Yogi govt takes note of fall in Haj applications, plans to raise numbers
Only 13,000 applications have been received for Haj-2026 so far though Uttar Pradesh's quota for the same is around 30,000. The last date for submission of applications has been extended by seven days till August 7.
Last year, 15,000 Haj applications were received against a quota of 30,000 and 13,600 individuals went on the pilgrimage. In 2024, around 17,000 Haj applications were received from the state. The number was 26,000 in 2023.
Haj is a key pillar of Islam and performing this pilgrimage is obligatory for adherents of the faith.
'The last date to apply for Haj 2026 was July 31, 2025 but we wrote a letter to the Centre, after which the last date has been extended by a week. So far, we have received around 13,000 applications but we are hopeful that this number will increase,' said Danish Azad Ansari, Uttar Pradesh's minister of state for minority welfare, Muslim Waqf and Haj.
The efforts made to increase the numbers range from reaching out to clerics to running social media campaigns, according to Ansari, who is also the state Haj committee chairman.
In India, the Haj quota is for 1,75,000 people, with 1,25,000 going through the Haj Committee of India and 50,000 through private tours and travels.
Ansari said, 'We are working to increase the number of applications. First, we made a team of the UP State Haj Committee members go to various districts and make people aware of the importance of Haj. Our team members also met some of the Hajis who went for Haj earlier this year. They have also met key people in mosques along with religious leaders.'
'Second, we are also taking help of social and print media to create more awareness about Haj in order to increase participation. We are encouraging all those who can afford to go for Haj. Also, the rates of Haj, which were around (Rs) 3,80,000 in 2022 were reduced to (Rs) 3,37,000 in 2025 for all those who took their flights from Lucknow,' Ansari added.
'For the first time, a 'mini-Haj' of 20 days (instead of 45 days) is being introduced in India, which will be a boon for young professionals, businessmen and those who can't stay away from home for 45 days. The cost of this mini Haj is not yet finalised by the Haj Committee of India. The main benefit of this mini-Haj will be saving time even after including all the key aspects of Haj,' Ansari added.
The destinations from where one can apply for mini-Haj include Ahmedabad, Bengaluru, Chennai, Kochi, Delhi, Hyderabad and Mumbai. India has been allotted a quota of 10,000 for mini-Haj. Applicants will be selected by lottery if there are more applications than the quota.
In case of not being selected for mini-Haj, the applicant will be allowed to travel in the general category, but the flight destination will be decided as per mini-Haj. The option of mini-Haj cannot be changed once selected.
The mini Haj- 2026 will be costlier than the normal Haj. However, the Haj Committee of India, Mumbai, has not provided information regarding the cost yet.
In 2025, the Haj cost from Lucknow in the general category (40 days) was ₹3,37,350 and from Delhi, it was ₹3,27,400.
Many clerics believe an increase in the Umrah culture in recent years is a potential reason for the decline in Haj applications. Umrah can be done at any time of the year, unlike Haj which has set dates.
In a recent video appeal, Dr Imam Umer Amed Ilyasi of the All India Imam Organisation said, 'I would like to appeal to all Muslims that Haj is a responsibility and it is mandatory for those who are in a position to afford it. If they have finances and can do it, then they should do it and Umrah is just a form of prayer. The importance of Haj remains intact. These days people are opting for Umrah as it's less costly than Haj. One should not confuse Umrah with Haj in any way.'
The people going to Haj in 2026 from Uttar Pradesh will have a dedicated round the clock helpline.
Ansari said, 'We are going to form a Quick Response Team (QRT), which will monitor the situation round the clock and will provide solutions to the Hajis in case they face any issues.'

