-2026. Haj is a key pillar of Islam and performing this pilgrimage is obligatory for adherents of the faith. (FILE PHOTO) Only 13,000 applications have been received for Haj-2026 so far though Uttar Pradesh's quota for the same is around 30,000. The last date for submission of applications has been extended by seven days till August 7. Last year, 15,000 Haj applications were received against a quota of 30,000 and 13,600 individuals went on the pilgrimage. In 2024, around 17,000 Haj applications were received from the state. The number was 26,000 in 2023. Haj is a key pillar of Islam and performing this pilgrimage is obligatory for adherents of the faith. 'The last date to apply for Haj 2026 was July 31, 2025 but we wrote a letter to the Centre, after which the last date has been extended by a week. So far, we have received around 13,000 applications but we are hopeful that this number will increase,' said Danish Azad Ansari, Uttar Pradesh's minister of state for minority welfare, Muslim Waqf and Haj. The efforts made to increase the numbers range from reaching out to clerics to running social media campaigns, according to Ansari, who is also the state Haj committee chairman. In India, the Haj quota is for 1,75,000 people, with 1,25,000 going through the Haj Committee of India and 50,000 through private tours and travels. Ansari said, 'We are working to increase the number of applications. First, we made a team of the UP State Haj Committee members go to various districts and make people aware of the importance of Haj. Our team members also met some of the Hajis who went for Haj earlier this year. They have also met key people in mosques along with religious leaders.' 'Second, we are also taking help of social and print media to create more awareness about Haj in order to increase participation. We are encouraging all those who can afford to go for Haj. Also, the rates of Haj, which were around (Rs) 3,80,000 in 2022 were reduced to (Rs) 3,37,000 in 2025 for all those who took their flights from Lucknow,' Ansari added. 'For the first time, a 'mini-Haj' of 20 days (instead of 45 days) is being introduced in India, which will be a boon for young professionals, businessmen and those who can't stay away from home for 45 days. The cost of this mini Haj is not yet finalised by the Haj Committee of India. The main benefit of this mini-Haj will be saving time even after including all the key aspects of Haj,' Ansari added. The destinations from where one can apply for mini-Haj include Ahmedabad, Bengaluru, Chennai, Kochi, Delhi, Hyderabad and Mumbai. India has been allotted a quota of 10,000 for mini-Haj. Applicants will be selected by lottery if there are more applications than the quota. In case of not being selected for mini-Haj, the applicant will be allowed to travel in the general category, but the flight destination will be decided as per mini-Haj. The option of mini-Haj cannot be changed once selected. The mini Haj- 2026 will be costlier than the normal Haj. However, the Haj Committee of India, Mumbai, has not provided information regarding the cost yet. In 2025, the Haj cost from Lucknow in the general category (40 days) was ₹3,37,350 and from Delhi, it was ₹3,27,400. Many clerics believe an increase in the Umrah culture in recent years is a potential reason for the decline in Haj applications. Umrah can be done at any time of the year, unlike Haj which has set dates. In a recent video appeal, Dr Imam Umer Amed Ilyasi of the All India Imam Organisation said, 'I would like to appeal to all Muslims that Haj is a responsibility and it is mandatory for those who are in a position to afford it. If they have finances and can do it, then they should do it and Umrah is just a form of prayer. The importance of Haj remains intact. These days people are opting for Umrah as it's less costly than Haj. One should not confuse Umrah with Haj in any way.' The people going to Haj in 2026 from Uttar Pradesh will have a dedicated round the clock helpline. Ansari said, 'We are going to form a Quick Response Team (QRT), which will monitor the situation round the clock and will provide solutions to the Hajis in case they face any issues.'

New Uttar Pradesh chief secretary is Yogi's trusted officer, has weathered diverse political climates
Known as a trusted officer of chief minister Yogi Adityanath, newly appointed Uttar Pradesh chief secretary Shashi Prakash Goyal has navigated the turbulence of political regimes of different shades in Uttar Pradesh with ease during the course of his 36-year-long career as a bureaucrat. (HT) Having led the CM's secretariat for over eight years, the 1989-batch IAS officer has been the 'eyes and ears' of the chief minister while keeping a close watch on the state bureaucracy and discharging his duties without seeking public attention. From 1996 to 2002, with the BJP in power in Uttar Pradesh for most of this period, Goyal was posted as the district magistrate of Deoria, Mathura and Etawah. The fact that he remained in the good books of political parties and leaders of different ideologies could be gauged from the fact that when the Samajwadi Party came to power in 2003, he was posted as DM of an important district like Prayagraj (then Allahabad). He also served as additional CEO, Greater NOIDA, Aligarh DM, commissioner NCR and staff officer to the UP chief secretary under the SP government. In 2007, when the Samajwadi Party lost power to the Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP), it seemed that Goyal may be shunted to an insignificant post but he maintained his clout and was posted as principal staff officer to cabinet secretary Shashank Shekhar Singh, considered the right-hand man of the then chief minister Mayawati. Remaining on the post for five years, he was a bridge between the bureaucracy and the government. In 2012, when the Samajwadi Party regained power with Akhilesh Yadav as CM, Goyal was given key assignments in the planning, irrigation, cooperative and programme Implementation departments. A senior IAS officer said SP Goyal also maintained cordial relations with the central bureaucracy. When the BJP came to power in 2014 at Centre, he went on central deputation as joint secretary in the department of higher education in the ministry of human resources development. After a three-year central deputation, he returned to Uttar Pradesh in May 2017, about two months after the BJP government came to power when CM Yogi Adityanath was looking for an officer known for hard work, dedication and honesty to handle affairs in the chief minister's office. He zeroed in on SP Goyal who was on the waitlist. On May 19, 2017, Goyal was made principal secretary to the chief minister. He was allotted key departments like civil aviation, estate, protocol as well as additional resident commissioner. During his tenure in the CM's office, Goyal was the bridge between the central and state governments, ensuring the central and state government schemes were launched successfully. He also played an important role in the organisation of the Global Investor Summit and Ground Breaking ceremonies. During his tenure in the CM office, Goyal played an important role in the transfer and posting of officers in the districts as well as in the various state government departments. Yogi Adityanath rewarded Goyal with the top post in the state bureaucracy after Manoj Kumar Singh's retirement on Thursday. Goyal is likely to continue on the post till his retirement in 2027. SP Goyal had secured All India Rank 1 in the UPSC Civil Services Examination 1989. GOYAL OUTLINES HIS PRIORITIES After taking charge, newly appointed chief secretary Shashi Prakash Goyal on Thursday said his priorities include zero tolerance toward crime and corruption and turning Uttar Pradesh into a trillion- dollar economy. Stating that chief minister Yogi Adityanath's priorities will be his priority, he said he will work for the development of the state and welfare of the masses.
