All-Star Games may be flawed but still a boon for professional sports leagues
Several factors, including a lack of competitive furor and athletes' ability to use social media to engage with fans from around the globe, have left many to wonder whether the standard All-Star Game model is broken.
"All-Star Games used to be an opportunity for players to build their brand," said Bob Dorfman, a sports marketing analyst in San Francisco.
"Now there are so many other ways to do that, that it became less important for players to have to show up in these games and play well."
Just this past week Argentine great Lionel Messi, who is Major League Soccer's reigning MVP, decided not to participate in the MLS All-Star Game held in Austin, Texas, on Wednesday despite not being injured. Messi was handed a one-game suspension for skipping the game, a punishment that Inter Miami owner Jorge Mas said his star was "extremely upset" about.
North America's top four sports leagues have for years been tinkering with the formats for their All-Star showcases in hopes of creating more competitiveness and additional interest in an exhibition game.
The NHL ditched its All-Star Game this year in favor of an international tournament called 4 Nations Face-Off that proved to be a success in many metrics, including attendance, television ratings and, perhaps most importantly, player buy-in.
Even NBA Commissioner Adam Silver referenced the NHL's model when discussing future changes to his league's showcase after admitting the new format for February's NBA All-Star Game, which featured a mini-tournament of four teams, was "a miss."
The NFL's all-star showcase was often missing many top players who were either injured, uninterested or Super Bowl-bound and so in 2022 they replaced it with Pro Bowl Games, which features skills events and a flag football game.
The MLB All-Star Game earlier this month, which for the first time was decided by a home-run swing-off, averaged 7.19 million viewers on Fox, down 3.5% from last year and the second-lowest rating for the Midsummer Classic.
Still, MLB's showcase drew far better than its counterparts, with the NBA All-Star Game and the NFL's Pro Bowl Games each averaging 4.7 million viewers in February.
"There was a time when every All-Star Game was a can't-miss event and people were excited and thrilled," said famed U.S. sports agent Leigh Steinberg, best known as the inspiration for Tom Cruise's character in the film "Jerry Maguire."
But despite the idea that All-Star Games and related events are experiencing a decline in popularity, they still provide leagues with an opportunity for massive brand activation, which experts say is where the real value lies.
The lead-up to an All-Star Game offers leagues a chance to connect with the city they are in that week through initiatives like community events, upgrading sport facilities, equipment donations, school visits and fan festivals.
"When you look at it just as one game on one day, that's not really what the value is," said Joe Favorito, a long-time sports marketing professional and professor at Columbia University.
"The value is everything that leads up to it and everything else that is tied into what the culmination of the game is. The reality is the actual game is probably the least important part of what an All-Star activation is these days."

Lakers' Luka Doncic shows off summer shred in Men's Health
After plenty of attention was brought to Luka Doncic's fitness level following his shocking February trade to the Los Angeles Lakers, the five-time All-Star has been putting another surprise together this offseason. After reports of an improved physique surfaced earlier this summer, a profile in Men's Health magazine confirmed the extent to which Doncic has gone to develop a slimmed-down look as he prepares for his first full season in L.A. Doncic, 26, has generally been listed at 6-foot-6 and 230 pounds, although opinions on the weight have varied. It did not prohibit him from scoring 28.2 points with 8.2 rebounds and 7.7 assists last season. But reports indicated this past winter that the Dallas Mavericks had become exasperated with Doncic's lack of fitness, which might have contributed to a calf injury that the star guard had been rehabbing for a month prior to the trade that shocked the NBA. Ankle, calf, knee and back injuries have slowed Doncic at certain times in his career, although he still managed to play at least 61 games in a season until he was reduced to 50 last year with the Mavericks and Lakers combined. Now, Doncic is visibly slimmer after an improved diet combined with a fitness program. He has been avoiding gluten and keeping sugar to a minimum, while loading up on protein to help him get through multiple workouts a day that include lifting weights along with on-court drills. "Obviously, be the best that I can be, take care of myself," Doncic said to Men's Health. "This year, with my team, I think we did a huge step. But this is just the start, you know. I need to keep going. Can't stop." While LeBron James exercised a contract option to return to the Lakers in 2025-26, the team also added center Deandre Ayton, guard Marcus Smart and forward Jake LaRavia. The profile did not mention Doncic's current weight, but photographs showed off his slim look with greater muscle definition in his arms. His workouts kept him away from basketball at first, then had him return to the court in June. He will play for Slovenia in EuroBasket in August. "So every summer I try my best to work on different things," he said. "Obviously, I'm very competitive. This summer was just a little bit different, you know. It kind of motivated me to be even better."