‘Son of soil' Gavai attributes his rise to Ambedkar, Constitution
1 2 Nagpur: CJI Bhushan Gavai on Saturday made an emotional return to Deekshabhoomi, not as a guest but as "a son of the soil", crediting his rise from a semi-slum school in Amravati to the nation's highest judicial office, transformative legacy of Dr Babasaheb Ambedkar and the Constitution. "If there was no Dr Ambedkar and no Constitution, I would not be in the Chief Justice's chair," he said, addressing students at the Dr Babasaheb Ambedkar College diamond jubilee celebrations at Deekshabhoomi on Saturday. Gavai said he had visited the sacred Deekshabhoomi every Dhamma Chakra Pravartan Din since childhood. "This is not a ceremonial visit. It's deeply personal. I have a lifelong emotional connect with this place," he said, standing alongside CM Devendra Fadnavis, senior judges including Shree Chandrashekhar, Nitin Sambre, Anil Kilor, Anil Pansare, Prafulla Khubalkar, Abhay Mantri, and others. Praising Ambedkar's choice of Buddhism over other religions, Gavai said, "Despite offers to embrace Islam and Christianity, Babasaheb chose Buddhism because it ensures equality for all." He cited the 1981 silver jubilee of the Buddhist movement when former Governor and his late father RS Gavai brought Dr Ambedkar's ashes to Nagpur. "I remember the massive procession in the city. My father carried the ashes on his head. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like These Are The Most Beautiful Women In The World Undo It was a defining moment," he recalled. The CJI also reflected on the Ambedkar college's early struggles when staff salaries were unpaid, and operations ran out of a temporary structure. "My father and Dadasaheb Kumbhare sought help from Manoharbhai Patel in Gondia, who agreed to support on the condition they'd have meals with him at his home one day," he said, praising such sacrifices that built the institution "brick by brick". He lauded the college's evolution into a NAAC-accredited institution. "Back then, the college struggled to get students. Today, under principal Deepa Panekar, it is thriving. It's a symbol of what grit and Ambedkarite values can achieve," he said. Highlighting women's empowerment as a true tribute to Dr Ambedkar's vision, Gavai noted that "80% of today's achievers here are girls". Among them was his own daughter Karishma, who bagged 15 gold medals in LLB and seven medals in LLM, presented by CM Fadnavis during the event. "Ambedkar always said the progress of a society is reflected by the progress of its women. This campus is proving that," he added. Gavai also praised young changemakers like Nikhil, a student who worked with malnourished tribal children in Melghat. "Even after I could no longer work there, doctors like Abhay Bang, Ashish Satav, and Madhukar Kolhe selflessly continued their mission. They could have earned lakhs in cities but chose to serve the poor," he said, calling them "real leaders". He urged students to rise in their careers but never forget their roots. "Dr Ambedkar said there's a difference between a great person and an eminent one — the latter serves society. Always remember your responsibility, no matter how high you rise," he advised. Recounting his student days, the CJI also revealed his contribution to the popular Bhim Geet composed by poet Suresh Bhat. "I helped Bhat Saheb with lyrics when he was in Mumbai and was moved to tears while reciting it. That journey — from the narrow lanes of Amravati to the Supreme Court — is thanks to Babasaheb's ideology of socio-economic equality, justice, and the Indian Constitution," he concluded. The event was attended by Maharashtra social justice minister Sanjay Shirsat, Bhadant Nagarjun Arya Surai Sasai of Deekshabhoomi Smarak Samiti, former Nagpur University registrar Puran Meshram, and others. Punjab vigilance raids realtor hours after he joins BJP; political vendetta, says leader
The Punjab Vigilance Bureau (VB) Saturday conducted searches at three premises linked to real estate developer and former Akali leader Ranjit Singh Gill in Chandigarh's Sector 2, barely 12 hours after he was inducted into the BJP by Haryana CM Nayab Singh Saini. Gill and and the BJP strongly condemned the action, accusing the AAP government of indulging in 'political vendetta'. The Vigilance Bureau, however, claimed to have uncovered details of suspicious financial transactions running into crores between Gillco Developers — the Mohali-based realty firm founded by Gill — and entities linked with Shiromani Akali Dal leader Bikram Singh Majithia who is currently in jail after being arrested in a disproportionate assets case. Gill was the 'halka in-charge' of Kharar for the Akali Dal till he quit the party in July. He was widely tipped to join AAP, especially after ruling party's Kharar MLA, Anmol Gagan Maan, announced her resignation and decision to quit politics on July 19. However, she took back her resignation the very next day. A senior vigilance official said that the searches at Gill's residence was in furtherance of the investigations into an FIR (No. 22, dated June 25) registered at Punjab Vigilance Bureau (VB) Police Station Flying Squad, SAS Nagar, against Majithia. The official added that searches were carried out three premises linked to Gillco Developers in Punjab and Chandigarh. 'During the searches, the Bureau uncovered details of suspicious financial transactions running into crores between Gillco Developers and entities linked with Majithia. Further investigations are ongoing,' the official said. Majithia was held on June 25. According to the FIR registered by the Vigilance Bureau, its preliminary investigation has revealed that more than Rs 540 crore worth of 'drug money' was laundered in several ways and Majithia had allegedly facilitated it. The official added that after registration of FIR against Majithia, certain suspicious financial links and transactions between Gillco Developers and some of the entities had come to notice. 'These were developed in a meticulous manner by conducting investigations. To conduct further in-depth inquiries into these transactions and to gather relevant evidence, the Vigilance Bureau conducted these searches in accordance with procedure established by law,' the official said. Bureau officials said several incriminating documents, electronic devices and other evidences have been seized in the ongoing searches. An official spokesperson said that the search operations were conducted strictly in accordance with the legal procedures and the search was still underway. 'Electronic devices and relevant documents were also seized during the searches', he added.