Legendary Cubs second baseman Ryne Sandberg dies at 65
Baseball Hall of Famer Ryne Sandberg, a longtime Chicago Cubs star who was one of the game's greatest-ever second basemen, died on Monday at age 65. Sandberg battled prostate cancer for more than a year. The Cubs posted "With great sadness, we share that Ryne Sandberg has passed away today." on X. After getting six at-bats for the Philadelphia Phillies in 1981, Sandberg was traded to the Cubs and became a fixture in Chicago for 15 seasons. The 10-time All-Star was an all-around performer, as proven by his nine Gold Gloves and seven Silver Slugger awards. MLB Commissioner Rob Manfred said in a statement "Ryne Sandberg was a legend of the Chicago Cubs franchise and a beloved figure throughout Major League Baseball. He was a five-tool player who excelled in every facet of the game thanks to his power, speed and work ethic. "Ryne remained active in the game he loved as an ambassador for the Cubs, a manager for the Phillies and in the Minor Leagues, and a frequent participant at the Hall of Fame. His many friends across the game were in his corner as he courageously fought cancer in recent years. We will continue to support the important work of Stand Up To Cancer in Ryne's memory." Jane Forbes Clark, chairman of the National Baseball Hall of Fame and Museum, added in a statement "Ryne Sandberg had a relentless work ethic and an unshakable positive outlook. With it, he inspired all those who knew him. He always emphasized his respect for the way the game should be played, for his teammates and for the Hall of Fame, especially during his 2005 induction speech." Sandberg, affectionately called "Ryno," was selected the National League's Most Valuable Player in 1984, when he hit .314 with league-high totals of 114 runs and 19 triples to go with 19 homers and 84 RBIs. He topped the NL with 40 homers in 1990. After the Cubs lost 8-4 to the host Milwaukee Brewers on Monday, Chicago manager Craig Counsell said "I just addressed the team and told them the news of Ryno's passing. We're saddened of the loss of a great man. "We were lucky as a group this year to have Ryno in spring training and it was an honor to be around a man battling for his life but wanted to come to the baseball park and spend his day with us. I know it meant a lot to everybody in there. We're grateful that he was willing to spend his time with us when things weren't going great for him." "So, it's a sad day for the Chicago Cubs and he was a great Cub." In 2,164 career games, Sandberg hit .285 with a .344 on-base percentage, a .452 slugging percentage, 282 home runs, 1,061 RBIs and 344 stolen bases. He was inducted into the Hall of Fame in 2005, and a statue of Sandberg was unveiled outside Wrigley Field last year. Longtime Cubs teammate Mark Grace said "When you examine the offense and defense, you'll find some years where he was the best player you've ever seen in your life." The Cubs got to the playoffs just twice in his career, losing in the NL Championship Series in 1984 and 1989. Sandberg logged a career .385 average (15-for-39) with a home run, six RBIs, six walks and three steals in 10 postseason games. He went on to manage the Phillies from August 2013 to June 2015, compiling a 119-159 record.

Bouchard extends career with first-round win at Canadian Open
Hometown hero Eugenie Bouchard beat Emiliana Arango 6-4, 2-6, 6-2 in the first round of the Canadian Open in Montreal on Monday, a win that delayed the former world number five's retirement. Bouchard announced earlier this month she would walk away from the sport after the tournament but added a condition to that plan in the wake of her thrilling victory in front of a packed crowd. "If I win this tournament, I will not retire," she said in an on-court interview. Playing in only her second singles match of the year, Bouchard blasted a forehand winner to take the first set but Colombian Arango turned the tables in the second set amid a cascade of unforced errors from her opponent. However, Bouchard broke for a 3-1 lead in the decider and hammered a swinging volley to extend the advantage to 4-1. The 31-year-old wildcard put her hands on her head and then her heart after securing the victory to set up a second-round meeting with 17th seed Belinda Bencic of Switzerland. Briton Emma Raducanu beat her good friend Elena-Gabriela Ruse of Romania 6-2, 6-4 and will next meet 32nd seed Peyton Stearns. "It's very difficult to play someone who you are close to," Raducanu said. "I'm really glad about how I was able to put that to one side for the match and back up a good week in DC." Four-time Grand Slam winner Naomi Osaka of Japan beat Canadian qualifier Ariana Arseneault 6-4, 6-2 in breezy conditions to set up a second-round meeting with 13th seed Liudmila Samsonova of Russia. In the men's tournament, which is being playing in Toronto, Australian Adam Walton roared back from a set down to defeat Frenchman Benjamin Bonzi 4-6, 6-0, 6-3 and set up a second-round meeting with top seed Alexander Zverev of Germany. Spaniard Pablo Carreno Busta, the tournament's 2022 champion, came from behind to defeat Liam Draxl 2-6 6-4 6-4. Several top players withdrew ahead of the Masters and WTA 1000 tournament including world number ones Aryna Sabalenka and Jannik Sinner, Carlos Alcaraz, Novak Djokovic and Jack Draper.
